polis berhampian sebulan sekali.

Spain fines Google for privacy 'violations'

MADRID:  Spain's data protection watchdog ordered US Internet giant Google on Thursday to pay a 900,000-euro (RM 4,023,876) fine for "serious violations" of users' privacy.

The Spanish Data Protection Agency accused the popular search provider of "illegal processing of personal data" obtained from users of various services such as Google email accounts.

Google's privacy policy enables it to track the activity of users across its search engine, Gmail, the Google+ social networking platform and other services it owns, which include YouTube.

"Google unlawfully collects and processes personal information" of users, the Spanish agency said in a statement.

"The agency considers that Google seriously violates the right to the protection of personal data."

It ordered Google to pay 300,000 euros ($410,000) for each of three breaches of Spain's data protection law and ordered it to bring its privacy policy in line with legal norms.

The agency said Google's privacy policy did not clearly inform users of how it uses the data collected, for example information from emails that is gathered to generate targeted advertising.

It also accused Google of keeping the data for longer than is legally justified and of making it difficult for users to query the use of their data.

Google has repeatedly stated that its privacy policy respects European law, despite investigations in several countries.

Google spokespeople could not immediately be reached to comment to AFP on Thursday but El Pais newspaper quoted the company as saying it had been "totally involved" in the agency's investigations.

It would "read the report carefully and then decide what steps to take next", the newspaper quoted Google as saying.

The Spanish authority launched proceedings against Google in June. In September, France too said it would take action against the company, accusing it of breaching privacy norms.

Authorities in Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Britain have also opened parallel procedures against Google.

The Spanish agency said it was the first of these six authorities to make a final decision on action against the US giant.

The European Union warned Google in October 2012 that its new data protection procedures did not comply with an EU directive on the subject and gave the company four months to change them. That deadline passed without any action, prompting France to set up the task force of individual member states pursuing the issue with Google.

Google has defended the changes it made last year, saying they simplify and standardise its approach across its various services.

Critics say the policy gives the operator of the world's largest search engine unprecedented ability to monitor its users.

Like other technology giants, Google has come under heightened scrutiny in recent months following revelations by US whistleblower Edward Snowden of online eavesdropping by intelligence agencies.
The Spanish Data Protection Agency is a state body with power to impose fines and to order data to be destroyed, according to its website.

In 2010 it filed a suit against Google for allegedly capturing data from Internet users when it collected photos for its Street View map service.

Kes skandal: Amiruddin cerai isteri talak satu

skandal adi putra

What's become of the $100 laptop

Back in 2006, at the height of interest in the One Laptop Per Child-fueled $100 computer, Iembarked on a quest to find such a device on the market -- with a catch. Since there were no such computers readily available in retail channels, the search was conducted via eBay for used, but still-capable PCs that cost less than $100. (It was a lot easier to find one that ran Windows than Mac OS.)

The past seven years have seen a lot of changes in the broader personal computing market. TheHisense Sero 7 LT, which arrived at Walmart earlier this year, exemplifies the kind of product that can now be considered the "$100 laptop" for the American mass market. Since then, others have followed. What it delivers, though, varies widely from what we thought such a device might look like.

IT'S NOT A LAPTOP

The Hisense Sero 7 LT is a consumer tablet, a category that didn't really exist back in 2006. Of course, the main drawback of this, when compared to the 2006 idea of a $100 laptop, is the lack of a physical keyboard (and maybe some screen protection). That said, the form factor shift has brought some advantages. While the LT isn't thin compared to other tablets, it's still thinner, lighter and smaller than most notebooks and its touchscreen is also easier to learn than a mouse or trackpad. And as modern tablets and smartphones have made the case, you don't need the keyboard much of the time anyway.

IT DOESN'T RUN WINDOWS (OR MAC OS)

And it doesn't have Intel inside. Of course, the original XO laptop (which was actually sold to individuals for much more than $100) didn't run those operating systems, either. As the initial XO drama unfolded, there was a war of words and products between OLPC and Intel, which offered the rival Classmate laptop. Neither company really won, but ARM-based alternatives have seen explosive growth in smartphones and tablets over the past few years, and with them, we've seen a shift to operating systems built on them.

One requirement for the 2006 experiment was to find a laptop that could run the latest version of Windows or Mac OS. But the Sero 7 LT runs a contemporary version of Android and supports Google Play, granting it access to about a million apps. Sidestepping the question of what a PC is, these apps cover traditional "PC" tasks such as web browsing, document creation, e-mail, messaging and even video chat with its front-facing camera, as well as a host of more recently popular smartphone-driven app categories including streaming media, social networking and casual games.

