Honda Amerika didenda AS$70j kerana gagal lapor kematian, kecederaan

18 years after he was executed for rape, Chinese teen is found innocent

A Chinese teenager executed after being convicted of murder and rape 18 years ago was declared innocent by a court Monday, in a rare overturning of a wrongful conviction.
The 18-year-old, named Hugjiltu and also known as Qoysiletu, was found guilty and put to death in Inner Mongolia in 1996, but doubt was cast on the verdict when another man confessed to the crime in 2005.
“The Inner Mongolia Higher People’s Court finds Hugjiltu’s original guilty verdict... is not consistent with the facts and there is insufficient evidence,” the court in Hohhot said in a statement.
“Hugjiltu is found not guilty.”  - the court in Hohhot, in a statement.

The retrial comes after a pledge by leaders of the ruling Communist Party to strengthen the rule of law “with Chinese characteristics” – a concept experts caution refers to greater central control over the courts rather than judicial independence.
Hugjiltu’s parents compensation of 30,000 yuan (S$6,350), according to the official Xinhua News Agency – although the money was a personal donation by the head of the court, it added, rather than an official payment by the institution.
Images on social media showed the deputy president (below) apologising to Hugjiltu’s now elderly parents.
“This is an amazing thing the court did, to admit that they were wrong,” said Wang Gongyi, deputy director of the research institute of the Ministry of Justice.
“It also sends a clear message to the police and prosecutors around the country: if there’s not enough evidence, don’t impose wrongful convictions,” he told AFP.
“In the future, this case will be singled out as what not to do and will influence the entire legal system.”
Police in Hohhot, where the crime took place, said they opened an investigation into the officers responsible for the original case, according to the Legal Evening News.
The regional court said Hugjiltu’s confession did not match the autopsy report as well as being inconsistent with “other evidence", and that DNA evidence presented at the trial did not definitively connect him to the crime.
 Wrongful convictions
China’s courts, controlled by the ruling Communist Party, have a near-100 percent conviction rate in criminal cases and confessions extracted under dubious conditions are commonplace.
In Hugjiltu’s case, authorities interrogated the teenager for 48 hours, after which he confessed to having raped and choked the woman in the toilet of a textile factory, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported in November. He was executed 61 days after the woman’s death.
Hugjiltu’s family tried for nearly a decade to prove his innocence, according to reports, and the Higher People’s Court officially began a retrial in November.
Many on social media decried what they saw as insufficient compensation for such a grave miscarriage of justice, with one asking: “Is 30,000 yuan really enough to buy the life of a family member?”
Others demanded the court officials and police responsible for the original conviction be held responsible.
“We must bring all those morally corrupt public security officers to justice,” another user said on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging platform.
China executes more people than the rest of the world combined, according to rights groups. The country put an estimated 2,400 people to death last year.
China has occasionally exonerated wrongfully executed convicts after others came forward to confess their crimes, or in some cases because the supposed murder victim was later found alive.
In one case, police claimed a dead body was that of a woman who had recently disappeared and charged Teng Xingshan with her murder. Teng was executed by firing squad in 1989, but in 1993 the supposedly murdered woman returned to the village saying she had been kidnapped.
Teng was exonerated of all crimes in 2005.
Several other high-profile wrongful convictions have sparked public outrage in recent years.
Last year, a man who served 17 years in prison for killing his wife was declared innocent by an appeals court in the eastern province of Anhui.
A few months earlier two men who had been sentenced to death and life in prison in 2004 for the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl were also acquitted. - AFP

Manchester United poised to make huge bid for Cavani?

Manchester United are set to make a summer move for PSG striker Edinson Cavani, reports the Daily Star. United will not take up their option to sign Radamel Falcao on a permanent basis this summer and have turned their attentions to Uruguayan star Cavani instead.

