Artis Hollywood obses kurus!

Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie

Nicole Richie

Bintang realiti ini sering kali menafikan bahawa dia terlalu mengamalkan diet. Bagaimanapun, setelah berat badannya turun mendadak, Richie sedar ia tidak normal dan berusaha mendapatkan berat badan ideal.

Tori Spelling

Angelina Jolie hidup tiga tahun lagi?

Betul ke ni?

Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie

Mechanical gears: insects got there first

When it comes to engineering, humans are an innovative bunch.

But sometimes, it turns out that the natural world got there first. Scientists have discovered that a certain type of plant-hopping insect boasts mechanical gears that are astonishingly similar to those in our bikes and car gearboxes.

Scanning electron micrograph image of the tiny insect gears (image credit: Malcolm Burrows)

Researchers in the UK made the discovery after filming high-speed videos of the Issus coleoptratus nymph as it jumped. They noticed that the young insects sported curved strips of gear teeth on their hind legs.

Before leaping forward, the baby planthoppers lock together these tiny gears. The researchers say that this ensures both legs move simultaneously - within a fraction of a second of each other - propelling the insect powerfully from leaf to leaf.

"We usually think of gears as something that we see in human-designed machinery," said Gregory Sutton at the University of Bristol, "but we've found that this is only because we didn't look hard enough."

Interestingly, the gears are only found in the nymph stage of the insect – they disappear when the insect undergoes its final moult to become an adult. It’s not known why they vanish, but it may be because any damage to the gear teeth during adulthood would reduce the mechanism's effectiveness.

These incredible gears are the very first example of a functional cog mechanism in nature – proof that evolution is perhaps the best engineer of all.

Datsun unveils $9,000 family car

Datsun Go+. Image by FoxNews

Just two months after it introduced the $7,000 Go hatchback, the recently resurrected automaker has unveiled its second model, the aptly named seven-passenger Go+.

More of a 5+2, the stretched subcompact gets a larger cargo area fitted with a set of small folding jump seats and a price tag of just $9,000.

That would be approximately RM28,600 in Malaysia.

Powered by a tiny 1.2-liter four cylinder, it’s not exactly fit for the Autobahn, and not meant to be as it will initially be built and sold in Indonesia, where it should be more than adequate for the nation’s extremely crowded city streets.

But while it would likely be just fine for budget minded commuters in L.A. or Manhattan, too, Datsun is not coming back to the United States.

At least not yet.

“The level of passion and memories for Datsun in the U.S. is amazing, so it is kind of heartbreaking for me to say that there is no plan to bring Datsun to the U.S. at this time,” the brand’s corporate vice president, Vuincent Cobee, recently told the Los Angeles Times. But he added that “we never say never,” which is surely enough to keep the flames of the faithful alive.

In the meantime, they can move to India, Russia or South Africa, which are additional target markets for the brand’s expansion.

How bad do you want to want a deal on your next car?

'Bigfoot' undang wartawan National Geographic

Government urged to reduce subsidy for sugar

Gov urged to reduce subsidy for sugar

The government has been urged to reduce subsidy for sugar as a means to discourage people from using sugar in their food and drinks daily, thus reducing the danger of diabetes among Malaysians.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said a reduction in subsidy for sugar, in stages, can reduce the consumption of sugar in their daily meals.

"The number of diabetic patients in the country has increased to 2.6 million or 15 percent of the total population. This is partly due to lack of control in the intake of sugar," he told reporters after opening a diabetes awareness campaign in the Segamat Parliamentary constituency at the Buloh Kasap
Multi-purpose hall, here, on Sunday.

He added that the figure (2.6 million) was not including about two million people who have not undergone medical checkup at government hospitals and clinics.

Dr Subramaniam said diabetic patients were also vulnerable to other diseases, including kidney ailments and eye sight.

He said based on statistics, there were 16,000 kidney patients in the waiting list for kidney transplant because there are only 40 to 50 organ donors a year.

Somali rebels kill 39 in Nairobi shopping mall bloodbath

Somali rebels kill 39 in Nairobi shopping mall bloodbath

NAIROBI: Masked gunmen stormed a packed upmarket shopping mall in Nairobi on Saturday, killing 39 people and wounding 150 more in a massacre claimed by Somalia's Al Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels.

Kenyan officials said "major operations" were underway in the early hours of Sunday as troops were engaged in an apparent final bid to put an end to the 14-hour-long battle. They said the heavily-armed attackers were still holding hostages inside the complex.

The rebels said the carnage was in direct retaliation for Kenya's military intervention in Somalia, where African Union troops are battling the Islamists.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a televised address to the nation that he had "personally lost family members in the Westgate attack", but said the country had "overcome terrorist attacks before, and we will defeat them again."

"Our security forces are in the process of neutralising the attackers and securing the mall," he said.

