Piala AFF Suzuki 2014

British royal couple arrives in New York

The royal couple's trip will see William and Kate, both 32, mix diplomacy with supporting their favorite causes and promoting British business interests. - AP Photo/New York Post, Chad Rachman, Pool

NEW YORK: Crowds of jubilant royal watchers cheered as Britain's Prince William and his pregnant wife Kate arrived in New York on Sunday, kicking off a three-day trip to the East Coast.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's motorcade pulled up outside the Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side around 5:45 pm (2245 GMT), and the couple smiled broadly before heading into the building.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived in NYC!" the British consulate in New York tweeted, along with a picture of the beaming pair.

Kate, who is due to give birth to the couple's second baby in April, was wearing a purple maternity coat. Their first-born son George is not coming on the visit.

The royal couple's trip will see William and Kate, both 32, mix diplomacy with supporting their favorite causes and promoting British business interests.

It is their first trip to the United States together since a brief visit to the Los Angeles region in 2011 shortly after their wedding. It also marks their second outside the Commonwealth family of nations.

William is scheduled to meet US President Barack Obama in the White House on Monday for talks about illegal wildlife trading, an issue close to the prince's heart.

Second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, William is now doing more of the long-haul work for the British monarchy as Queen Elizabeth II approaches her nineties.

"It's a significant trip which is trying to establish William further in a diplomatic, statesmanlike role," Robert Jobson, author of "The New Royal Family," told AFP.

Rather than visiting on behalf of Queen Elizabeth or touring one of her realms, this time they will be expressly visiting on behalf of the British government.

Obama meeting a coup

The visit will undoubtedly revive memories of the 1985 trip made by William's parents, Charles and Diana, when the princess, wearing a dazzling gown, danced with US president Ronald Reagan and Hollywood star John Travolta.

And the royal couple is staying at the same New York hotel -- The Carlyle, known for hosting global powerplayers over the years -- that Diana also visited.

After the meeting with Obama, William will address the World Bank on illegal wildlife trading.

"It is quite a coup for William that he has been invited to the White House by Obama because this is his topic, something he has specifically raised awareness about," royal biographer Penny Junor said.

It marks the first time either William or Kate have been to New York or Washington.

The couple will attend their first NBA basketball game Monday, the league said, when they will see LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Brooklyn Nets.

On Tuesday, they will tour the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York and will later attend a fundraiser for the University of St Andrews where they met.

British Ambassador Peter Westmacott told CBS News that he was confident the protests that have taken place over several nights in New York demanding justice for black men killed by white police officers would not overshadow the visit.

"We obviously hope not because this is a visit to which we attach a great deal of importance," he said.

Asia on horizon

William, who is training to become an air ambulance pilot in his day job, is also preparing for a trip to Japan and China in late February-early March, without Kate ahead of her due date.

That visit is being viewed in Britain as an attempt to improve top-level diplomatic relations with Beijing.

"In terms of foreign travel, I would guess that he and his younger brother Prince Harry would be the ones that do it in future because they have got huge appeal," Junor said.

Nicole Kidman admits 'toughest year' after father's death

KIDMAN: You know, I will look back at this year as one of the toughest years our family's ever gone through. - File pic

SYDNEY: Australian film star Nicole Kidman has described 2014 as her toughest ever year, saying the sudden death of her father in Singapore had left her family in "so much pain".

In Sydney for the premiere of her new movie "Paddington", the Oscar winner said her close-knit family were "hunkering down for Christmas" without her father Antony Kidman.

"You know, I will look back at this year as one of the toughest years our family's ever gone through -- I mean, the toughest ever," she told Sydney's Daily Telegraph Monday.

Antony Kidman, a doctor, died in Singapore in September from a heart attack as he was visiting daughter Antonia and her family.

"I talk about it because I like to keep him alive, in a way," his famous older daughter said. "Even though you talk about it, you're still in so much pain so, yeah, as a family we're still in a lot of pain.

"As any family knows when you've had a huge loss, it makes you tighter, you have to also protect each other," she added.

Kidman has also had a bumpy year on-screen, with the thriller "Before I Go to Sleep" last month her worst ever large scale opening, taking just over US$2 million after a wide release across 1,935 theatres.

In that movie, Kidman plays a woman suffering from chronic amnesia who wakes up every morning with no recollection of her life from her early 20s onwards.

Its weak opening marked another disappointing flop for Kidman after "Grace of Monaco," which was booed at the Cannes festival earlier this year and savaged by critics.

Kidman said she chose to make the movie "Paddington" because she wanted something her daughters with singer Keith Urban -- Sunday, six, and Faith, three -- could enjoy.

