'‎Nak sembelih mu'

Prince Harry gets airborne and into Australia's Outback

SYDNEY: Prince Harry completes the first two weeks of a stint with the Australian Army on Sunday, training in bush survival skills, spending time on helicopter duties and playing wheelchair Aussie Rules football.

Captain Wales, as he is known in the British Army, is on a month-long attachment with his Australian Army counterparts ahead of retiring from the forces.

He spent the first fortnight in Australia's remote north and west, getting airborne in an Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter Tiger. The prince has flown Apache helicopters for Britain.

"Captain Wales undertook flight simulation training, before heading out with members of the 1st Aviation Regiment on an ARH Tiger reconnaissance flight from Robertson Barracks, Darwin," the Australian Defence Force said.

He also trained in bush survival skills, including how to source food and water, before spending two nights camping out in the remote Kununurra region of Western Australia with the North-West Mobile Force.

Hundreds of well-wishers turned out to see the 30-year-old when he arrived in Canberra on April 6 at the National War Memorial -- his only public appearance -- before reporting for duty at Duntroon Military College.

He delivered a letter to the Australian Defence Force head, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, from Queen Elizabeth II, in which she wrote her grandson would "benefit greatly from spending time with the Australian diggers".

His movements have been off bounds to the media since then.

In an update, the defence force said Captain Wales met elders and children at the Wuggubun indigenous community in Kununurra, around 470 kilometres (290 miles) southwest of Darwin.

Building on his interest in veterans affairs, the prince also joined some of the army's wounded, injured and ill members to play wheelchair Australian Football League.

He is now breaking his embed to travel to Turkey for the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli, marking the centenary since that World War I campaign before returning to units in Perth and Sydney.

Once back in Australia, his mission is expected to include a live-fire exercise.

"Designed to maintain combat readiness, the exercise will include a live fire collaboration between ground and air assets," the defence force said of Exercise Thunder Observer, for which he has been training.

The Australian Army attachment comes after Harry, a graduate from the elite Sandhurst military academy who served twice in Afghanistan, announced his departure from the British Army.

"After a decade of service, moving on from the army has been a really tough decision," he said last month, revealing he will quit in June.

"The experiences I have had over the last 10 years will stay with me for the rest of my life. For that I will always be hugely grateful."

Harry earned a reputation as a wild-child in his early 20s with his party-going high jinks, but has since tried to carve out a more mature role for himself, with his devotion to military service playing a major part.

Iraqis unearth mass graves in city where Islamic State ruled

TIKRIT: Saddam Hussein's former palace complex here is seemingly idyllic, its gardens lined with lush palm trees and bursts of bougainvillea. But at the heart of the verdant compound, diggers are turning over the earth in search of evidence from what could be one of Iraq's worst atrocities in more than a decade.

Iraqi authorities say that the palace complex could contain the remains of hundreds of young soldiers slain by Islamic State militants last June. As many as 1,700 Shiite soldiers from nearby Camp Speicher were killed by jihadists, a massacre seared into the national consciousness.

Since Iraqi government teams started the excavation this month, they have uncovered more than 160 bodies of young men, most of whom had been bound, shot and then buried in mass graves.

For months, relatives have waited for news of their loved ones who went missing at Camp Speicher. Now the bodies exhumed in Tikrit, which are awaiting DNA testing at Baghdad's central morgue, offer some of the first concrete evidence of one of the most grisly crimes committed by a group already known for its shocking brutality. Officials say identification cards found on several of the bodies bear names that match reported victims from Camp Speicher.

"We gave our samples to the morgue, and now we are waiting to hear if they found my brother or not," said Abdullah Mohammed, who saw his younger sibling, Saad, gunned down in a video posted by the Islamic State to social media sites after the massacre. In a telephone interview from his home town in southern Iraq, Abdullah began to cry.