Cavani is known to want to leave the French capital and United are one of the few clubs who can meet the astronomical £62 million asking fee. A fee that would see United break the British record transfer fee of £59.7m they paid for Angel Di Maria over the summer. The source of the story comes from the usually reliable French publication Le 10 Sport.

Paper Round’s view: Cavani is a striker of some renown and would, it is fair to say, walk into – and improve – most teams in the world.

However, United have more pressing areas of concern to address in their team ahead of attack. Securing a deal for a central defender and a deep lying midfielder should be prioritised over another striker.

Of course, the future of Radamel Falcao is central to all of this – if United do take their option to sign him then this move would surely be off. However, Cavani is said to have suitors in Italy - namely Juventus.

Four in five people worldwide now own a smartphone, recently published figures show.

According to the Global Web Index Device third quarter survey, 80% of online adults now possess a smartphone, while 50% own a tablet. And a huge 91% own a PC or laptop.

The figures are fairly equal between men and women, although when it comes to age, the 25-34 demographic is the most likely to be connected via smartphone, while those aged between 55 and 64 are the least likely to own the technology.

The mobile Internet sector is increasing, with web users spending an average of 1.85 hours per day online via their phones, the report states. However, this number varies depending on demographic, rising to 2.84 hours for 16- to 24-year-olds.

Wearable devices, however, have yet to enjoy the same success, with only 9% of participants confessing to owning a smart watch and even fewer (7%) a smart wristband. Those aged 25-34 take the lead in this category.

Global Web Index interviews more than 170,000 Internet users in 32 international markets annually. Approximately 40,000 participants are used in each quarterly study.

‘Selfie sticks’ give new perspective at tech show

JOINING THE PARTY: Long popular in Asia, Narcissticks are starting to catch on with Westerners and becoming a hot item at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. — AFP

LAS VEGAS: “Selfie sticks” — the lightweight monopods which hold smartphones to get a better angle for self portraits — are making the tech community look at things from a new perspective.

These devices became a hot item at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where dozens of manufacturers and distributors were fielding orders to meet consumer demand.

Priced as low as US$5 (RM18), the selfie sticks took some of the limelight in a show that features US$10,000 (RM35,680) television sets and other pricey hardware.

“They’re flying off the shelves, they are one of our hottest items,” said Katie Kunsman with the New Jersey-based manufacturer and wholesaler Motion Systems, at her booth at the Las Vegas tech gathering.

Kunsman said the trend has taken off in the past few months, led by enthusiasts of extreme sports like rock climbing.

“If you go rock climbing you can get a picture from a good angle hanging off a cliff,” she said.

The origins of the selfie stick are unclear. Some say the trend began in Asia, others point to the extreme sports community and similar devices made for the GoPro camera.

“When I go to a music event, everyone has one,” said Aaron Sanchez at the stand for Mybat, a wholesaler of wireless accessories.

“You can take pictures from different angles that you wouldn’t be able to get otherwise, you can take group selfies. You can get everyone in the picture and you don’t have to ask someone to take it.”

The selfie sticks extend the smartphone camera away from the user by up to about 1.5m (60in), providing a better angle than is possible by simply extending the device at arm’s length.

Some of the gadgets are sold at a very low price, but adding a wireless Bluetooth button to snap pictures can boost the cost to US$30 (RM107) to US$40 (RM142) or more.

Sometimes called “narcissticks” because they promote the self-centred picture trend, the devices have faced a ban in South Korea if they use unauthorised radio frequencies.

Selfies on CES floor

On the CES show floor, Christina Hutchinson offered visitors a chance to snap a picture to promote “The Selfie Stick” sold by New York-based LOTP Marketing.

SAY CHEESE: Christina Hutchinson showing how to use a selfie stick, as she offers visitors a chance to take a selfie to promote "The Selfie Stick". — AFP

LOTP’s Robert Rickheeram said his firm began manufacturing and selling the sticks last year, after his parents bought one in Greece at the same time he found one in China.

“We were one of the first, although I can’t confirm we were the first” to start manufacturing and selling in the United States.

