Kerajaan rugi RM2.5 juta sebulan akibat penyeludupan minyak

Kerajaan rugi RM2.5 juta sebulan akibat penyeludupan minyak

-- BERNAMA

Koo-Tan playing for China

The world's riches badminton tournament, the Indian Badminton League (IBL) has begun, and Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are now representing China.

The USD1 million league did not get off to a good start, with organisation issues and delays to the opening ceremony taking the shine off the event.

In addition, the guide book provided to the media listed Kien Keat and Boon Heong as players from China instead of Malaysia. Guess Kien Keat's wish to play for China after the BWF World Championships failure came true, sort of.

Taiwan's Tai Tzu Ying was also listed as a player from China.

The problems does not stop there, as volunteers are not briefed on what to do, and the media were left stranded without proper arrangements to allocate an area for them to work with.

Six teams will compete in the inaugral IBL, with Krrish Delhi Smashers and Pune Pistons locking horns on the first day.

Delhi’s coach, Rashid Sidek has three Malaysian players at his disposal - Liew Daren, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat, while another Malaysian, Tan Wee Kiong is playing for Pune Pistons.

Delhi won two games, namely the men's doubles, Tan Boon Hoeng and Koo Kien Keat gave their team a 2-1 lead by beating Pune's Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas 21-13, 21-16 and Sai Praneeth gave Delhi a winning start in the opening tie of men's singles against Pune's Tien Minh Nyugen, beating 21-16, 21-20.

Pune Piston won three games making them the winner in the first fixture, women's singles' Juliane Schenk beat Nichaon Jindapon 21-15, 21-6, Saurabh Verma thumped Delhi’s H.S. Prannoy in the men's singles and mixed doubles pair Joachiam Fischer Nielsen-Ashwini Ponappa smashed out Koo Kien Kiat-Jwala Gutta 21-19, 16-21 and 11-3.

Today, Hyderabad Hotshots would play against Awadhe Warriors, while Bangs Beats versus Mumbai Masters.

It is still unknown if Lee Chong Wei, who was bought by Mumbai Masters would be playing tomorrow after his injury in Guangzhou, China.

Indian media reported that Chong Wei was supposed to arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday for the IBL opening ceremony but his travel schedule was delayed.

"Lee Chong Wei is supposed to come on Thursday. Whether he will play in the tournament or not, we do not know," Indo-Asian News Service quoted Mumbai Masters co-owner V. Chamundeshwarnath as saying.

Pengakuan tukang sembelih komunis

Anwar Congo

"Inilah sejarah. Inilah kita," katanya.

Bekas mufti Perlis - Boleh berkongsi tempat beribadat

Bekas mufti Perlis - Boleh berkongsi tempat beribadat

Sci-fi thriller 'Elysium' tops US box-office

Sci-fi thriller 'Elysium' tops US box-office

LOS ANGELES:  Science-fiction thriller "Elysium" took top spot in the North American box-office this weekend, beating out competition from raunchy Jennifer Aniston comedy "We're The Millers," estimates showed Sunday.

Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, "Elysium" is set in a dystopian future where the poor have been left to inhabit a ruined Earth while the rich live on a luxurious space station.

The movie, written and directed by South African filmmaker Neil Blomkamp ("District 9"), earned $30.5 million in its opening three days, estimated figures from box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations showed.

In second place was Aniston's R-rated comedy "We're The Millers," which stars the former "Friends" actress and Jason Sudeikis in a romp about a bogus family attempting to smuggle drugs into the United States from Mexico.

The film took $26.6 million over the three-day weekend, placing it just ahead of Disney's latest animated offering "Planes."

An effective spin-off of the hugely successful "Cars" franchise, "Planes" took $22.5 million to place third.

Fourth place was occupied by another debutant, "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters", the latest adaptation based on the book series by Rick Riordan about a schoolboy who is in fact the son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. The film took $14.6 million.

Last week's number one, the Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg action comedy "2 Guns" earned $11.1 million this weekend.

