Budaya, cara hidup masyarakat Malaysia bakal ditayang kepada dunia

Pengacara Razif Hashim (kanan) dalam dokumentari Time Capsule Malaysia

Housewife shot by police wins suit, awarded RM318,326

Norizan claims a police patrol car had chased the car she was in with her friends at MRR2 in 2009 before shots were fired in their direction.

KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife who was shot by the police in 2009, was awarded RM318,326 in damages by the High Court here Thursday after she won her suit for assault and battery against the police and government.

High Court Judge Datuk Hue Siew Kheng also ordered the defendants to pay RM30,000 as legal costs to Norizan Salleh, 34.

Of the total, Hue awarded RM50,000 to the mother-of-two for the pain and suffering; RM50,000 for assault and battery; RM18,326 for special damages and another RM200,000 for exemplary damages.

She said the amount for exemplary damages was to ensure public bodies did not act unlawfully.

On October 15, 2012, Norizan filed the suit naming Corporal Mohd Firdaus Rosli, attached to the Sentul police station, Sentul police chief, inspector-general of police and the Government of Malaysia as defendants.

In her brief decision, Hue said based on photographs tendered during the trial, 16 spent bullets and bullet holes were found in a car and that there was cogent evidence to sustain repeated and continuous shooting.

In allowing Norizan's claim, the judge said the shooting was not an act of self-defence or acting reasonably or following correct procedure.

"Even the Inspector-General of Police's Standing Orders (IGSO) does not allow this," she said, adding that the IGSO were used when a policeman was in danger of death.

As such, Hue said she found that the defendants had failed to establish defence of reasonable force.

The judge said she noted there was no investigation paper opened for the plaintiff's complaint and no charges were made.

Norizan, in her statement of claim, said a police patrol car, with Mohd Firdaus in it, chased the car she was in with her friends at the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), before shots were fired in their direction.

She claimed the policeman in question kicked and caused her to fall down as she tried to get out of the vehicle.

As a result, Norizan claimed she was treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and the National Heart Institute for 13 days for injuries to her right wrist and gunshot wound in her chest.

She also claimed that due to the incident, she found it difficult to cope with heavy work for long periods of time and eventually, lost her job.

Apart from special damages for unsettled medical bills amounting to RM18,161, she is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages, cost and other relief deemed fit by the court.

8-kilogram tumour removed from Austrian woman

VIENNE: Austrian surgeons removed a tumour weighing some eight kilos (18 pounds), as heavy as a seven-month-old baby, from the stomach of a 75-year-old woman, doctors said Thursday.

"We have never seen such a large and heavy tumour," doctor Gerhard Wolf from the University Hospital Graz (LKH) in southern Austria told a news conference.

The growth, thought to be benign, developed without the woman's knowledge over many years, until she went to the doctor last month complaining of digestion problems and severe pain.

The two-hour operation took place on Friday and the patient is recovering well and will be discharged soon, doctors said. Her enormous tumour is being kept for tests, however. --AFP

Di Maria letter to Madrid fans ‘the reason Falcao moved to United’

There has been much conjecture over Radamel Falcao’s shock move to Manchester United.

Of course, the intrigue to this move was furthered by a tweet sent by Falcao last Saturday apparently confirming his transfer to Real Madrid.

Falcao denied ever sending the offending tweet, claiming that it was a photoshop – a denial that didn’t wash with many.

Regardless of the tweet, it seemed that the Colombian was set for Madrid all summer, so why the sudden change?

Well, El Confidencial, a Spanish broadsheet, and one of the first publications to break the Falcao to United story, have reported that Angel Di Maria may have played a part in the move falling through.

Basically, Di Maria wrote a farewell letter to Real Madrid fans that was published in Spanish daily AS last week.

Amongst the usual outpouring of love for the fans, Di Maria had a few choice words for his former club.

Effectively, he blamed the club for his departure – a selection of the letter can be read below:

“My cycle at Real Madrid has come to an end. Unfortunately today I have to go but I want to make it clear that this was never my desire.

"I went to the World Cup after winning La Decima with the hope of getting some signal from the club but it never came. Many things and many lies were spoken. They always wanted to attribute the idea of leaving on me but that’s not what happened.

