35 killed in China oil pipeline explosion: government

BEIJING:  An oil pipeline exploded Friday in the Chinese coastal city of Qingdao, killing 35 people, state media said, in the latest deadly industrial accident in the country.

The force of the blast ripped roads apart, turning cars over and sending thick black smoke billowing over the city, pictures showed.

One pedestrian had a leg blown off and another man's head was crushed under a piece of concrete debris.

The pipeline, run by state-owned oil giant Sinopec, sprang a leak early Friday and exploded several hours later as workers sought to repair it, the Qingdao municipal government said in its verified account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

At least 35 people were killed, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The Qingdao municipal government earlier had said when the toll was at 22 that it could rise further and the number of injured had yet to be confirmed. Its Sina Weibo account was not immediately updated with the total reported by Xinhua.

The explosion site in the eastern province of Shandong is close to the coast and barriers had been set up to stop oil leaking into the sea, it said.

China has a dismal record on industrial safety as lax law enforcement and corruption enables business owners to cut corners or offer bribes to evade standards.

Around 28,000 people were killed or went missing in workplace accidents in the first half of this year, state media have reported.

Sorry for '70s porn star' slur

Sorry for '70s porn star' slur

SYDNEY:  A strategist for Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's Liberal party apologised on Thursday after describing a person widely reported to be the Indonesian foreign minister as resembling "a 1970s Filipino porn star".

Mark Textor made the derogatory comment on Twitter as ties between Canberra and Jakarta plunged to their lowest point in years after a series of spying allegations.

"Apology demanded from Australia by a bloke who looks like a 1970's Pilipino (sic) porn star and has ethics to match," said the tweet, which has since been deleted.

Reports said he was referring to Marty Natalegawa, who has demanded Canberra apologise after documents leaked by US intelligence fugitive Edward Snowden showed Australia tried to listen to the phone calls of the Indonesian president, his wife and ministers in 2009.

However, although Textor apologised, he said he was not referring to "anyone in particular" when the ABC cornered him at Parliament House in Canberra.

"Apologies to my Indonesian friends -- frustrated by media-driven divisions -- Twitter is indeed no place for diplomacy," he later tweeted, adding, "Conduct unbecoming".

Textor touts himself as being in Abbott's "inner circle", the ABC said, and his market research firm Crosby Textor has been associated with the Liberal Party for many years.

Labor opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek said his comment would do nothing to repair relations with Jakarta and called on Abbott to distance himself from Textor.

"Frankly I was quite shocked. They're highly inappropriate comments, I'm pleased to be told they've now been taken off the Twitter feed," she told reporters.

"The prime minister must disassociate himself, the Liberal Party, and the Australian government from them immediately and unequivocally."

Former Australian prime minister Malcolm Fraser also weighed in, demanding on Twitter that Textor be sacked immediately, while Greens leader Christine Milne called the remarks "appalling".

"Clearly he's a close confidant of the Liberal party and it says quite a lot about what they think in those back rooms," she told the ABC.

"This sort of tweet will be seen as just further inflaming the situation, particularly because of the close relationship between Mark Textor and the prime minister and the Liberal party in general."

Abbott's office did not return calls for comment.

On Wednesday, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono suspended cooperation with Australia in the sensitive area of people-smuggling in retaliation to the spying claims.

He also announced that cooperation would be temporarily halted in a number of other areas, including military exercises and intelligence exchanges.

Indonesia recalled its ambassador from Canberra earlier this week over the scandal and Yudhoyono has publicly lambasted Abbott on Twitter for what he called a lack of remorse.

'Dead' baby wakes at funeral parlour

'Dead' baby wakes at funeral parlour

BEIJING:  A Chinese baby boy who had been declared dead was saved from being cremated alive when he started crying at a funeral parlour, media reported Thursday.

The parents of the critically-ill boy, who was less than one month old, had agreed to end his medical treatment at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital in eastern China, hospital sources told Xinhua state news agency.

A death certificate was issued before the baby was sent to a funeral parlour in Hefei, the provincial capital -- only for staff there to be alerted by crying on Wednesday.

It was unclear how long he had been at the funeral parlour, or when his cremation had been due.

The baby was immediately sent back to the hospital, several news outlets including the Beijing News reported on Thursday.

"Because the baby still had life signs, we continued to give him transfusion to maintain his life for humanitarian reasons," a hospital staff member told Xinhua.

The baby was born with a "congenital respiratory system malformation", the report added.

The baby was receiving treatment at the hospital late Wednesday, reports said.

A doctor was suspended, a nursing worker laid off and an investigation launched into the incident, the hospital said, according to Xinhua.

Sex with daughter

Sex with daughter

PETALING JAYA:  A 46-year-old food stall operator in Kajang has been engaging in sexual relationship  with his 21-year-old daughter whenever his wife is not around, the Star reported today.

They would have carried on with their three-year-old affair if not for an uncle who found out about it when he found steamy text messages from the father to daughter.

A police source said the uncle who had borrowed the woman’s handphone to make a call as his handphone battery had died, stumbled upon the text messages.

After being questioned, the woman who has been working in the uncle’s hair salon since completing her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), confessed that she was a willing partner in the relationship and added that she was in love with her father.

The uncle had then brought the woman home and confronted her father, in the presence of her mother.

The woman revealed she last had sex with her father in October and added that he gave her money each time after sex.

Although the woman was reluctant to lodge a police report, the uncle insisted and brought her to the Kajang police station as he was worried the same fate would befall her nine-year-old sister.

The man has been remanded until Nov 26 to facilitate investigations under Section 376A of the Penal Code for incest, while his daughter has been sent to the Kajang Hospital for a medical check-up.

The offence carries a jail sentence of between six and 20 years, and whipping upon conviction.

Legal sources said that if the father is charged with the offence, she could also be liable under Section 376A, depending on the circumstances of the case.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers will then decide if the woman was a victim or should be charged as well.

Pasangan Alvivi gagal batal pertuduhan