Sony's animated sequel "The Smurfs 2" was in sixth spot with $9.5 million, just ahead of Hugh Jackman's comic-book based blockbuster "The Wolverine. The latest big-screen adaptation to feature the claw-fingered "X-Men" character added another $8 million in its third week on release.

In eighth place was horror film "The Conjuring", the low-budget shocker which took $6.7 million. So far the movie has earned $120.7 million in four weeks, a phenomenal return for a film which cost a relatively modest $20 million to make.

Animated children's comedy "Despicable Me 2" was ninth with $7.4 million, as another sequel "Grown Ups 2" took 10th.

Rounding out the top 12 were Woody Allen's acclaimed drama "Blue Jasmine", with $2.5 million and animated children's flick "Turbo" with $2.3 million. - AFP RELAXNEWS

Facebook boosts connections, not happiness: study

Facebook boosts connections, not happiness: study

People who use Facebook may feel more connected, but less happy.

A study of young adults released Wednesday concluded that the more people used Facebook, the worse they subsequently felt.

"On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection," said University of Michigan social psychologist Ethan Kross, lead author of the study.

"But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result -- it undermines it."

The researchers recruited 82 young adults who had smartphones and Facebook accounts and assessed their subjective well-being by texting them at random times five times a day for two weeks.

The researchers said the study, published in the scientific journal PLOS, was believed to be the first measuring Facebook's impact on happiness and life satisfaction.

"This is a result of critical importance because it goes to the very heart of the influence that social networks may have on people's lives," said University of Michigan cognitive neuroscientist John Jonides, another author of the paper.

The researchers monitored the study group by asking them how they felt, whether they were worried or lonely, how much they used Facebook and how much they interacted "directly" with people.

"The more people used Facebook at one time point, the worse they felt the next time we text-messaged them," the researchers wrote. "The more they used Facebook over two weeks, the more their life satisfaction levels declined over time."

In contrast, personal interactions led people to feel better over time, they noted.

The scientists also found no evidence that Facebook use was merely a symptom of feeling low. People were not more likely to use Facebook when they felt bad, although they did use the social network more frequently when they were lonely.

"It was not the case that Facebook use served as a proxy for feeling bad or lonely," Kross said.

Yet the researchers stopped short of claiming the same effect for all Facebook users or other social networks.

"We concentrated on young adults in this study because they represent a core Facebook user demographic," the study said.

"However, examining whether these findings generalize to additional age groups is important. Future research should also examine whether these findings generalize to other online social networks."

The study comes a week after British researchers published a report concluding that frequent photo posting on Facebook can damage real-life relationships.

The discussion paper led by David Houghton of the University of Birmingham said Facebook photo postings, especially of oneself, are not always welcomed by less intimate friends.

"People, other than very close friends and relatives, don't seem to relate well to those who constantly share photos of themselves," Houghton said.

The researchers pointed out that while Facebook creates a homogenous group of "friends," most users have different types of relationships with those viewing their postings.

"It's worth remembering that the information we post to our 'friends' on Facebook actually gets viewed by lots of different categories of people: partners; friends; family; colleagues and acquaintances; and each group seems to take a different view of the information shared," the researcher said.

Moyes, Mourinho, Pellegrini brace for impact

Football: Moyes, Mourinho, Pellegrini brace for impact

LONDON:  The approaching Premier League season will be defined to a large extent by the ability of the new managers at England's three leading clubs to tackle the challenges awaiting them.

Last season's top three sides are all under new management, with David Moyes succeeding Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Manuel Pellegrini taking over from the sacked Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, and Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea.

Amid the attendant flux, there are expectations that a new order could emerge in the English top flight, but Moyes' task is to ensure that United's 20-year dominance persists.

The 50-year-old Scot appears to face the most daunting task of the three new men.

Although he inherited a squad that finished the last campaign as convincing champions, he has no experience of competing at the very top of the table and will find Ferguson's shadow wherever he turns.