“We recognised the trend and we were able to get the website theselfiestick.com.”

Rickheeram said it’s not clear if any single company can be dominant in the emerging stick sector. “Anyone can make these,” he said. “There are no patents, although we have a patent pending.”

He said his device was designed with a strong clamp that holds the smartphone securely in place.

Wow look! A Personal Computer on a Stick!

You can get pretty much anything on a stick. You can actually, and I kid you not, get fried butter on a stick. And soon, thanks to Intel, you can even get a full, Windows 8.1 PC on a stick.

The Windows 8.1-based Compute Stick contains a quad-core Atom processor, 32 gigabytes of storage, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and wi-fi and Bluetooth support. It will retail for $149, early this year. A separate Linux version will contain half the RAM, a third of the storage, and will sell for a reduced $89.

Here’s the thing in all its stick-y glory:

Intel is working to shrink the size of its computing products. Its new Quark SE SOC — system on a chip — could help the wearable revolution become less a dream, and more of a functional reality. Intel was late to smartphones and tablets — its earnings tell that story each quarter — but when it comes to even smaller machines, the company appears bent on not falling behind.

  • Helikopter pasukan Sar mendarat di atas Kapal Perang Republik Indonesia (KRI) Banda Aceh. Misi mencari serpihan dan mangsa QZ8501 kini memasuki hari ke-13 semalam.

JAKARTA - INDONESIA.

Chelsea say £500m move for Lionel Messi is 'impossible'

Chelsea have distanced themselves from the prospect of making a £500million move for Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

The Premier League leaders have been linked with Messi following claims in Spain this week that the 27-year-old's relationship with Barca coach Luis Enrique has broken down.

Assistant-coach Steve Holland believes the sums involved in luring Messi away from the Nou Camp make the transfer impossible for any club.

Facing the media in place of absent manager Jose Mourinho, Holland said on Friday: "Jose has made it quite clear that in this window his expectation is that nobody comes and nobody goes.

"I recall him this time last year saying a similar thing, but a couple of things happened that made us reactive. Manchester United made a huge bid for Juan Mata. Sometimes you have to react.

"But the hope and expectation is that nobody leaves and nobody comes. We're happy with what we have.

"This club conforms with financial fair play - we've brought one or two players in over the last 12 months but it's quite clear that players have been sold to balance the books.

"When you look at the numbers being mentioned around the Messi deal, I think it's almost an impossible deal for any club working within the restraints of financial fair play."

Mazda CX-5 facelift, Mazda 3 CKD arriving in March, Mazda 6 CKD to start with facelifted

Along with the upcoming Mazda CX-3, local distributor Bermaz has its 2015 calendar full of a slew of other new products in the pipeline, according to the same investor’s report by CIMB.

First up is the facelifted Mazda CX-5, which made its debut in Los Angeles along with the CX-3 in November. Mazda’s refreshed C-segment crossover is set to make reach our shores as early as March or April, two years after the current car (which made up 49.1% of Mazda’s sales in Malaysia in the first half of the 2014/15 financial year) went on sale here in February 2013.

Exterior changes include new head- and tail lights, grille inserts, fog lights and wheels, while the cabin receives upgraded switchgear, upholstery and trim, an electronic parking brake, redesigned seat structures and the MZD Connect infotainment system. The engine, suspension and drivetrain have all been tweaked for reduced noise, a flatter ride and improved fuel economy.

Possibly joining the CX-5 will be the locally-assembled Mazda 3, which is also slated to be introduced in March (it was originally estimated to arrive in the third quarter of 2014), with Bermaz already test assembling eight units at Inokom’s Kulim plant.

With increased localisation and incentives from the Industrial Adjustment Fund, the CKD 3 is expected to cost considerably less than before – under RM110k for the mid-spec 2.0 litre model and under RM120k for the high-spec variant, compared to RM138,935 OTR for the current CBU car. Bermaz is said to be dropping plans for the sub-RM90k 1.5 litre model, in order to avoid cannibalising sales of the upcoming Mazda 2.