Mazda SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel coming to Malaysia 2016

Mazda’s new SkyActiv-D 1.5 litre clean diesel engine, first introduced in the latest Mazda 2, is set to make its debut in the Malaysian market pretty soon, if a recent report from The Star is to be believed.

According to the English language daily, Berjaya Auto executive director and CEO Datuk Seri Ben Yeoh said that the small-capacity oil burner will arrive on our shores as early as 2016. The mill will be assembled in Thailand at Mazda’s new engine plant in Chonburi starting from the fourth quarter of next year, so it looks like exports will begin soon after.

The Euro 6-compliant diesel engine, which features a variable turbine geometry turbocharger, makes 105 PS at 4,000 rpm and a respectable 250 Nm from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm. More impressive is the inclusion of homogeneous lean burning and the extremely low compression ratio of 14.8:1, which Mazda claims help it deliver low levels of harmful NOx emissions without resorting to expensive aftertreatments.

In certain markets, the 1.5 litre SkyActiv-D is available on the Mazda 2 (making it Thailand’s first diesel-powered Eco Car) as well as the Mazda CX-3 B-segment crossover. With the latter also set to arrive in Malaysia around the same time as the engine, could this mean that the car will be offered with a diesel option from launch?

Who is Joe Biden to take the moral high ground?

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there is no justice in the United States.

The United States assumes that it is the greatest democracy in the world and is in a position to tell others what is right and what is wrong and what they should do and what they should not do. On this assumption Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States chastised Malaysia for retaining the Sedition Act and the trial of Anwar Ibrahim.

Who is Joe Biden to take the moral high ground?

Being the Vice President of a country that detains people without trial for more than a decade, torturing them while in detention; a country where torture is legal, a country which has no qualms about invading other countries, killing millions of innocent people, destroying towns and villages, leaving them without electricity, water supply and sewerage systems; what right has Biden to condemn the retaining of a law to prevent racial conflicts and violence in Malaysia.

Today the United States is engaged in assassinating people opposed to America. Malaysia used to detain people without trial. But the United States passes death sentences without trial, without the knowledge of the victims even. Then drones are sent to kill the designated victims. The judgements and death sentence are not made in a court of law. They are made by officials. These people appoint themselves as judges, prosecutors and executioners. This is justice as practiced by America.

And America dares to claim that it is doing all these to protect democracy. What democracy is there for the innocent people killed, wounded and maimed for life? Wherever the United States goes there would be deaths and destructions.

In the United States itself there is no justice. Within a short space of time police shot and strangled three blacks. The grand jury then says that there is no case for the police killers to answer.

Arrogantly one white American official says the victims were killed because they resisted arrest. I saw the picture of a black raising up both hands. Is it how Americans resist arrest. The black teenager had no arms but was shot dead. A 12 year old boy had a toy gun. He too was shot dead.

Then of course there is this condemnation of the legal action taken against America’s candidate for Prime Ministership of Malaysia. The Malaysian courts have been extra lenient, taking more than five years, listening to appeals after appeals with nearly 30 postponements. In America a grand jury (whatever that may mean) decide not to indict and the criminal is free. Where is due process?

America is a land stolen from the Red Indians through genocide. Americans should really bow their heads down in shame forever.

Just don’t go around telling people how to behave and what they should not do. Tell it to your own people, about how Americans prosper through slavery, through discrimination against blacks and Hispanics, about spying on your own people, about your controlled media etc. That is what Joe Biden should do.

AFF-Suzuki Cup: Khairy apologises to Vietnamese fans

'This is clearly not the Malaysian way,' says Khairy. -Filepic

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has apologised to the Vietnamese football fans for the unruly behaviour of some Malaysian fans who turned up at the AFF-Suzuki Cup semi-final fixture between Malaysia and Vietnam last night.

In a press statement today, Khairy said he had also called the Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Pham Cao Phong and gave his assurance that the matter will be investigated by the police.

He also urged Malaysian fans to take the necessary safety precautions during the second leg of the semi-final match between the two countries which will take place in Hanoi on Dec 11.

Read his full statement here:

I condemn in the strongest terms, the violence which took place at the AFF-Suzuki Cup semi-final fixture between Malaysia and Vietnam at the Shah Alam Stadium last night. Although only a small segment of Malaysian fans turned unruly, their violent conduct directed at visiting Vietnamese fans was completely unacceptable and has tarnished Malaysia’s reputation.

This is clearly not the Malaysian way. Violence is not and was never part of our culture. The vast majority of Malaysian fans were respectful, courteous and hospitable last night, and I am saddened that the football match was marred by the actions of a small number of hooligans

I would like to apologise to the Vietnamese fans for the behaviour of these unruly fans, whose actions have been condemned by many Malaysians.

