Wow, this is big. First, we received photos of a Proton compact crossover, a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza; now we’ve been sent in a mysterious brochure by regular contributor (and Proton Design Competition 2014 winner) Pow Ying Hern, revealing a Proton SUV! The Extrema, as it is called, is expected to be launched on April 1, 2017, after the launch of the Perdana, Persona and Saga sedans.
No details have been revealed just yet, just the photos seen here. It’s certainly a very contemporary looking vehicle, with xenon headlights with LED positioning lights, a big grille with the Proton Wings (and the new three-dimensional logo), silver skid plates and LED daytime running lights.
At the rear, there are integrated exhaust exits and neat tail lights that blend into the rear windscreen, and the car sits on 19-inch wheels. The interior is also very appealing, with brown dashboard, brown leather seats and plenty of silver trim to lend a more upmarket appearance.
Expect the Extrema to be powered by the national carmaker’s new 1.5 litre turbocharged and direct-injected TGDI engine – in its most powerful configuration, it’s projected to produce 180 hp and 250 Nm. Front- and four-wheel drive should be made available, matched to the new torque converter CVT.