"Unfortunately my football isn’t liked by someone. The only thing I asked for is fairness. There are many things I value and many of them have nothing to do with my salary. I hope I can find them at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world and at which I’m hoping to make history."

The Madrid hierarchy were said to be furious with the letter and attributed the blame not only to Di Maria but also his agent, Jorge Mendes, who also represents Madrid players Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao – and, most importantly, Falcao.

El Confidencial intimate that so enraged were Real with Di Maria’s outburst that, as a point of principle, they elected against doing business with Mendes again this summer, which, in turn, opened up the opportunity for Falcao to go to United.

This latest revelation came a day after Falcao’s father confirmed Real Madrid were in a position to sign the striker, but eventually chose not to.

Radamel Garcia did not go into detail why Real elected against the move, but that mystery may now be solved.

Joan Rivers, queen of US 'comediennes,' dies aged 81

NEW YORK: Joan Rivers, the caustic stand-up comic and television host who blazed a trail at a time when comedy was all but off-limits to women, died in hospital in New York on Thursday. She was 81.

The award-winning star had been in Mount Sinai Hospital since August 28, when she reportedly stopped breathing during a medical procedure on her vocal cords at a clinic in New York.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17 pm surrounded by family and close friends," daughter Melissa Rivers said.

Melissa and grandson Cooper had kept a vigil at Rivers' bedside since flying in from Los Angeles as soon as she fell ill.

"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," her daughter added. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

Celebrities, including many younger female comics who followed her onto stages once dominated by men, raced to pay tribute to her rapier wit as their inspiration and to express their condolences.

"There are no words. Bon Voyage Joan," tweeted Oscar-winning actress and comic Whoopi Goldberg.

"A legend, a friend, a mentor, an icon, and wildly funny. One of a kind. RIP," said fellow comic Kathy Griffin, tweeting a picture of herself with Rivers.

"Rest in peace, Joan. We will always love you," said country music star Dolly Parton.

In Los Angeles, a scrum of tourists and journalists gathered at Rivers' star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame where flowers were laid.

Dan Shadbolt, 43, who was visiting from Britain with his wife and three kids, said: "It's terrible news. She was an icon for me."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended heartfelt condolences for the loss of a comedy icon who brought laughter to millions around the world and was a vocal supporter of Israel.

'Can we talk?'

New York State Health Department said it was investigating the circumstances that surrounded her reported cardiac arrest while she was an outpatient at Yorkville Endoscopy Center.

The daughter of a well-off, middle-class Jewish family, Rivers enjoyed a stunningly successful career that lasted decades and worked right up until falling ill last week.

Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky in Brooklyn, she graduated from New York's Barnard College and worked in the fashion industry before starting out in stand-up under the stage name Joan Rivers.

She spared no one her razor-sharp wit and was considered one of the best at delivering a cutting one-liner, and perhaps the most foul-mouthed of a breakthrough generation of US "comediennes".

She took aim at celebrities and public figures, joking about modern America's obsession with image and neuroses.

Her signature catch phrase was "Can we talk?" -- an icebreaker she used before verbally drop-kicking the object of her ridicule.

She told an interviewer that she thought it up while on the stand-up circuit in Las Vegas during the 1980s.

The joke at the time, she said, "was probably about Elizabeth Taylor being fat, and people gasped and I went, 'Can we talk here?'

"What you're really saying is, 'Come on, are we going to talk the truth?'"

Tough and tenacious, she supported herself for years with secretarial work while doing comedy gigs, until she got her big break on the popular "Tonight Show" program in 1965.

Four months after landing a regular gig, she married one of the show's producers Edgar Rosenberg. They had Melissa in 1968.

Rivers used to say that no subject was off-limits in her comedy: not even her husband's suicide in 1987.

"That's how I get through life. God has given us this gift of humor," she told New York Magazine. "Animals don't laugh."

In her 2013 book "I Hate Everyone... Starting With Me," Rivers joked about her own funeral, saying she wanted "a huge showbiz affair" with Meryl Streep "crying in five different accents."

But she also sparked controversy over the years with outspoken remarks on the Middle East and, on one occasion, when the butt of her humor was the survivors of the 9/11 terror attacks.

