Rains, fog blamed for 10-vehicle pileup

KOTA BELUD: Continuous rains and heavy fogs have caused 10 vehicles to collide with one another in a road accident along Km 26 Ranau/Tamparuli Road, near Kampung Kiau, here yesterday afternoon.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Abdullah confirmed the incident and said no casualty had however been reported in the 12.45pm incident.

He said police investigation revealed that 10 vehicles were involved in the incident – a six-ton lorry, two Hilux Vigo vehicles, an Isuzu D-Max four-wheel-drive, a Perodua Alza car, a Perodua Viva car, a Nissan Sentra vehicle, another four-wheel-drive vehicle, a Mitsubishi Triton, and another vehicle.

He said 19 people, in their 20s and 50s from their respective vehicles sustained injuries, some minor, and were taken to the district hospital for outpatient treatment.

According to Mohd Zaidi, initial police investigation believed the accident happened when the driver of the six-ton lorry that was heading to Kota Kinabalu from Ranau, lost control of the vehicle and knocked the Mitsubishi Triton, the Isuzu D-Max and both the Hilux Vigo vehicles that were on the opposite lane.

The incident also saw five other vehicles, the Perodua Viva, Hilux four-wheel drive, Nissan Sentra, Perodua Alza and another vehicle collide with one another when the drivers of the respective vehicles tried to avoid the initial accident.

Mohd Zaidi said police were still carrying out investigation and urged eyewitness to come forward to assist in their investigation.

The incident also caused a traffic jam from both road directions.

The case will be investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