Many of these apps aren't as deep as those one would find on a Windows PC or Mac, but consider that consumers use PCs dramatically differently than they did seven years ago; that more app categories are becoming progressively (storage) or inherently (social networking) cloud-based, anyway. And high volumes and new software revenue models make many of them available for free or for a dollar or two.

IT (NOW) COSTS LESS THAN $99

The Sero 7 LT entered the market at $99, but, as HP did soon after entering the market with its 7-inch slate, Hisense cut the price not long after launch. (In this case, to $79.) In fact, Nextbook now offers an 8-inch tablet for $99. It would be great if one could spend the extra cash on a cheap Bluetooth keyboard, but, unlike the Sero 7 Pro, which is the Sero 7 LT's $149 Tegra 3-equipped sibling, the cheaper Hisense tablet doesn't include the short-range wireless standard. Still, one can attach a wired keyboard to its micro-USB connector (adapter included), bringing it even closer to the functionality, if not integration, of a laptop.

IT CONNECTS TO A TV

Unlike some early, inexpensive computers, such as the Commodore 64, the Sero 7 LT doesn't need an external display. However, if you have a modern TV, you can output a range of entertainment via its HDMI port. Sero 7 LT users could also spend a bit more and connect to their TVs wirelessly via Chromecast.
ITS CUSTOMERS SEEM TO LIKE IT

"How good can a $99 tablet be?" one may ask. The Sero 7 LT can't hold a candle to tablets such as the new Nexus 7 or iPad mini; it even compares pretty poorly to the more expensive (by $60) Sero 7 Pro. In addition to the lack of Bluetooth, it only has 4GB of on-board flash memory (although one can augment this with a microSD card) and has a battery life that is about half that of leading tablets.

But checking out the reviews for the Sero 7 LT at Walmart.com -- some of which were made when the device was priced at $99 -- reveals a generally positive reception. Most rated it at five stars. A few reviewers called it "excellent" for the price, while another called it the best and cheapest of the three tablets she's owned. The majority of reviewers said they would recommend it to a friend or family member.

IT'S NOT ALONE

In addition to a host of brands that are even less recognizable to US consumers, Walmart.com also carries the recent Nextbook 7-inch Android tablet at $60 and the 8-inch model at $99. And the floor's the limit on eBay. A bit further up the pricing chain, the XO brand has returned with the XO tablet from Vivitar, coming in at about $120 and including a host of educational content in English and Spanish from the OLPC project. (Yes, the latest effort from the non-profit that advocated the $100 laptop is neither less than $100 nor a laptop.)

Of course, Black Friday saw even deeper promotional pricing on tablets, including a deep, but ephemeral discount on the Dell Venue 8 Pro. The sub-$100 sector may well expand significantly in 2014, but 2013 will go down as the year that connected computing for a wide range of tasks became a more viable mainstream option for less than $100.

5.6-magnitude quake hits south Pakistan

KARACHI:  A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit south Pakistan early on Friday, seismologists said.

The quake struck at 00:28 am local time (1928 GMT) at the relatively shallow depth of five kilometres (three miles), 32 kilometres west of Warah in Sindh province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

In an initial assessment, the USGS said there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastated several areas, including Awaran in southwestern Baluchistan province, in September this year. It killed at least 376 people and left some 100,000 others homeless.--AFP

London theatre ceiling collapses during show, 88 wounded

London theatre ceiling collapses during show - AFP photo

LONDON:  The ceiling of a packed London theatre collapsed on the audience during a performance Thursday, wounding more than 88 people including children and leaving terrified theatregoers covered in blood and dust.

The incident happened at the Apollo Theatre during the West End show "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" and comes the week before Christmas when London's theatres are traditionally busy.

Witnesses heard creaking noises in the 112-year-old theatre before the collapse but thought it was part of the show, before a section of the ceiling collapsed and brought down parts of the balconies.

Rescuers commandeered a red London double decker bus to transport some of the wounded to hospital, according to AFP journalists at the scene.

Emergency services said that they did not believe there were any fatalities and that all those trapped after the incident had now been freed.

"We have treated 81 walking wounded and seven more seriously injured patients at the Apollo Theatre incident," London Ambulance Service said in a statement.

There were around 720 people in the audience at the time, the London Fire Brigade said.

"A section of the theatre's ceiling collapsed onto the audience who were watching the show. The ceiling took parts of the balconies down with it," senior firefighter Nick Harding said.

"In my time as a fire officer I've never seen an incident like this. I imagine lots of people were out enjoying the show in the run-up to Christmas."

The London Fire Brigades Union said that an "ornate ceiling of plaster and wooden supports collapsed".
AFPTV reporters saw several people being stretchered away from the scene.

Others including some with bandages on their heads were being treated in the lobby of the nearby Queen's Theatre, where the musical Les Miserables was showing, which had been turned into a triage centre.

