Cristiano Ronaldo scores five as Real Madrid destroy Granada

Cristiano Ronaldo stole a march on Lionel Messi in the race for the Pichichi by scoring five - including an eight-minute hat-trick - in an incredible 9-1 rout of Granada.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had to wait until the 25th minute to take the lead through Gareth Bale, but the opener only opened the floodgates as Ronaldo scored a hat-trick before half-time to give Real a 4-0 lead.

And Los Blancos continued with such gusto after the break, with Ronaldo adding another and Karim Benzema bagging a double saw them seven to the good with 56 on the clock.

Double figures looked to be on the cards, as La Liga’s second-bottom side crumbled all over the pitch, but a number of changes saw the flow of the contest stemmed.

Granada grabbed a consolation goal before a Diego Mainz own goal and another Ronaldo goal gave Real Madrid a sensational 9-1 win - the biggest margin of victory in La Liga this season.

'Serang Najib, Tun M seperti diserang 'histeria''

  • Mustapha Yaakub
  • Datuk Mustapha Yaakub

Arsenal run amok against Liverpool to move up to second

PA Photos. Premier League, Emirates Stadium: Arsenal 4 (Bellerin 37', Ozil 40', Sanchez 45', Giroud 90'+1) Liverpool 1 (Henderson 76' pen)

Arsenal blitzed Liverpool in eight dramatic minutes en route to a 4-1 win in the Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

The game was effectively over as a contest at half-time after a flurry of Arsenal goals just before the break.

Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez grabbed the goals in a stunning eight-minute spell before the interval - strikes which broke the visitors' hearts following earlier two misses by the Reds.

Jordan Henderson cut the arrears with a 76th-minute penalty, but Olivier Giroud added gloss to an already polished performance with an injury-time fourth.

Arsenal could have been two up in the opening ten minutes through chances for Sanchez and Santi Cazorla as the Liverpool defence fell to pieces.

Liverpool should have taken the lead soon after, with Raheem Sterling first drawing a good save from David Ospina, then unable to get a foot to a clumsily-overhit pass from Lazar Markovic while free and clear in the box.

Instead, Arsenal opened the scoring on the 37th minute with a beautiful goal from Bellerin, stepping through the back line delicately and curling a shot past Simon Mignolet.

Ozil's magnificent free kick fizzed past Mignolet three minutes later, and Sanchez got the goal his efforts deserved in first-half added time, tipping the ball over the goalkeeper's head.

Bellerin was involved in Liverpool's consolation goal, giving away the penalty that Henderson converted, with a foot in front of Raheem Sterling, but didn't receive the second yellow card that some observers thought he warranted.

Emre Can, however, did, catching substitute Danny Welbeck very late and receiving the second booking in the 84th minute.

Olivier Giroud restored the three-goal advantage in the dying seconds, with a well-taken solo goal, lashed left-footed past Mignolet.

Manchester United up to third after big win over Aston Villa

Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 3 (Herrera 43, 90, Rooney 79) Aston Villa 1 (Benteke 80)

Manchester United sealed a deserved 3-1 win over Aston Villa to move above Manchester City and into third place thanks to a brace from Ander Herrera and a superb Wayne Rooney half-volley.

The home side were extremely dominant in the first-half, with 74% of possession, but had to wait until the 43rd minute for the opener when Herrera sent a half-volley into the far corner after Daley Blind’s cut-back.

Wayne Rooney looked like he had killed the contest with just over ten minutes remaining, controlling a high ball from Angel di Maria with his back towards goal before spinning and volleying into the top left-hand corner with a superb strike.

Moments later Aston Villa had a lifeline, however, as David de Gea allowed a tame Benteke shot to squirm under his body after the ball fell to the Belgian from a corner.

That set up a potentially frantic finish, but Herrera calmed any nerves two minutes into added time, sweeping Juan Mata’s cutback into the net from the edge of the area.
