Not true: Perodua Axia ‘steering lock’ viral allegations

Remember the “Perodua Axia steering lock” issue that surfaced earlier this year? Looks like the issue is still actively circulating in social networks, because Perodua has just released a statement by its managing director Datuk Dr. Zahari Husin. Below is the statement in full

It has come to our attention that there have been allegations on social media regarding a steering lock issue with our Perodua Axia.

We wish to assure our customers that the allegations on this issue are false as Perodua and several government agencies have conducted detailed investigations on the alleged cases.
We regret that some quarters are actively attacking our brand and we are working with the authorities to identify those involved and we will consider appropriate action deemed fit.
We assure our customers that all our vehicles have undergone strict safety procedures and tests set both by our own quality control mechanism as well as by government agencies such as SIRIM and the Road Transportation Department (JPJ).

Perodua has always ensured that quality and safety are integral parts of all our products, services and processes as we place great value on the wellbeing of our customers and staff.
We always welcome any feedback from our customers and have a dedicated team to solve any issues regarding our products and services, if any.
Thank you.

The original “steering lock” accident happened in Penang in June. According to the driver involved, the accident happened in the rain and when he was driving between 70 to 80 km/h on the Second Penang Bridge. The driver alleged that the steering of his car suddenly “locked” and could not be turned. He slammed on the brakes but it did not function, and the airbags did not deploy after the car hit the road barrier, he claimed.

Perodua said then that a full diagnostic test was made on the vehicle (an Axia E MT) following the accident, and results revealed steering, braking and airbag systems that were functioning normally. The company said that it has yet to receive any complaint of this nature after selling over 200,000 units of the Axia since September 2014.

The Rawang-based carmaker also pointed out that all four tyres of the crashed Axia were bald, with three of them having just 1 mm of tread depth left. The reason the airbags did not deploy in this case could be because of the weak frontal impact or that the crash impact has been absorbed by the car’s structure.

Gempar! Malaysia antara negara tertinggi kemalangan di dunia

Abdul Aziz Kaprawi

'The Rock' for president?

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

LOS ANGELES - Smell what’s cooking in 2020? Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has said he’s considering running for president one day.

The actor, who has previously hinted at a future in politics, was asked if he might be a future candidate for the White House after former reality star Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the presidential election on Tuesday, November 8.

“I wouldn’t rule it out,” the former pro wrestler told Vanity Fair while promoting his new animated movie Moana in Los Angeles on Sunday.

“It would be a great opportunity to help people, so it’s possible. This past election shows that anything can happen,” he added.

Johnson, who has been busy filming the Jumanji remake in Hawaii, previously addressed speculation he’s considering a career change into politics.

“I can’t deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring. And beyond that, it would be an opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives on a global scale,” the 44 year old said.

If he threw his hat into the ring, the former WWE superstar would be following in the footsteps of other Hollywood and wrestling stars who have successfully run for public office namely Terminator actor Arnold Schwarzenegger who served as California’s Republican governor.

Toyota Camry updated for 2016 - price starts RM152,900

The Toyota Camry has been given a set of updates for 2016, and UMW Toyota Motor has announced that the order books have opened for the latest iteration of the XV50. Four variants are available for this outing, with the locally-assembled range starting as before with the 2.0E. The 2.0G, meanwhile, is now called the 2.0GX, and the 2.5 Hybrid is now available in two versions, a base Premium and a range-topping Luxury.

The refresh was introduced here last year, so as you’d expect, no changes to the running gear or outputs. To recap, the 6AR-FSE 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with VVT-iW and D-4S direct and port injection found in the 2.0E and 2.0G offers 167 PS at 6,500 rpm and 199 Nm at 4,600 rpm, which was 17 PS and nine Nm more than pre-facelift. The mill – which is capable of switching between Otto (for power) and Atkinson (for efficiency) cycles – is paired with a six-speed Super ECT gearbox.

Likewise that on the 2.5 Hybrid. The 2AR-FXE 2.5 litre VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine (160 PS at 5,700 rpm and 213 Nm at 4,500 rpm), working together with a 143 PS/270 Nm electric motor juiced by a nickel-metal hydride battery, is good for a total system output of 205 PS, with drive provided via an e-CVT transmission.

As comprehensive as the 2015 revision was, the 2016 update introduces yet more kit, and important ones in terms of safety equipment available for the car. Like will be seen on the upcoming Corolla facelift, the update for the Camry introduces seven airbags (including a driver’s knee bag), VSC, traction control, hill start assist and emergency stop signal into the equation across the entire model range.

Previously, the 2.0E came with two airbags and didn’t feature VSC and the rest of the items listed above, and though the 2.0GX had all these, it still made do with only two airbags, so the latest specification is a major bump up on the safety front. When announced last year, the 2.5 Hybrid came equipped with all these, along with a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert; no change to that here.

Standard equipment is as seen on the facelift, the entire model range coming with auto dual-zone climate control with rear air vents, keyless entry/start, rear-seat Isofix and body-coloured front and rear parking sensors, among other things.

The new X suffix on the 2.0GX brings about a few additions. The 16-inch alloys seen on the 2.0G have been replaced with 17-inch units (with 215/55 profile rubbers), and the model now features a two-DIN, seven-inch touchscreen head unit equipped with WiFi capability. Unlike the seven-inch system on the Hybrid, there’s no navigation as standard, though a version of the unit with navigation is available as an option. Also on, Qi wireless charging, as seen on the Hybrid.