I have spoken to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police and have asked the police for cooperation in expediting the investigations. Given that the photos of the assailants have been widely circulated on social media, I hope that the police will swiftly bring those responsible to justice.

I also called the Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Pham Cao Phong, and I reiterated my apologies to the Vietnamese fans for what transpired last night. I assured him that the police will be proactive and swift in their investigations.

At the same time, I requested from the Ambassador safe passage for our fans who will be travelling to Hanoi for the second leg of the Malaysia-Vietnam match on Dec 11. He assured me that the safety of Malaysian fans travelling to Hanoi will be looked after by Vietnamese authorities.

In light of this incident, I urge Malaysian fans travelling to Hanoi to take all necessary safety precautions. While we appreciate the safety assurance given by the Ambassador, tensions are still running high. I hope that all Malaysian travellers will be not only be careful, but more importantly, be responsible and respectful.

Sports is meant to unify and bring people together. Likewise for the AFF-Suzuki Cup, it is meant to unite the Southeast Asian community in the spirit of friendly competition. Not only am I disheartened by the mindless acts of violence last night, I am deeply disappointed that we failed to show the Southeast Asian community that we can lead by example through our sportsmanship on and off the field.

Ugandan maid pleads guilty to baby torture

Tumuhiirwe was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Wednesday.

KAMPALA: A Ugandan maid pleaded guilty Monday to torture of a baby, a case that has shocked the country after a video of her abusing the child was made public.

The 22-year old maid, Jolly Tumuhiirwe, faces up to 15 years in prison for the crime.

Worried parents, who installed a CCTV camera when they were at work, were shocked to see they had filmed the maid pushing the 18-month-old baby girl to the floor.

She then kicked the child's face and stomach before putting her entire weight on the girl's back, and then dragged her out the room apparently unconscious. The baby was left bruised and shaken by the abuse.

The disturbing video has been seen or shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media.

After her arrest, police said she would be charged for attempted murder, but in court Monday faced torture charges alone.

State prosecutor Joyce Tushabe said the maid, who had no lawyer, "was remorseful" in court.

"She said she was sorry for the act," Tushabe said. "She asked for forgiveness from the parents of the child, the nation, and those she said were affected by her acts."

Tumuhiirwe was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Singaporean jailed for hacking Prime Minister's office website

Singapore strictly regulates the traditional media, but insists the licensing rules enacted in June 2013 do not impinge on Internet freedom.

SINGAPORE: A court on Monday jailed a 28-year-old Singaporean for two months for defacing the prime minister's office website during a rash of cyber attacks in the city-state last year.

Mohammad Azhar bin Tahir, who is unemployed, had pleaded guilty to "unauthorised modification" of a section of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's official website on November 7, 2013, causing it to display mocking messages and pictures from international hacker group Anonymous.

The hacking was carried out a day before the website of the Istana, the official residence of President Tony Tan, was defaced in a similar manner.

A court spokeswoman told AFP that Mohammad Azhar was sentenced on Monday to two months in jail for defacing the prime minister's office website, and a further four months for other unrelated charges under Singapore's Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act.

Court documents said Azhar had injected a computer code into the server of Lee's website, www.pmo.gov.sg, causing a section of it to be compromised.

The hacked section, which was removed in the early hours of November 8, showed the message "ANONYMOUS SG WAS HERE BIATCH".

"It's great to be Singaporean today," read another headline next to Anonymous's trademark Guy Fawkes mask, a symbol of anti-establishment defiance worldwide.

Earlier this year a 43-year-old Singaporean man was fined Sg$8,000 ($6,400) for the Istana incident, while his 18-year-old accomplice was ordered to have his movements restricted for a year.

Separately, Singaporean James Raj Arokiasamy, 35, is facing 162 criminal charges for various computer misuse offences, including illegally accessing the parliamentary district website of premier Lee and a reporter's blog on The Straits Times's website.

The rash of attacks late last year took place after a self-proclaimed spokesperson for international hacker group Anonymous appeared in a video to demand the scrapping of a law requiring local news websites to obtain annual licences.

Singapore strictly regulates the traditional media, but insists the licensing rules enacted in June 2013 do not impinge on Internet freedom.

None of the hackers convicted or facing trial have commented on any ties with Anonymous.

Singapore in August announced new measures to boost cyber-security following the attack on government websites.

It is upgrading its Cyber-Watch Centre, allowing it to track malicious activities and respond swiftly to security threats.

Mahathir bidas tweet Joe Biden

Mahathir mengkritik Joe Biden dalam tulisan blog terbaharunya. -Gambar fail
