Mengenang Tunku: 'Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku' bawa makna besar buat Tok

Malfunction forces AirAsia X to abort flight, turn back: CEO

TONY FERNANDES: He cited the incident as a 'minor issue' and 'nothing out of normal.

KUALA LUMPUR: The pilots of an AirAsia X flight D7172 from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah on Sunday aborted the flight and circled for hours to burn off fuel before landing safely in Malaysia, the AirAsia Group's boss said.

"One auto-thrust not functioning properly. Actually okay to fly but we just returning it to base," Tony Fernandes told AFP in a text message, calling it a "minor issue."

He confirmed the plane landed safely at Kuala Lumpur's international airport late Sunday afternoon. Auto-thrusters are systems that are used to ensure a plane continues to travel at a steady speed.

Fernandes confirmed the plane -- operated by the long-haul arm of the AirAsia Group of carriers, AirAsia X -- landed safely at Kuala Lumpur's international airport late on Sunday afternoon.

Auto-thrusters are systems that are used to ensure a plane continues to travel at a steady speed.

Flight-tracking websites indicated AirAsia X Flight D7172 flew several wide circles over the Strait of Malacca to burn off fuel.

Fernandes called the manoeuvre a "routine" precaution as the plane was heavily laden with fuel that normally would have been used up during the several-hour flight to the Saudi Arabian city.

"Just burning off fuel as has lots of fuel as was going to Jeddah," he said.

AirAsia later said the passengers were put on another plane which was to depart in the evening.

"As a safety precaution, and in full compliance with all international security and safety standards, the aircraft made a turn back and safely landed at ... 1740 hours (0940 GMT)," it said in a statement.

Although QZ8501 was the AirAsia group's first deadly accident, it followed two deadly Malaysia Airlines incidents last year that killed over 500 people and raised concerns among many travellers about the safety of the country's carriers.

"What is happening with Malaysia and airplanes? This is really, really scary," posted one Twitter user.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai in a Tweet post confirmed that the flight has safely landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 in Sepang after circling for several hours over the Straits of Melaka, Sunday afternoon.

On Dec 28, AirAsia Flight QZ8501 went down in stormy weather in the Java Sea.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared last March after inexplicably diverting from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing course. The airliner, carrying 239 people, is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean, but no trace has been found.

Semua pihak perlu bertenang, kata Ismail Sabri

  • Ismail Sabri Yaakob

SHAH ALAM – Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob menyeru semua pihak supaya menghentikan polemik isu boikot peniaga.

LOS ANGELES: Olympian Bruce Jenner was involved in a car crash Saturday in which he appeared unscathed while one woman was killed and several more people were hurt, TMZ reported.

The deadly accident took place on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Los Angeles metro area, while Jenner was being chased by paparazzi, according to the gossip news website.

TMZ, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, said that three vehicles were involved in the crash.

It added that eight people were injured.

Jenner, pictured at the scene standing upright with no obvious injury, was being trailed by at least five paparazzi when he collided with a white car that then swerved into oncoming traffic, TMZ reported.

The white car's driver was killed.

People magazine, a trusted conduit for Hollywood publicists, has reported that the motivational speaker turned reality TV star would open up in a forthcoming interview with ABC News.

Five people killed in US shooting

WASHINGTON: A US gunman opened fire at a house near Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, killing four people and wounding two children including relatives in a domestic dispute before turning the gun on himself.

A total of seven people were shot in the case in Douglasville, west of Atlanta, said Lieutenant Glenn Daniel of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

"It was a domestic situation," Daniel told AFP, adding that the shooter was a man, and that the two injured were children, who are now being treated in local hospitals.

"I have five including the shooter that are deceased," he said. "The shooter is deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The ages of the shooting victims ranged from seven to adult, he added.

But it was too early to disclose the age and gender of all of those shot, because relatives are still being notified.

It was not immediately disclosed how many of the victims were members of the same family, but some of the victims were relatives, Daniel said.

Cambodia deports US sisters in Angkor nude photo scandal

The Angkor Archaeological Park, a world heritage site, contains the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries, and is Cambodia's most popular tourist destination.

PHNOM PENH: Two American sisters have been deported from Cambodia after they were convicted of taking naked photos inside the country's famed Angkor temple complex, officials said on Sunday.

Lindsey Adams, 22, and her 20-year-old sister Leslie were discovered taking nude shots of each other inside the Preah Khan temple at the world heritage site on Friday.

The sisters were both given a suspended six-month prison sentence on Saturday evening on public exposure and making pornography charges and will be banned from re-entering Cambodia for four years, Koeut Sovannareth, prosecutor at northwestern Siem Reap provincial court told AFP.

"The court decided to expel them from Cambodia," he said, adding that the women had confessed to making a mistake and were fined $250.

Sam Reaksmey, a senior tourism police official in Siem Reap, said the sisters were deported late Saturday night.

It is the second time in the last fortnight that tourists visiting the sprawling temple complex have been caught without their clothes.

Three French tourists were deported last weekend after they pleaded guilty to taking nude pictures of each other inside another temple within the complex.