Desmond Thomas, 18, part of a school party watching the show, said they heard noises before the accident.

"Maybe 10 minutes into the performance we heard a tap-tap noise, we thought it was rain," he told AFP.

"There was a crack and then it suddenly seemed to get bigger and suddenly it collapsed. The next thing we knew the whole theatre filled with dust and smoke."

A thunderstorm had hit London in the hour before the incident.

A red London bus took several casualties including a child to hospital afterwards, AFP journalists saw.
London hospitals said they were on major incident footing.

Pictures on social media showed people fleeing the theatre with head injuries and covered in dust.

Simon Usborne, a writer for the Independent newspaper, said there was a "cloud" of dust obscuring the stage after parts of masonry appeared to fall away.

"There was panic, there was screaming," he said.

Martin Bostock said he suffered a head injury after he was hit by falling debris.

"It was complete chaos in the theatre. Absolutely terrifying and awful," he told Britain's Sky News.

"I was in the lower stalls with my family in the early stages of the show.

"I think the front part of the balcony fell down. At first we thought it was part of the show.

"Then I got hit on the head.

"We got out with cuts and bruises. I think most people did." -- AFP

Zuckerberg sells as Facebook offers new shares

Cashing in some $2.3 billion - AFP photo

NEW YORK: Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg will sell a chunk of his stake in the company, cashing in some $2.3 billion, as part of a new share offering by the huge social network.

A Facebook filing Thursday said the company would sell 70 million shares in a follow-on offering to the huge initial public offering in May 2012.

Of the total amount, Zuckerberg will sell around 41 million shares, mainly to satisfy his tax obligations, the company said in a statement.

The 27 million new shares would raise some $1.5 billion for the company "for working capital and other general corporate purposes," the statement said.

Zuckerberg's sale will have little impact on his control of the company he co-founded from his Harvard University dormitory.

He owns an estimated 29 percent of Facebook capital, but based on the dual classes of stock, he will still hold 56.1 percent of the voting rights after the new offering, down from 58.8 percent.

With the proxies he holds for other shareholders, Zuckerberg will control 62.8 percent of the voting rights after the new offering, down from 65.2 percent.

The company said Zuckerberg will exercise his option to purchase 60 million Class B shares and then convert the shares to Class A for the sale.

Each Class A share has one voting right, while Class B shares have 10 voting rights.

Another early Facebook investor, entrepreneur Marc Andreessen, will sell some 1.6 million shares in the offering.

The filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission also notes that Zuckerberg plans to donate 18 million shares to an unspecified beneficiary. He and his wife Priscilla last year gave a similar amount to a Silicon Valley foundation.

One of the reasons for the new Facebook offering is to meet expected demand with Facebook being added to the Standard & Poor's 500 index. That requires portfolio managers who own the stock index to buy Facebook shares.

Being added to the S&P 500 comes at the end of a year in which Facebook climbed out from the wreckage of its much-hyped but quickly panned stock market debut early in 2012. Facebook has been on an upward cycle since earnings showed a jump in mobile advertising revenue.

Zuckerberg's net worth was estimated by Forbes magazine at $19 billion at the end of September, making him the 25th richest person in the United States and 66th wealthiest in the world.

Facebook stock fell by more than half after the 2012 IPO at $38, but have doubled since August and hit record highs in recent weeks. The shares closed down 0.94 percent Thursday at $55.05, not far from its all-time high of $55.89.

The world's leading online social network reported profit of $425 million in the quarter that ended on September 30, compared with a loss a year earlier. Revenues rose sharply to $2.016 billion

Facebook earlier this week began serving up video ads that pop up and play when users check their news feeds. The leading online social network said it is testing the new advertising technique this week with a clip teasing the new film "Divergent."

Analysts at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch estimated that video ads could generate a 10 to 15 percent lift in revenues for Facebook.

The consultancy eMarketer said Facebook has become the second largest seller of digital advertising behind Google, and that Facebook will take in 7.4 percent of net US digital ad dollars, or $3.17 billion, in 2013. --AFP

Kuala Lumpur traffic police investigating officer Insp Azizah Nur Muhamat said they had asked the British High Commission here to relay the sad news to Hall's family.

"They are expected to arrive in the country from Britain this Sunday to claim his body," she said when contacted by Bernama today.

In the 12.45am incident, Hall, 40, a manager with Leighton Offshore here, three Filipino women, Siso Aileen, 30, Maileen Tentative Montejo, 26, and Mary Grace Macaraig, 24, and two Myanmar nationals, Pi Pi, 20, and Esther Sui, 26, were killed when the Nissan Skyline car they were in crashed into a pillar at the roundabout and caught fire.
