Hyundai Elantra facelift spotted in Malaysia

A trailer load of the yet-to-be-launched Hyundai Elantra MD facelift has been spotted near the Juru toll in Seberang Perai by reader Derrick Ooi (cheers mate!).

While Inokom has been assembling the car in Kulim, Kedah for export to Thailand since last year, oto.my ads have begun appearing, and we hear the car is already in showrooms, so it should be our turn soon.

Various ads on our sister classifieds sitemention 1.6 Elegance, 1.6 Premium and 1.8 Premium variants, with indicative prices ranging from RM84k to RM119k.

The listings also suggest that the top two variants will get six airbags, with 17-inch alloys for the 1.8 model as opposed to 16s for the smaller-engined models.

The Hyundai Elantra MD facelift debuted in South Korea in August 2013, packing reshaped front and rear bumpers, new projector headlamps with LED light guides, vertical fog lamps that sit within L-shaped housings, chrome door handles and LED combination tail lamps, amongst others.

The interior sees the previously awkwardly-positioned air vents move upwards. The climate control cluster has been revised for a more modern look, and the gear lever is now a leather-gaitered in-line-type (previously gated and without gaiter).

Also new is a 3.5-inch OLED Supervision display, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sonata LF’s Android-based touch-screenhere on higher-spec cars.

Everything underneath maintains status quo – 130 PS 1.6 litre Gamma and 150 PS 1.8 litre Nu four-cylinder engines, connected to a six-speed auto gearbox.

Interestingly, at the point of its launch in 2012, the original Elantra MD was one of the very few C-segment sedans to be available with a manual gearbox in Malaysia (1.6 MT Standard), but, as you would’ve guessed, we’ll have to do without a clutch pedal option this time.

Law students challenge themselves by running ice cream business

From left Mohd Hafiz Baharudin, Nurin Hasanah Rahim Zain, Ahmad Faris Jalil, Nadiatul Liyana Zainuddin, Imran Sheik and co-founder John Isaac

A typical law student would fill his free time with studying, reading up on past cases, or even engage in debating with fellow students.

A group of law students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam decided to venture into something else - making ice-cream.

The Sangkaya SS15, Subang Jaya is a collaborative effort by five undergraduate law students with Sangkaya founders Ivy Sangrida Kaya and John Isaac Ho, in serving the fresh coconut ice cream.

The story began when one of the partners, Imran Sheik, 24, decides to try out the coconut ice cream, located in Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang.

"My curiosity led me to try the coconut ice cream and I loved the flavor and the concept. I spoke to Job about it as I wanted to learn more about the concept," Imran said.

Sangkaya is a coconut ice cream that can be enjoyed with coconut flakes, roasted peanuts, red bean, sweet corn and nestum.

Imran liked it so much and kept going back. He even brought four of his fellow classmates to try it.

They all loved the non-dairy, no egg and vegan-friendly dessert and suggested to open up their very own stall.

Their subsequent talk with co-founder John who himself, is an enthusiast in creating and supporting the entrepreneurial environment, agreed to give them the license to operate his business.

Finally, Imran together with Nurin Hasanah Rahim Zain, 25, Ahmad Faris Jalil, 23, Nadiatul Liyana Zainuddin, 23 and Mohd Hafiz Baharudin, 23 become the business partners of Sangkaya SS15.

Asked if the business venure took up their studying time, Imran said:

"Personally, I think students can allocate their time for study, fun and extracurricular works. If a student particularly work to get money, he or she would need to reduce the time of having fun.

"As students, we sometimes have to do our revision in the shop, especially when exams are around the corner," added Imran.

He said being young, the youths' biggest challenge is lack of experience.

"Youth have a lot of energy but less experience. So when we do a business, it is not the same as what we were doing the assignment in class.

"You will lose money if business is slow but you just lose some marks if you miss your assignment dateline. So we need to gain lot of experience, " said Imran.

"We are not from a wealthy family. So with the current economic state, it’s better for us to work hard now, save money so that when we are older, we can have fun and spend the money. The concept is work hard now, have fun later, "said Imran.

Almost all of their classmates at the Law Faculty, UiTM tended their grand launch ceremony.

One of them, Mustabshira Fahmi, 23, a final year law student came along with her husband, Aker Nadjmi, 23 who is also her classmate.

"They invite us to visit their stall but we could not find the time. Seeing many Sangkaya ice cream pictures uploaded everywhere in social media, we decided to came here and give our support to them," said Mustabshira.

2015 Nissan X-Trail launched in Malaysia - RM142,800 to RM165,800

Previewed back in December, the new Nissan X-Trail has officially gone on sale – the third-gen iteration of the mid-size SUV was launched a while ago at Edaran Tan Chong Motor’s (ETCM) new Nissan 3S centre in Glenmarie, Shah Alam.

The X-Trail – which premiered in Frankfurt in 2013 – makes its local debut in 2.0 litre and 2.5 litre forms, both CKD locally-assembled. The vehicle sits on Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Common Module Family (CMF) platform, and from a design perspective, is a marked step away from its predecessors’ boxy and conservative shapes.

The base X-Trail is powered by a 2.0 litre mill, and the new Twin CVTC MR20DD direct injection unit is good for 144 PS at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. As for the 2.5 litre, the QR25DE-k2 lump has 171 PS at 6,000 rpm and 233 Nm at 4,000 rpm for output numbers.

