James Bond sub car sells for RM2.8 million (£550,000)

James Bond sub car sells for RM2.8 million

The iconic submarine car driven by James Bond in the 1977 classic The Spy Who Loved Me fetched RM2.8 million when it was floated at auction for the first time in London on Monday.

Following an intense bidding battle, The Lotus Esprit was finally sold to a telephone bidder at RM Auctions in Battersea, south London.

The car was made for the scene in which Bond, played by Roger Moore, evades the gunfire from an overhead helicopter by plunging into the water, accompanied by a nervous Barbara Bach in the passenger seat.

"We are very happy with that price, it is very strong money for what is an important piece of movie memorabilia," said Peter Haynes of RM Auctions Europe.

"Bearing in mind it is not a car that can be driven on the road, the price just goes to prove the draw that all Bond-related memorabilia has," he added. - AFP

Hong Kong's CSL demos 300Mbps LTE Advanced service, due early 2014

Phil Mottram, CEO of CSL.

It was only about four months ago when CSL, Telstra's part-owned operator behind Hong Kong's one2Free and 1010 networks, showed off its 150Mbps LTE Cat 4 upgrade; but why stop there?

Today, the same company gave us a glimpse of its upcoming 300Mbps LTE Advanced service, which is enabled by aggregating its 20MHz carriers at both its 1,800MHz and 2,600MHz LTE bands.

"The announcements in Korea and the announcements in Australia around LTE Advanced... the theoretical speed that they're delivering is 150Mbps. What we're talking about today is LTE-A300," said Phil Mottram, CEO of CSL.

"It's definitely a first for Hong Kong, and it's potentially a world-first in terms of being able to deliver these theoretical, maximum download speeds at 300Mbps."

CSL's LTE-A300 device emulator.
Photo: Since no current devices are equipped with LTE Cat 6 radio, CSL and ZTE used a large device emulator -- with four thick antennas for LTE Cat 6's MIMO 2x2 implementation -- to perform the speedy demo at a small cell site.

Indeed, we witnessed a local download speed reaching just below 300Mbps, while a more realistic FTP download worked out to be about 172Mbps fast, which is still above CSL's current maximum speed. We didn't get to see an upload speed demo, but according to CSL's presentation, it's capped at a comparatively tame 50Mbps.

For those interested, the reason why LTE Cat 5 (which can also do 300Mbps download) is skipped by CSL plus many other companies is because it uses MIMO 4x4, which makes stuffing all these antennas on mobile devices extremely difficult.

CSL won't be offering its 300Mbps service until early 2014, and even then, the operator will only have 4G dongles and USB modems to begin with.

CTO Christian Daigneault said one of the main reasons is that he's waiting for better battery and power management technologies, as CSL's 20+20 carrier aggregation requires more power. In comparison, Korea's current 10+10 implementation (but is still LTE Advanced) is less demanding.

If all goes well, CSL will eventually stock LTE Cat 6-capable smartphones by mid-2014, with Samsung, ZTE and Huawei namechecked as potential device partners.

TomTom inks new in-car navigation deals with Ford, Renault and Sony

DNP TomTom inks new incar navigation deals with Ford, Renault and Sony

With Apple, Google, and Nokia all vying for a share of the in-car navigation market, TomTom's hooked up with a team of automotive partners to keep its long-term aspirations alive.

The first of the navigation firm's three new deals will see it provide maps, navigation and traffic updates for Renault's new built-in R-Link touchscreen tablet, which will feature in no fewer than 15 of the company's new models.

TomTom is establishing a new partnership with Ford with the debut of a new app for the in-dash SYNC infotainment system, although you won't see it until sometime next year. The GPS provider will also include its mapping features in Sony's newest AV Center in-dash system, which features a high-res 6.1-inch display.

As TomTom gradually gets pulled in two -- between deals with Apple and its ever-expanding list of car manufacturing partners -- maybe the portable dashboard GPS will soon find itself at a dead end.

Miss World organisers say Bali final 'impossible'

Miss World organisers say Bali final 'impossible'

Miss World organisers said Tuesday it would be "impossible" to stage the final in Bali, vowing to petition Indonesian authorities to move the event back to Java after it was switched in the face of radical Muslim protests.

As hundreds more demonstrators took to the streets demanding the contest be scrapped, organisers said they hoped to persuade officials this week to reverse their decision to shift the whole show to the Hindu-majority resort island.

"I think people can appreciate how complex it would be to move everything to Bali," Nana Putra, executive director of organiser and broadcaster MNC Group, told AFP.

"Just getting the venue and all the accommodation is impossible with APEC here," she said, referring to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit at the start of October. The final takes place on September 28.