The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group executed hundreds of mostly Shiite recruits last June in what is known as the Speicher massacre, named for the military base near which they were captured. Thirteen grave sites have been found -- 10 in the palace complex and three outside, Haider Majid, an employee of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office working on the Speicher issue, said. AFP PHOTO / AHMAD AL-RUBAYE)

"We've seen a lot of bodies," he said. "But we don't know if they are him. The government hasn't told us anything."

Iraqi forces backed by Shiite militias wrested Tikrit back from the Islamic State last month, after a weeks-long offensive supported by U.S.-led airstrikes. The jihadists had seized the city — which is Hussein's home town — last June. In the chaos of the assault, thousands of recruits from Camp Speicher donned civilian clothes and slipped away from the base in the hope they could escape.

But they soon encountered well-armed Sunni militants from the Islamic State, who separated the recruits by sect and hauled the Shiite solders off to the vast complex of riverside villas built by Hussein before he was overthrown in the 2003 U.S. invasion.

The jihadist gunmen spent the next three days in an industrial-scale killing spree that the United Nations says probably amounts to a war crime. The militants boasted about the bloodbath, saying they killed 1,700 soldiers, and circulated videos and photographs of the executions online. Later, through satellite imagery, New York-based Human Rights Watch estimated that as many as 770 people had been killed at various sites at the palaces on June 12 and June 13 last year.

Iraqi officials, even months after the assault, admitted that they did not know exactly what happened to the cadets.

Now, using shovels and scalpels, and taking short breaks for bread and sweet tea, dozens of government workers are toiling 12-hour days in the heat to get justice for these Iraqis.

Inside the palace complex, there are 10 locations officials have identified as possible mass gravesites. There are an additional three that they say they still need to test inside the city. The diggers, in bright blue scrubs and surgical masks to block the stench, have made gruesome discoveries: legs without torsos, tufts of hair and crumbled bones they collect in clear plastic bags.

On a recent afternoon, one worker who was digging deep inside a mound of earth and rocks had just found parts of what he believed was the same body. He struggled to shove a fibula — or calf bone — back into a tattered pant leg to keep what was left of the corpse intact. Another man with a mask and a clipboard walked in a circle around the newly discovered remains, methodically recording the morbid scene. On the gentle slope of dirt next to him, a severed pair of legs rested.

"This area now is the hardest type of mass grave to dig," said another Iraqi working at the scene, soil expert Ghanem Abdel Karim. The corpses "are buried at random, and they are under rocks and thick soil. We must make sure we are only digging up one body at a time, and make sure pieces of one body don't end up in the bag of another."

Karim, who works for Iraq's human rights ministry, also helped uncover the mass graves left behind by Hussein's brutal regime. He and his team now search the palace grounds for dirt mounds and bullet shells, indications of possible burial places.

According to survivor testimony and confessions from militants arrested in the city, groups of scores of soldiers were killed and buried in different spots, officials said. Other cadets were shot and pushed into the Tigris River — whose banks in Tikrit are still stained with blood. Some of the bodies later floated downstream, where they were recovered.

At one site at the palace complex, workers exhumed 50 bodies that had been stacked on top of one another and then covered in dirt, officials said. Exhumations are now taking place at a second location: a dry riverbed that cuts through the palace compound.

Most of the victims have been found face-down, their hands tied and bullet holes in their heads, said Zaid Ali, the director of Baghdad's central morgue. He is sleeping at the palaces so he can rise each morning and resume supervision of the digging.

Workers have found bodies with identification cards, cellphones and small bills. One corpse was found with a tiny book of prayers.

But with decrepit forensic equipment — and with gunfire and explosions echoing from clashes nearby — the workers say the recovery of the bodies is a painstaking task that could take weeks or even months to complete.

"It's not secure; it's a war zone," Ali said of Tikrit, where Iraqi security forces are still battling the jihadists in isolated areas. "So this makes the work much more difficult."