Last but not least is the CKD Mazda 6 which is finally set to make its market introduction in the third quarter of this year. CIMB notes that Bermaz will kick off local assembly with the facelifted model also unveiled in LA, which gets some exterior updates, a thoroughly-revised interior and improved NVH levels.

Prices will reportedly drop by between RM10k-RM20k over current CBU models, which are currently priced at RM159,455 and RM189,728 OTR for the 2.0 litre and 2.5 litre sedans respectively.

Father sacrifices five children 'to gain magic powers'

KARACHI: A Pakistani father-of-six is on the run after strangling five of his children to death, apparently believing the sacrifice would endow him with magical powers including alchemy, police said Friday.

Ali Nawaz Leghari, 40, killed the two girls and three boys, aged between three and 13 overnight Thursday in the village of Saeed Khan, some 230 kilometres (140 miles) north of the city of Karachi.

"The man's financial condition was bad but he was also learning black magic and it seems that he made the sacrifice to excel in the craft," police officer Qamaruddin Rahimo told AFP.

Amjad Sheikh, the district's police chief, confirmed the incident which occurred while Leghari was undertaking a 40-day spiritual journey, known as a 'Chilla' prescribed to him by a pir (living saint) that he hoped would teach him the art of alchemy.

Rahimo said that on Tuesday Leghari had attempted to poison the family's dinner but was spotted by his wife, resulting in a bitter quarrel.

The wife along with their eldest son left the house to go and stay with her parents.

With the pair out of the way, Leghari was able to successfully carry out his plan to sedate the remaining five children and then used a rope that was found at the scene to strangle them, said Rahimo.

"He strangled them one by one inside the room and later dumped them on a bed in the courtyard," he said, adding police were now hunting Leghari down.

Black magic practices are rooted in mystic Sufi lore and have traditionally been the domain of pirs and aamils (sorcerers).

The practice is particularly strong in rural parts of the country including the impoverished southern Sindh province where the killings took place.

Singapore 'mermaid' makes $500 an hour from $5,000 tail

People think of mermaids as graceful mythical sea creatures.

But Ms Cara Nicole Neo knows being one is not as glamorous as it looks.

Since July 2013, she has been transforming into Mermaid Syrena for children's parties and corporate events.

Her feet blister when she swims in her silicon mermaid tail for a long period of time, and her eyes have become more sensitive to bright light after prolonged exposure to chlorinated water.

But she takes it all in her stride.

Ms Neo loves "mermaiding" so much she even designed and shipped a 15kg made-to-measure silicon tail from the US, which cost around $5,000.

Charlie Hebdo will print a million copies of its next edition

Charlie Hebdo will not stop skewering politics and religion alike despite the horrific January 7th attack that killed 12 people, including many of its staff and two policemen.

Instead, the Paris-based journal will publish a million copies of its next edition on January 14th, compared to a normal printing run of around 50,000. It'll likely sell out easily, given a spontaneous display of unity and supportfor freedom of speech displayed by French protesters.

To make the run possible, the government kicked in almost €1 million ($1.2 million), while French newspapers pledged €250,000 ($296,000). Google's Press Innovation Fund added another €250,000 and the Guardian Media Group contributed £100,000 ($150,000). The paper is also asking the public to subscribe at a reduced rate or make a donation.

The support will not only aid the large print run, but help keep the journal operating in the near-term. Charlie Hebdonever backed down from its uber-irreverent brand of satire that targeted politicians, celebrities and extremists of all stripes, despite numerous death threats and a 2011 fire-bombing

In an emotional interview on France 2 last night, Charliejournalist Patrick Pelloux -- who was late to the meeting where the slaughter took place -- said that "they killed pacifists and tolerant people. It's not just one journal that was attacked, but all publications everywhere."