World leaders and thousands of officials and journalists will attend APEC, with many arriving days before it starts to take part in pre-summit meetings and activities.

Putra said organisers hoped to meet authorities some time this week, but did not say when.

However, she insisted organisers had no plans to cancel later rounds or the final and said they had a back-up venue in Indonesia if it was needed, although declined to give further details.

Government officials said Saturday the entire three-week contest would be held on Bali, where it opened Sunday after days of protests by radicals, who denounced the pageant as "pornographic" and "smut".

Some of the later rounds were originally due to take place in and around the capital Jakarta, including the final which was to be staged in a massive convention centre near the city in West Java province.

Putra also revealed that organisers had not been notified before the government decided to move the event.

"We were not part of the discussion -- we only heard about the decision after it was made, unfortunately," she said.

Hardliners kept the pressure up Tuesday, with some 700 members of hardline group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia protesting outside the West Java governor's office in Bandung city.

"We don't want Miss World here in West Java. But moving the contest is not enough -- it has no place in Indonesia," Asep Sudrajat, a Muslim cleric from the group, told AFP at the protest.

The decision to move the final round is the latest victory for Islamic fringe groups who are wielding increasing power and have succeeded in getting events they deem un-Islamic changed or cancelled in recent years.

All 4 Delhi gang rape suspects found guilty of rape, murder

All 4 Delhi gang rape suspects found guilty of rape, murder

The four men accused of gang-raping a student on a bus in New Delhi have been found guilty of rape and murder.

Judge Yogesh Khanna announced: "I convict all of the accused. They have been found guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence.. and for committing the murder of the helpless victim."

The anticipation towards the verdict reached fever-pitch and the verdict itself spread like wildfire in the social media like twitter and Facebook.

Reporters from numerous medias deployed on location have been diligently updating the public with information on the case since early today.

Earlier, while wating for the verdict to be delivered, the parents of the popular physiotherapy student have been at the forefront of calls for the men to be hanged over the December 16 attack in New Delhi, which led to a wave of soul-searching and a new anti-rape law.

Their 23-year-old daughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died of her injuries on December 29 in a Singapore hospital.

The four men, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, have all pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include murder, gang rape and theft.

A juvenile has already been sentenced to three years in a correctional facility, while a fifth adult defendant, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanging in his prison cell in March while awaiting trial.

The seven-month trial has been held in a special fast-track court in south Delhi, with more than 100 witnesses called to give evidence, including 85 for the prosecution.

During the trial, the prosecution produced DNA evidence, the victim's dying testimony and statements from a male companion who was beaten up during the attack.

The victim and her companion had spent the evening watching a movie at a mall in south Delhi when they were picked up by one of the many private buses plying the streets.

But rather than take them home, the group are alleged to have subjected the pair to a horrifying 45-minute ordeal that ended with both of them thrown out of the bus, virtually unconscious and naked.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal wins US Open 2013

Tennis: Rafael Nadal wins US Open title

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams each took home a record $3.6 million in prize money for winning US Open titles, but both champions lamented that much of their prize was going to be taken in taxes.

Spanish second seed Nadal defeated Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to capture the men's crown on Monday, a day after Williams outlasted second-ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1.

Both US star Williams and Nadal captured the top prize of $2.6 million for winning the year's final Grand Slam title on the New York hardcourts plus a $1 million bonus for having the most successful run in pre-US Open tournaments.

"The prize money is great for the sport," Nadal said. "The sport is bigger and bigger. Is a lot of money, is true. The only thing that we can say is thanks to the US Open for that improvement on our sport."

The US Tennis Association increased the prize money to record levels this year and the victory boosted 13-time Grand Slam champion Nadal's career total above $60 million, but it also means more money out of the champion's pockets in taxes.

"At the end, it's a lot of money anyway, but that's not the real prize money," Nadal said. "You have to pay the tax, and in Spain today it is 56 (percent), I think.

"Anyway, a lot of money. Is more than half. Is more than half less and then is Euros."

That conversion factor will shrink the Euro figure for Nadal even more, which at least is not a factor for Williams, who surpassed $9 million for the season, a women's prize money record, and $50 million for her career.

Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam winner and five-time US Open champion, faces a hefty bite from "Uncle Sam", the mythical US representation of the government often used in reference for taking taxes from paychecks.

"Someone told me today I passed 50 (million), but half of that goes to my Uncle Sam. I love him. I'm always giving him half my money."

Williams, however, said she has never personally taken home a check from an event.

"I never in my life have picked up a check," she said. "I don't play tennis for the money. I love Grand Slams.

"I think my dad got me into tennis because of the money, but me being naive and silly, I never thought about it." --AFP