"This is a historical moment," Mohammed al-Timimi, an official from the Iraqi prime minister's office, told the workers at the site. "There is no work more honorable than the work you are doing now."

'Mysterious' disease kills 18 in Nigeria

The disease, whose symptoms include headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, killed the victims within a day of falling ill, he said.

LAGOS: A "mysterious" disease that kills patients within 24 hours has claimed at least 18 lives in a southeastern Nigerian town, the government said Saturday.

"Twenty-three people (were affected) and 18 deaths were recorded," the Ondo state health commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, told AFP.

The government spokesman for the state, Kayode Akinmade, earlier gave a toll of 17 dead.

"Seventeen people have died of the mysterious disease since it broke out early this week in Ode-Irele town," Akinmade told AFP by telephone.

The disease, whose symptoms include headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, killed the victims within a day of falling ill, he said.

Laboratory tests have so far ruled out Ebola or any other virus, Akinmade said.

The World Health Organization meanwhile said it had information on 14 cases with at least 12 dead.

"Common symptoms were sudden blurred vision, headache, loss of consciousness followed by death, occurring within 24 hours," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told AFP by email, adding that an investigation was ongoing.

Another WHO spokesman, Gregory Hartl, told AFP that according to a preliminary report, all those affected began showing symptoms between April 13 and 15.

Akinmade said health officials and experts from the government and aid agencies, as well as WHO epidemiologists, had arrived in Ode-Irele to search for answers.

The state's health commissioner, Adeyanju, told AFP that he and his officials had gone on a "field visit with the WHO, UNICEF, NCDC (Nigerian Centre for Disease Control)".

"This was basically a case search to unravel the cause (of the disease)," he said in a text message.

The WHO's Jasarevic said blood and urine samples had been taken from two victims and cerebrospinal fluid from another.

"All samples have been sent to Lagos University Teaching Hospital this morning, and results are still pending. Investigations are still ongoing," he said.

Tun M tidak berjuang bersendirian, kata Muhyiddin

Muhyiddin Yassin.

Lokman mengulas kenyataan Dr Mahathir mengenai kemaafannya kepada Najib atas kegagalan projek jambatan bengkok, sebaliknya mahu Najib menjawab isu berhubung kehilangan wang akaun 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Lawak Ke Der gamatkan IB

Eden Hazard drives Chelsea closer to title against Manchester United

April 19, 2015: Premier League, Stamford Bridge - Chelsea 1 (Hazard 38’) Manchester United 0

Eden Hazard gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, and probably the Premier League title.

United dominated in possession and territory for much of the first half but created almost nothing with it. Chelsea were happy to stand off their opponents, and Kurt Zouma’s marking job on Marouane Fellaini meant that Manchester United were not able to open up sides down the left or with the high ball like they had most of their recent rivals.

Wayne Rooney went closest for United early on when he clipped a shot just wide of the near post when he had time to do better, but it was Chelsea who scored the only goal of the half. Chris Smalling fired in a pass to Radamel Falcao who was tackled firmly by John Terry. The ball was swiftly worked to Hazard down the left of the box and he finished calmly past David de Gea.

In the second half, chances were again at a premium as Chelsea sat back and United struggled to create, but the hosts almost doubled their lead when Hazard hit the bar, and Falcao sliced a shot high.

Ander Herrera tried to win a penalty with a dive in the last few seconds, but was rightly turned down.

Lionel Messi's 400th goal boosts Barca title bid in Valencia win

La Liga, Camp Nou - Barcelona 2 (Suarez 1 Messi 90+4) Valencia 0

Barcelona's Lionel Messi hit his 400th career goal for the La Liga leaders deep into stoppage time to seal a 2-0 win over Valencia.

It took Luis Suarez just 54 seconds to break the deadlock as he completed a great team counter-attack, latching onto Messi’s pass before slotting the ball past Diego Alves.

Valencia missed a golden chance to equalise in the 10th minute when Dani Parejo's penalty was saved by Claudio Bravo after Gerard Pique had barged into the back of Rodrigo Moreno.