Cambodian officials say the women's actions are offensive because Angkor is considered sacred ground.

"They lowered their pants to their knees and took pictures of their buttocks," Keat Bunthan, a senior heritage police official in Siem Reap, told AFP on Saturday.

The three deported French men received the same suspended sentence as the American women.

The trio were caught just days after a series of photos of Asian women posing nude at ancient Cambodian temples went viral online and outraged officials who vowed to step up efforts to prevent similar stunts.

Acquittal or jail? Anwar to know fate Tuesday

The highest court in the country will make its ruling on whether to allow or dismiss Anwar's appeal to set aside his conviction and jail sentence.

KUALA LUMPUR: Acquittal or jail? Come Tuesday (Feb 10) Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was convicted by the Appeals Court of having sodomised his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan will know whether he will be spending time behind bars or walk free.

This will be answered on Feb 10 as the Federal Court will announce the much-awaited verdict on Anwar's final appeal against his conviction and five-year jail sentence for sodomising Mohd Saiful, seven years ago.

One of Anwar's lawyers, Ramkarpal Singh Deo, when contacted by Bernama, said the defence team "was confident that the verdict will be in their client's favour".

Asked whether the defence would file a review against the apex court's ruling if Anwar lost in his final appeal, Ramkarpal said it all depended on the grounds of the judgment, which they would need to study first before deciding to file a review.

Rule 137 of the Federal Court Rules 1995 allows the losing party to seek a review of a Federal Court decision.

Although the Federal Court has the jurisdiction to review its own decision to prevent injustice and abuse of the court process, generally this will only be exercised in very exceptional circumstances.

Lawyer Zamri Idrus, who is holding a watching brief for Mohd Saiful, said he left it to the court's discretion in making the ruling based on the authorities cited during the submissions and evidence presented in court.

On Nov 7, last year, a five-member panel of the Federal Court led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria reserved its decision after hearing submissions from Anwar's 15-strong defence team led by lawyer Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, a former Federal Court judge.

The team also included three children of the late lawyer Karpal Singh who was leading Anwar's defence team in the case until his untimely death on April 17, 2014. The senior lawyer was killed in a road accident in Perak.

They are Ramkarpal Singh Deo, Sangeet Kaur Deo and Gobind Singh Deo while senior lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah led the prosecution team.

The other four judges on the panel were Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif and Federal Court judges Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong, Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar and Datuk Ramly Ali.

The hearing of Anwar's appeal which was initially set for two days from Oct 28, 2014 dragged on for eight days as the defence and prosecution presented lengthy submissions and many legal cases were cited.

The highest court in the country will make its ruling on whether to allow or dismiss Anwar's appeal to set aside his conviction and jail sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal on March 7 last year, after it had overturned a High Court decision to acquit him.

If Anwar loses his appeal, he will be disqualified as the member of parliament (MP) for Permatang Pauh as per Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution, which states that an MP would be disqualified if he or she is
sentenced to a jail term of more than a year, or fined more than RM2,000.

The prosecution has also filed a cross-appeal to enhance the jail sentence.

However, the matter will only be heard if the Federal Court upholds the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal had found Anwar, 67, guilty of having sodomised Mohd Saiful, 27, at Unit 11-5-1 of Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, here, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.

The charge, under Section 377B of the Penal Code, carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

A total of 27 prosecution witnesses including star witness, Mohd Saiful, and eight defence witnesses including Anwar testified in the trial that took almost three years at the High Court which received attraction worldwide.

On Jan 9, 2012, the High Court acquitted and discharged Anwar of the charge on the grounds that the court could not be 100 per cent certain on the integrity of samples taken for DNA testing from the alleged victim.

The court had ruled that the samples could have been compromised before they reached the Chemistry Department for analysis.

However, the Court of Appeal in convicting Anwar on the sodomy charge, held at the trial judge had erred in his findings about the samples which were based on the evidence of two expert witnesses called by the defence.

This is the second sodomy case against Anwar. In the first case, he was found guilty of having sodomised his family's driver, Azizan Abu Bakar, at Tivoli Villa, here, in 1994, and was sentenced to nine years' jail by the High Court on Aug 8, 2000.

The High Court had ordered Anwar to serve the sentence after the completion of his six-year jail term for corruption. He was found guilty on four charges of corruption on April 4, 1999.

However, after spending nearly six years in jail for corruption, Anwar was released on Sept 2, 2004 as the Federal Court, led by Justice Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad who went on to become chief justice, overturned his conviction and set aside the jail sentence on the charge of having sodomised Azizan, in a 2-1 majority decision.

Abdul Hamid and Judge Tengku Baharudin Shah Tengku Mahmud ruled in Anwar's favour while Judge Datin Paduka Rahmah Hussein dissented.

However, Abdul Hamid, who wrote the majority judgment, said the judges found that Anwar and co-accused Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja "were involved in homosexual activities" and that the judges were inclined to believe that the alleged sodomy did take place.

Penjelasan Najib isu boikot mengecewakan