In later years, Rivers became as well-known for her love of plastic surgery, taken to excess with her exaggerated cheek bones and her preternaturally wrinkle-free face.

She reinvented herself as the host of "Fashion Police," a show that offered running critiques of the red carpet attire worn by the glitterati at the Oscars and other A-list events.

Rivers, who admitted to being a workaholic, said she hoped never to have to cede the stage.

"I'm an addict. It's my drug. I love my work, This is where I'm happiest," she once said.

US media reported that her funeral would be held on Sunday at Temple Emanu-El synagogue in New York. -- AFP

One person commits suicide every 40 seconds according to WHO

Some of the highest rates of suicide are found in central and eastern Europe and in Asia, with 25 percent occurring in rich countries.

GENEVA: One person commits suicide every 40 seconds -- more than all the yearly victims of wars and natural disaster -- with the highest toll among the elderly, the United Nations said Thursday.

In its first report on suicide, the UN's World Health Organisation blamed intense media coverage when celebrities kill themselves for fuelling the problem.

"Suicide is an amazing public health problem. There is one suicide every 40 seconds -- it is a huge number," said Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO's mental health department, at the presentation of the report in Geneva.

"Suicide kills more than conflicts, wars and natural catastrophes," he said. "There are 1.5 million violent deaths every year in the world, of which 800,000 are suicides."

Some of the highest rates of suicide are found in central and eastern Europe and in Asia, with 25 percent occurring in rich countries, the report says.

Men are almost twice as likely as women to take their own lives. Common methods are hanging, gunshots, and especially in rural areas the use of poisonous insecticides.

"Globally, suicide rates are highest in people aged 70 years and over. In some countries, however, the highest rates are found among the young," WHO said. "Notably, suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29 year-olds globally."

Don't glamourise suicide

Alexandra Fleischmann, one of the report's co-authors, said part of the blame lies with the publicity given to suicides by famous people, such as Hollywood actor Robin Williams.

The Oscar-winning star, who had suffered from depression, was found dead at his home on August 1, prompting an outpouring of emotion from the public and widespread media coverage.

Ella Arensman, president of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, said that after news broke of Williams' death she received "five emails of people who had recovered (from a) suicide crisis and saying that they are thinking again about suicide."

"These overwhelming reports can have a contagion effect on vulnerable people," she said, referring also to the "sharp increase" in suicides after German football player Robert Enke killed himself in 2009.

"Suicide should not be glamorised or sensationalised," Fleischmann said, urging news outlets not to mention suicide as the cause of death at the start of reports, but only at the end, "with a mention of where (the reader) can find help."

WHO, which called suicide a major public health problem that must be confronted and stemmed, studied 172 countries to produce the report, which took a decade to research.

It said that in 2012 high-income countries had a slightly higher suicide rate -- 12.7 per 100,000 people, versus 11.2 in low- and middle-income nations.

But given the latter category's far higher population, they accounted for three-quarters of the global total.

Southeast Asia, including North Korea, India, Indonesia and Nepal, made up over a third of the annual figure.

WHO cautioned that suicide figures are often incomplete, with many countries failing to keep proper tallies.

In addition, "there are many suicide attempts for each death," WHO chief Margaret Chan said.

"The impact on families, friends and communities is devastating and far-reaching, even long after persons dear to them have taken their own lives," she added.

Suicide and attempted suicide are considered a crime in 25 countries, mostly in Africa, in South America and in Asia.

The most suicide-prone countries were Guyana (44.2 per 100,000), followed by North and South Korea (38.5 and 28.9 respectively).

Next came Sri Lanka (28.8), Lithuania (28.2), Suriname (27.8), Mozambique (27.4), Nepal and Tanzania (24.9 each), Burundi (23.1), India (21.1), and South Sudan (19.8).

Next were Russia and Uganda (both with 19.5), Hungary (19.1), Japan (18.5), and Belarus (18.3).

The UN agency said its goal is to cut national suicide rates by 10 percent by 2020.

A major challenge, it said, is that suicide victims are often from marginalised groups of the population, many of them poor and vulnerable.

However, "suicides are preventable," Chan said. -- AFP

Bintang Tari Mak Yong, Zamzuriah Zahari tumpuan istimewa #KakiseniFest

Wartawan Malaysiakini ditahan polis