The visitors dominated the remainder of the first-half but couldn’t find a leveller. Paco Alcacer narrowly missed the goal on 19 minutes before striking the post just past the half-hour mark.

Barcelona held on to the break and emerged the stronger side from the restart. They went close to doubling their lead on 63 minutes when Messi’s free-kick effort hit the woodwork.

Pedro saw a late effort saved as Barca looked to put added gloss on an already polished performance but Messi scored in stoppage time to ensure Barca moved five points at the top of the table.

Samsung removes logo on smartphones in Japan

Samsung provided no reason why it kept the logo off in Japan.

SEOUL: Samsung has removed its corporate logo from its new smartphones sold in Japan, a company spokeswoman confirmed Saturday.

The name Samsung is missing on both the Galaxy S6 and its curved-edge variant, the Galaxy S6 Edge.

These models are presented as Docomo Galaxy and au Galaxy, carrying the names of its associated Japanese telecom service providers.

Samsung provided no reason why it kept the logo off in Japan.

A leading smartphone maker globally, Samsung has however been struggling in the Japanese market, where archrival Apple is dominant, followed by key Japanese makers such as Sony, Sharp and Fujitsu.

The firm rolled out its new smartphone in South Korea last week.

Samsung, labouring under the burden of successive quarters of plunging profits and booming sales of Apple's iPhone 6, is hoping that new phone will reverse the company's fortunes.

IS claims responsibility for deadly Afghan bombing

A person purporting to be an IS spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack in a call to AFP and in an online posting, although the claims could not be immediately verified.

KABUL: The Islamic State (IS) group claimed to have carried out a deadly suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan Saturday that killed at least 33 people and injured more than 100, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said, in what, if verified, would be the first major attack claimed by the jihadist group in the country.

"Who claimed responsibility for horrific attack in Nangarhar today? The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the attack, Daesh (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack," President Ghani said on a visit to northeastern Badakhshan province.

A person purporting to be an IS spokesman said in a call to AFP that the group claimed responsibility for the bombing outside a bank in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad.

An online posting allegedly from the group made the same claim, which could not be immediately verified.

"Thirty-three dead bodies and more than 100 wounded were brought to the hospital," Dr Najeebullah Kamawal, head of the provincial hospital, told AFP.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a provincial government spokesman, confirmed the attack -- the deadliest since November.

"The explosion happened outside the bank when government employees and civilians were collecting their monthly salaries," he told AFP.

The UN gave a higher toll, saying 35 people had been killed.

President Ghani strongly condemned the attack, which saw children among those killed, his office said in a statement.

"Carrying out terrorist attacks in cities and public places are the most cowardly acts of terror by terrorists targeting innocent civilians," President Ghani said.

The scene of the attack showed the gruesome scale of the carnage with people lying in pools of blood and body parts scattered across the ground.

The bombing comes as Afghanistan braces for what is expected to be a bloody push by the Taliban at the start of the fighting season.

However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied responsibility.

The militants have stepped up attacks on government and foreign targets since Washington backpedalled on plans to shrink the US force in Afghanistan this year by nearly half.

The Taliban have seen defections to IS in recent months, with some insurgents voicing their disaffection with their one-eyed supreme leader Mullah Omar, who has not been seen since the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

The Afghan government has also raised the ominous prospect of IS making inroads into the country, though the group that has captured swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq has never formally acknowledged having a presence in Afghanistan.

Gender segregation at live shows: "why only now?" - Jennifer Thompson

The second edition of the guideline was released by Jakim last week after being approved by the 107th National Fatwa Committee Conference recently.

KUALA LUMPUR: “We have not done it before, so why should we do it now?”

Local concert organiser, Jennifer Thompson raised the question as a response to a set of guidelines by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for artistes and entertainers to perform in the country.