As for the 2.5 Hybrid, the Premium is essentially a scaled-down version of the Luxury. It rides on 16-inch alloys and 215/60 tyres (17s and 215/55 on the Luxury) and comes equipped with a standard tuner/CD player audio system (a seven-inch touchscreen is available as optional kit) and a basic day/night rear-view mirror (electro-chromic on Luxury). It also loses the wireless charging, nanoe ioniser and Blind Spot monitor seen in the Luxury.

Finally, pricing. The 2.0E is priced at RM152,900 (a RM2k decrease from the current RM154,900 pricing), while the 2.0GX goes for RM159,900, down from the RM164,900 now (and essentially back to the launch price in 2015), despite gaining extra equipment.

The 2.5 Hybrid Premium, meanwhile, goes for RM164,900, while the 2.5 Hybrid Luxury is priced at RM174,900, the latter identical to the 2015 2.5 Hybrid variant when it was introduced last year. All prices are on-the-road, including insurance and GST.

New Proton Ertiga MPV details revealed

Here it is, the Proton Ertiga. In what has been a very busy year for Proton, this is the fourth and final product launch for the national carmaker after the Perdana, Persona and Sagaintroductions in June, August and September respectively.

The Ertiga name was confirmed earlier today in a teaser video by Proton, which means that not only is the MPV a straightforward rebadge of the Suzuki Ertiga (just like the Mazda VX-1), even the donor car’s name has been maintained. By the way, this will be the first ever Proton, whether homegrown or based on something else – to not have an original name. A Proton Ertiga R3 anyone?

The Ertiga is a rebadged Suzuki Ertiga facelift, with knock down kits coming from Suzuki in Indonesia. Our ASEAN neighbour is the regional production hub for this model – Suzuki exports the Ertiga as a CBU model to the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to the tune of 800 to 1,000 units per month, but this is its first CKD export order. The Japanese company expects orders of around 1,500 units per month from Proton, to be assembled in the under-utilised Tanjung Malim plant.

The Ertiga is a three-row MPV for emerging markets. It first surfaced in India – a market where Maruti Suzuki is the market leader – back in 2012, before going on sale in MPV-dominated Indonesia. The facelifted version made its debut at last year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2015 show, sporting minor exterior and interior revisions and an unchanged powertrain.

The Ertiga is a three-row MPV that is capable of seating seven. However, in Malaysia it’s classified as a six-seater. This is because the donor Suzuki comes with a lap belt for the middle seat in the middle row, and lap belts (as opposed to the more protective three-point belt) aren’t good enough for Malaysian regulations. There, a six-seater three-row MPV in 2-2-2 formation.

Sitting on a stretched Suzuki Swift platform, the Ertiga measures 4,265 mm long, 1,695 mm wide and 1,685 mm tall, with a wheelbase length of 2,740 mm. Compared to the MPV that it’s brought in to rival – the Perodua Alza – the Ertiga is 5 mm shorter but has a roofline that’s 65 mm higher. The Alza’s 2,750 mm wheelbase is 10 mm longer.

The Exora, which will continue to be sold, is significantly larger – 327 mm longer 114 mm wider and 6 mm taller – which means that there’s a place for both in the family. And of course, the homegrown effort is a seven-seater. Proton is now calling the Exora a C-segment MPV and the Ertiga a B-segment MPV.

The chassis is par for the course – MacPherson struts for front suspension, a torsion beam at the back, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes and a 45-litre fuel tank. The EPS electric steering’s turning radius is 5.2 metres. It might also be worth noting the Ertiga’s 185 mm ground clearance, which is pretty high – 30 mm higher than both the Alza and Exora, and just 15 mm short of the gangly Avanza.

Moving under the hood, we have a 1.4 litre engine with 92 PS at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm at 4,000 rpm. This is the familiar K14B unit with DOHC, VVT, timing chain and drive-by-wire throttle. It’s mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or an Aisin-sourced four-speed torque converter automatic. Zero to 100 km/h is completed in 11.8 seconds for the MT and 13.9 seconds for the AT. Proton quotes fuel consumption at a constant 90 km/h cruise, and it’s 5.7 l/100 km for the MT and 6.0 l/100 km for AT – good enough for EEV certification, the brand’s first.

Three variants will be available – Executive MT, Executive AT and the top Executive Plus AT. As standard, the Ertiga comes with halogen headlamps (reflector type), front and rear foglamps, electrically-adjustable side mirrors, rear parking sensors (two eyes), rear wiper, 15-inch wheels with 185/65 GT Radial Champiro tyres and a space-saver spare tyre. Four colours are on the plate – Ruby Red (the Perdana’s hero colour), Carnelian Brown (new on the Persona), Metal Grey (Saga) and Cotton White.

Inside the MPV’s two-tone (light grey and beige seats) cabin, you’ll find middle row seats that are slidable within a 240 mm range. They are also 60:40 split-folding, with one-touch access to the third row, which split folds 50:50.

There’s also an integrated CD/USB player with four speakers, ceiling-mounted rear air-con (with cooling coil and blower control) and 12V power sockets (one in front, one for the middle row). The Ertiga is a four-star ASEAN NCAP car and it comes with two front airbags, side impact beams, ABS with EBD and two Isofix anchors. No electronic stability control to be found, though, just like the original Suzuki.

Move up to the Executive Plus AT, and Proton throws in chrome trim for the front foglamp housing, power foldable side mirrors, LED turn signals on the side mirrors, extra under bonnet insulation, audio controls on the steering wheel, two dashboard tweeters (to make it six speakers in total), a height adjuster for the driver’s seat, chrome inside door handles and pockets in the back of both front seats.

Abang Kucing cabar Jamal bertinju

Jamal