"They want to cause fear and despondency in our country, but we will not be cowed," Kenyatta said, adding: "Terrorism is a philosophy of cowards."

Kenyan police described the attackers as a well-organised "terror gang" numbering around 10.

The Westgate mall, popular with wealthy Kenyans and expatriates and part Israeli-owned, was packed with around 1,000 shoppers when the gunmen marched in at midday, tossed grenades and sprayed automatic gunfire.

After hours of sometimes ferocious gun battles, security sources said police and soldiers had finally "pinned down" the gunmen and managed to evacuate hundreds of shoppers and staff -- some of whom had spent hours in hiding.

"We will free all those inside and stop this, of course we cannot give details of the operations except to say that everything that can be done is being done," an armed Kenyan plain clothes security officer told AFP at the scene.

One teenager recounted to AFP how he played dead to avoid being killed.

"I heard screams and gunshots all over the place. I got scared. I tried to run down the stairs and saw someone running towards the top, I ran back and hid behind one of the cars," he said from his hospital bed at MP Shah Hospital, where he was nursing burns to his hands and chest.

'We warned Kenya'

A spokesman for Shebab said the attack was a response to Kenya's nearly two-year-old military presence in war-torn Somalia in support of the internationally-backed government.

"We have warned Kenya of that attack but it ignored (us), still forcefully holding our lands... while killing our innocent civilians," Shebab's spokesman Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement.

"If you want Kenya in peace, it will not happen as long as your boys are in our lands," the statement said.

The group also issued a string of statements via Twitter.

"The Mujahideen entered #Westgate Mall today at around noon and are still inside the mall, fighting the #Kenyan Kuffar (infidels) inside their own turf," the group said, before the account was suspended by Twitter.

The group said Muslims inside the centre had been "escorted out by the Mujahideen before beginning the attack."

The gunmen were "holding their ground. All praise is due to Allah!", the group said.

The attack was the worst in Nairobi since an Al-Qaeda bombing at the US embassy killed more than 200 in 1998.

Shoppers executed

Shocked people of all races could be seen running away from the mall clutching children while others crawled along walls to avoid stray bullets.

A shop manager who managed to escape said at one point "it seemed that the shooters had taken control of all the mall".

"They spoke something that seemed like Arabic or Somali," said a man who escaped the mall and gave his name only as Jay. "I saw people being executed after being asked to say something."

Kenyan troops could be seen moving around and inside the shopping centre while special forces had joined the operation. Foreign security officials -- from Israel, the United States and Britain -- were also seen at the complex.

An AFPTV reporter said she saw at least 20 people rescued from a toy shop. Dozens of wounded, some of them bleeding children, were taken away from the mall on stretchers.

Police at the scene said a suspect wounded in the firefight had been detained and taken to hospital under armed guard, but that he later died of his injuries.

Kenneth Kerich, who was shopping when the attack happened, described scenes of panic.

"I suddenly heard gunshots and saw everyone running around so we lied down. I saw two people who were lying down and bleeding, I think they were hit by bullets," he said.

An eyewitness who survived the assault said he saw the body of a child being wheeled out of the mall.

"The gunmen tried to fire at my head but missed. I saw at least 50 people shot," mall employee Sudjar Singh told AFP.

Vehicles riddled with bullet holes were left abandoned in front of the mall as the Red Cross appealed for blood donations and police instructed Nairobi residents to stay away.

Security agencies have regularly included the Westgate shopping centre on lists of sites they feared could be targeted by Al Qaeda-linked groups.

Paris confirmed that two French citizens were among those killed in what it condemned as a "cowardly" attack. Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper said two Canadians, one of them a diplomat, were also among the dead.

The United States said its citizens were reportedly among those injured and the White House condemned the "despicable" act.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that there were "undoubtedly British nationals caught up in this so we should be ready for that".

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was following the attack "closely and with alarm", a statement from his office said.

Bon Jovi thrills crowd at Rio gig

Bon Jovi thrills crowd at Rio gig

US rock group Bon Jovi wowed more than 90,000 fans during a stirring overnight performance at the Rock in Rio festival.

The New Jersey rockers, who are on a "Because We Can" Latin American concert tour to promote their chart-topping new album "What About Now", were the star attraction on the fifth day of the week-long festival.

"Obrigado (Thank you in Portuguese), Rio De Janeiro," lead singer Jon Bon Jovi told the crowd.

The band launched into "You Give Love A Bad Name" and the entire crowd joined in as they belted out such classics as "Livin On A Prayer", "Dead or Alive" and "Always".

In the middle of a raucous "Who Says You Can't Go Home", Jon Bon Jovi dragged a female fan onto the stage and surprised her with a smooch on the mouth.

The band also paid tribute to the Rolling Stones with a rendition of "Start Me Up".

But Bon Jovi was without its famous drummer Tico Torres, who awaited bladder surgery and was replaced by Rich Scannella.