The veteran industry player stressed such ruling should be extensively discussed with the responsible quarters first before it being implemented.

“We need to place sufficient and coherent thoughts before its implementation. There should be an open discussion especially when we live in an open multi-cultural and multi-religious society,” she said when contacted by Astro AWANI Saturday.

The second edition of the guideline was released by Jakim last week after being approved by the 107th National Fatwa Committee Conference in February.

Part of the rules includes the segregation of male and female audiences and performers at 'live shows' held in the country.

“We need to place sufficient and coherent thoughts before its implementation ”- Jennifer

Jakim also stressed that music and lyrics should not boast any elements of “worships” which are considered sacred to believers of other religions.

Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) when contacted said a meeting with take place to discuss the new guideline pertaining to the gender segregation.

President Norman Abdul Halim said the meeting will by organised by RIM and involve other music associations.

“The meeting will discuss the Jakim guideline where we will decide on the next course of action,” said Norman.

The President and Group Chief Executive Officer of KRU Records, however refused to issue a personal stance on the matter citing that the body responsible for giving out licences to stage concerts in Malaysia is the Central Agency for the Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists (Puspal).

“We will refer to PUSPAL to ensure the new guideline does not breach the current rules,” he said.

The guideline can be downloaded on Jakim’s website. The incident involving a K-pop group and a group of fanatic female fans during a KL concert in January have drawn brickbats from religious bodies.

The fans – who donned the headscarves – on stage was heavily criticised as their action were deemed “un-Islamic”.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo launched in Malaysia, RM148k

We’ve heard about it for so long, and seen the car at KLIMS 13, JPJ and testing on the road, so with a big shout of “Finally!” we welcome the Hyundai Veloster Turbo to Malaysia. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) officially revealed the coupe (or hatchback, depends on how you see it) at its new Bangsar showroom this morning.

The Veloster Turbo is making its debut here in mildly facelifted form, along with a non-turbo version. But let’s focus on the more interesting proposition. Our Veloster Turbo is powered by a 1.6 litre T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) four-cylinder engine with 186 PS and 265 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. 0-100 km/h is done in 8.0 seconds while top speed is 214 km/h.

If you’re wondering, 186 PS/265 Nm is also what Europe gets, a slightly lower state of tune than the domestic South Korean market’s 204 PS and 270 Nm.

For the first time, the twin-scroll turbo motor is paired to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Introduced with the facelift, the seven-speed DCT is also found in the Sonata Eco in the USA as well as facelifted versions of the i30 hatchback and i40 sedan/wagon. Steering wheel paddle shifters are provided for manual override.

The 132 PS/158 Nm 1.6 MPI naturally aspirated Veloster carries on with a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox without the shift paddles.

The Malaysian Veloster range will now have three variants – 1.6 Premium, Turbo and Turbo Sport. All Velosters ride on 18-inch alloys with 225/40 rubber, front McPherson struts, rear torsion beam suspension, front ventilated discs and rear discs. The steering system is electric, or motor driven in Hyundai-Kia speak. Six airbags, ABS, ESC and hill start assist are standard across the board.

Also standard for all are LED daytime running lights, panoramic sunroof, Supervision cluster, seven-inch touch screen stereo with AUX/USB/Bluetooth, keyless entry with push start button, Flex Steer, auto air con, auto headlamps, leather seats and reverse camera.

The Turbo model adds on paddle shifters, HID headlamps, ECO guide, powered driver’s seat and “pure leather” seats with grey “Turbo” side trim. Turbo Sport has all of the above, plus racing decals and orange side “Turbo” trim for the seats. Five colours are available, including the factory matte black “Young Gun” in the and Sunflower yellow.

The CBU imported from South Korea range starts from RM129,067 for the Veloster 1.6. The Turbo is priced at RM148,119, and the Turbo Sport RM151,746, all on-the-road with GST, without insurance. As usual with HSDM, buyers get a five-year or 300,000 km warranty.