The engines are paired with the automaker’s latest Xtronic CVT gearbox with ECO mode and a seven-speed manual mode, a feature absent in both B17 Sylphy and L33 TeanaCVT sedans. As for drive configurations, the 2.0 is 2WD or front-wheel drive, while the 2.5 litre model is shod with Nissan’s All Mode Intelligent 4X4-i system.

The latter offers three drive modes – two-wheel drive, Auto Mode (which automatically changes torque distribution between front and rear wheels when driving on paved or slippery roads) and 4WD Lock Mode (50:50) for permanent four-wheel drive. Operation is selectable via a knob on the centre console.

The SUV features an Active Chassis Control package that includes Active Ride Control, Active Engine Brake and Active Trace Control functions. Active Ride Control controls engine torque as well as braking to moderate pitching motion on bumpy roads, while Active Engine Brake tells the Xtronic CVT to add a degree of engine braking when cornering or coming to a stop.

As for Active Trace Control, that automatically applies small amounts of braking to the individual wheels during cornering to reduce understeer – the system engages at any point in the corner, whether at entry, mid-corner or exit. Both variants feature Hill Start Assist (for slopes above 5%), and the 2.5 litre 4WD variant gets Hill Descent Control (only in 4WD Lock mode, speed locked between 4-15 km/h).

The new X-Trail features a 5+2 seating configuration, and the small, contingency third-row seats – which come with three-point seat belts – can of course be flat folded 50:50 into the floor. Folded as such, boot space is 550 litres, and with both third and second-row 60:40 split seats folded flat, cargo carrying space increases to 1,520 litres. A compartment under the boot floor keeps the tonneau cover in place when needed.

In terms of equipment, the 2.0 2WD gets daytime running lights, automatic (halogen) headlamps, keyless entry with push start ignition and dual-zone climate control (with rear vents). There’s also an Advance Drive Assist Display (five-inch colour display, between the dials), steering buttons, leather steering/shift knob, cruise control as well as Nissan’s Around View Monitor and a reverse camera.

The 2.5 4WD has all the above, and adds on LED headlamps, leather seats, a 10-way powered driver’s seat and four-way powered passenger seat as well as auto wipers. The variant also features a different panel finishing (in fake carbon fibre, while the 2.0 2WD has silver/grey trim).

As for safety kit, both variants are equipped with dual-airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Hill Start Assist and Isofix on top of the Active Chassis Control components mentioned above. Both X-Trail versions get identical 17-inch wheels and 225/65 rubber, meaning that the only way to differentiate them externally is via the headlamps (halogen vs LED).

Five colours are available, these being Tungsten Silver, Titanium Olive, Graphite Blue, Brilliant White and Diamond Black. Finally, pricing – the new Nissan X-Trail is priced at RM142,800 for the 2.0L 2WD and RM165,800 for the 2.5L 4WD (on-the-road, with insurance). An optional TCAT Multimedia Navigation unit can be had for RM3,800. The X-Trail comes with a three-year or 100,000 km warranty (whichever comes first) as well as free three-year maintenance service.

Indonesia struggles to retrieve AirAsia fuselage

An AFP file photo showing the wreckage of Flight QZ8501 on the seabed of the Java Sea.

JAKARTA: Indonesian salvage teams failed again Sunday to retrieve the fuselage of AirAsia Flight 8501 from the seabed after a sling snapped during a sudden change in the weather, officials said.

In the past two days the teams have been using giant inflatable bags to raise the fuselage, which lies in the Java Sea at a depth of around 30 metres (98 ft), to make it easier to find bodies believed trapped inside.

On Sunday they managed to lift the fuselage to the surface for only two minutes before the sling snapped, a navy official overseeing the search and rescue operation told AFP.

"We managed to float (the fuselage) and we were about to move it to the tugboat when the rope snapped due to an extreme change in the weather," Rear Admiral Widodo, who goes by one name, told AFP.

One body came out of the fuselage before it fell back to the seabed.

A total of 70 bodies have been found so far, search and rescue official S. B. Supriyadi said.

The crashed jet's black boxes -- the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder -- have been recovered and investigators are analysing them.

Flight QZ8501 went down on December 28 in stormy weather, during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. There were 162 people on board.

Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said last week that the plane climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea.

Just moments before it disappeared off the radar, the pilot had asked to climb to avoid a major storm but was not immediately granted permission due to heavy air traffic.

Outstanding Rosicky seals Arsenal 3 - 2 win over Brighton

Cup Fourth Round, Amex Stadium - Brighton 2 (O'Grady 24 Baldock 75) Arsenal 3 (Walcott 2 Ozil 24 Rosicky 59)

Arsenal qualified for the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Brighton, with goals from the returning Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil.

It took just two minutes for Arsenal to break the deadlock, when Calum Chambers cross to Walcott after a powerful run down the right wing, and Walcott's close control and quick finish beat David Stockdale.

Ozil then made it two when Santi Cazorla had time and space to slip him through, and the German coolly converted.

In the second half, Laurent Koscielny's woeful clearance fell to Chris O'Grady, who slammed in a shot at the near post to pull a goal back after just five minutes. Less than 10 minutes later, Tomas Rosicky's brilliant volley restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, Sam Baldock pulled one back with a good finish. Arsenal were able to hold on, and were the more likely of the two sides to score again.