On September 11, 59-year-old Torres underwent emergency appendectomy surgery in Mexico City, forcing the band to postpone scheduled concerts in Mexico, Argentina and Chile.

Saturday night, Americans Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer were to get star billing at what is one of the world's largest music events.

The festival, which features 127 bands and artists, was opened last Saturday by US diva Beyonce and French DJ David Guetta. - AFP

Washington gunman stalked his victims like a hunter: FBI

Washington gunman 'hunted' victims: FBI

The gunman who slaughtered 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard stalked his victims like a "hunter," officials said Thursday in the chilling first portrait of how the carnage unfolded.

FBI Director James Comey told reporters that former Navy sailor Aaron Alexis had roamed the offices and corridors of the Navy Yard's 197 building, blasting victims at random with a sawed-off shotgun before being shot dead.

Alexis, 34, was killed in a gun battle with police after being cornered following Monday's bloody spree.

Comey's account of the rampage came after analysis of security camera footage taken inside the 197 building.

The FBI chief said that after driving into the naval installation in the heart of the US capital early Monday, Alexis had headed into building 197 and gone into a fourth floor restroom, carrying a bag.

He came out of the the restroom moments later holding a sawed-off Remington 870 shotgun and began blazing away at anyone who crossed his path, Comey said.

"He emerged from the bathroom a few minutes after 8:00 am with the shotgun and almost immediately started to shoot folks on the fourth floor in a way with no discernible pattern," Comey told reporters.

"It appears to me that he was wandering the hall like hunting people to shoot."

After shooting people on the fourth and third floors of the building, Alexis went down to the ground floor, shot dead a security guard and seized the man's weapon -- a semi-automatic Beretta pistol.

He then returned to the third and fourth floors and continued shooting from the shotgun until he was out of ammunition.

Alexis then began shooting with the slain security guard's gun.

"That continued until the first responders arrived and then our team arrived and cornered him and sustained exchanged fire with him and he was downed and obviously killed at the scene," Comey said.

Comey said Alexis appeared to be selecting his victims at random.

"From the video... he appears to be moving without particular direction or purpose, his movements don't appear, at least to me, as if he was looking for a particular person or a particular group," the FBI chief said.

"When you look at the folks who were shot and the folks who are alive, they're all people from different backgrounds, from all over the building."

US officials acknowledged Wednesday missing "red flags" about the deeply troubled Alexis that may have averted the rampage.

It has emerged that Alexis had a security clearance that granted him access to the Navy Yard despite a record of misconduct in the Navy and run-ins with the law, including two shooting incidents and a Rhode Island police report showing he suffered from severe delusions.

Sebastian Vettel won Singapore Grand Prix, marches towards title

Sebastian Vettel delivered a masterful performance to win the Singapore Grand Prix and move closer to his fourth consecutive world title.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel cruised to a third straight Singapore Grand Prix victory on Sunday and moved 60 points clear of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso after a dominant drive under the floodlights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

The German led from pole to flag and lapped on average almost two seconds quicker than his rivals to finish 32.6 seconds clear of Alonso and take another big step towards a fourth successive title with six races remaining.

Kimi Raikkonen shrugged off back pain to climb from 13th on the grid to third for Lotus in a challenging race that was held up by one decisive safety car period when Daniel Ricciardo crashed his Toro Rosso into the barriers on lap 26.

"Yes, yes, that's what I call in control," Vettel shouted over the team radio after chalking up his seventh win of the season and 33rd of his career.

"The car felt absolutely fantastic. This is absolutely a team effort."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said Vettel, who was again booed on the podium from some in the crowd below, had been in a league of his own after "one of his best ever drives".

Vettel was challenged briefly by fellow-German Nico Rosberg, who was second on the grid, on the run to the first turn but once he held off the Mercedes, he controlled the race.

Alonso again used a charging start and brilliant strategy to climb from seventh on the grid and keep his title hopes alive. He gambled on pitting for a change of tyres during the safety car period and nursing his Ferrari all the way to the flag on medium tyres.

"We knew we didn't have the pace today so we had to invent something with a different strategy from the other teams," said the Spaniard.

"It paid off at the end. We are in a position in the championship where we have nothing to lose."

Raikkonen, who will join Alonso at Ferrari next season, duplicated the Spaniard's strategy and was able to hold on for third place from the fast-charging Mercedes duo of Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who opted to stay out behind the safety car. Alonso's Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa finished in sixth place with McLaren's Jenson Button and Sergio Perez claiming the next two spots ahead of Nico Hulkenburg's Sauber and Adrian Sutil in a Force India.

Vettel's team mate Mark Webber briefly climbed up to fourth place in the closing stages but his Red Bull lost power on the last lap and he slipped out of the top 10. There was also disappointment for Romain Grosjean, who started third on the grid but retired on lap 33 after his Lotus suffered a pneumatic system failure and was called in by his team to retire in the pits.