Ferguson led United to 38 titles during his 26-year tenure, turning the club into one of the biggest names in global sport, and fans will be quick to pine for his return if Moyes fails to successfully negotiate an awkward opening run of fixtures that includes meetings with Chelsea, City and Liverpool.

Moyes' first pre-season at United has been far from ideal, amid continued speculation over the future of unsettled striker Wayne Rooney, who the manager insists is not for sale despite lingering interest from Chelsea.

United's supporters have also become restless about the club's lack of activity in the transfer market.

The champions have seen moves for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Everton left-back Leighton Baines rebuffed, but after Sunday's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield, Moyes said he was happy with his squad.

"We're getting closer to signings. We're moving forward, but the deadline is getting closer as well," he said. "Hopefully we are. If we don't (sign anyone), I'm happy to go with what we've got."

Unlike Moyes, Mourinho knows what it takes to win the Premier League, having led Chelsea to successive title triumphs in 2005 and 2006.

In returning to Chelsea from Real Madrid, he has ignored the old football truism that says one must never revisit the scene of former glories, but this time he is determined to lay down a lasting legacy.

The 50-year-old Portuguese returns to find a squad now geared towards patient possession football, rather than the counter-attacking style he introduced during his first stint at Stamford Bridge.

He will have a dizzying array of attacking midfielders to select from, with new signing Andre Schuerrle and returning loanee Kevin De Bruyne expected to compete with Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar and Victor Moses for the three advanced midfield positions in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

"Chelsea did very well to get these young boys with great potential, great ability and a great future, and I look forward to trying to improve them," Mourinho said in June.

Up front, he must either seek to pursue the rehabilitation of Fernando Torres or place his trust in 20-year-old Romelu Lukaku, who scored 17 goals during an impressive loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season and has a profile similar to Didier Drogba, the indomitable spearhead of Mourinho's first Chelsea side.

Pellegrini, the former Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga coach, has never worked in England before, but the early conclusion of City's transfer business has given him ample time to get to know his squad.

The urbane 59-year-old Chilean has £90 million ($139 million, 105 million euros) of new talent at his disposal in the shape of Spain pair Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo, Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho and Montenegrin forward Stevan Jovetic, all of whom had arrived by late July.

"I think we have the best squad in England," Pellegrini said last week. "We bought four important players, we already had a very good team and with these four players I think we improved a lot."

Pellegrini must harness the quartet's talents to sharpen an attack that mustered a relatively meagre haul of 66 goals last season, which was only the fifth-highest tally in the league.

The 2012 champions boasted the meanest defence, but they have looked porous in pre-season and an injury to Serbian centre-back Matija Nastasic may oblige the club to enter the transfer market again.

Wax Museum eyes 30,000 visitors a month

SHAH ALAM:  Red Carpet@i-City, the latest attraction at i-City in Section 7 here, aims to attract 30,000 visitors a month after the official launch on Thursday, said I-Berhad Director, Monica Ong.

She said the company was confident of achieving the target, as i-City currently attracted 90,000 visitors weekly.

"We are confident about our target. We are running a lot of promotional activities in our quest to make our latest attraction an ideal entertainment centre for the whole family," she told reporters after a preview of the Red Carpet@i-City here today.

The Red Carpet, costing RM25 million, is Malaysia's first all-star interactive wax museum. It is also the first of its kind in the region as the exhibits possess both voice and motion capabilities.

The museum will feature 100 wax figures of famous people from history and contemporary personalities of today.

She said the wax figures will be showcased in a 3,000 sq ft Oscar-like awards setting and will be separated into six themes -- World Icons, Celebrities, Sport Stars, World Book of Records, All Stars Cafe and Interactive.

Ong said the museum will be another Malaysian-owned international product and attraction for Visit Malaysia 2014 for both international and local visitors.

"The unveiling of Red Carpet is timely in that Visit Malaysia 2014 is around the corner," she said.

In conjunction with the opening, Red Carpet@i-City will be offering a special package tickets for two adults and two children at RM180, she said.

Ong said the normal ticket prices were RM100 for an adult and RM50 for a child. - BERNAMA
