Man pleads not guilty to abusing daughter

Mohd Shaikful Adli's counsel Saiful Ambar Abdullah Ambar had sought bail for his client while deputy public prosecutor Khairul Fairuz Rahman had opposed the granting of bail.

BUTTERWORTH: A 34-year-old man pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here today to subjecting his seven-year-old daughter to physical and emotional abuse.

The malnourished girl was left in captive and abused in an apartment unit near Sungai Dua here. Her health deteriorated and she was reportedly left to shrink to a worrying weight of below eight kilogramme.

Magistrate Muhammad Firdaus Abdul Wahab set Feb 25 for mention of the case. He granted Mohd Shaikful Adli bail of RM8,000 in one surety on condition that he did not interfere with the victim or prosecution witnesses during the trial.

Mohd Shaikful Adli's counsel Saiful Ambar Abdullah Ambar had sought bail for his client while deputy public prosecutor Khairul Fairuz Rahman had opposed the granting of bail.

The girl is undergoing treatment at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

The Standard One pupil was found weak and hungry on Jan 15 in a Sungai Dua house which was without electricity and water supply.

Altantuya murder: On what grounds was Sirul arrested, lawyer asks

Kamarul stated that the next step for the defense counsel depends on the action to be taken by Malaysian authorities. - File Photo

KUALA LUMPUR: Sirul Azhar Umar, who is currently in immigration detention in Queensland, Brisbane has contacted his defense team and instructed the counsel to pursue necessary legal proceedings in the Malaysian court, said lawyer Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin.

“We have contacted Sirul and was given the mandate to take any legal action permitted under these circumstances,” said Kamarul Hisham when contacted by Astro AWANI .

He stated that the next move to be taken by the defense counsel team depends on the actions by the Malaysian authorities.

“We need to know the official status of his (Sirul) detention. Is his detention based on immigration law or the result of the red notice issuance by the International Police (Interpol) for his arrest.

"So far, nobody seems to know anything and it is paramount for us to verify it first,” said Kamarul, adding that to date, news about the arrest of Sirul can only be obtained from reports published by Australian media.

Sirul is subjected to extradition by Malaysian Federal Court and he faces death sentence after found guilty in conviction of murder to Mongolian model and translator, Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The Malaysian government insisted that Sirul be arrested and sent back to Kuala Lumpur, where the country's Federal Court has ordered that he and former police chief inspector Azilah Hadri, 38, be executed.

Last week, Bernama reported that Sirul’s defence counsel team would mount challenge of the extradition request against him.

Kamarul said the next step depends on the instruction from his client.

New face for the Honda CR-V

Well not exactly a new face but there are a number of changes to everybody’s favourite SUV.

The outer shell may look similar to the model the new CR-V replaces, you need to look a little closer to notice the difference, but there are major switches under the metal. The biggest introduction is of course the 2.0-litre 2WD version.
Honda had introduced the 2WD variant thanks to the high demand for two-wheel-drive-SUVs. The new 2.0-litre 2WD variant will provide more options to active achievers and young urban families.

The new 2.0-litre 2WD variant shares the same powertrain as the 2.0-litre 4WD (SOHC i-VTEC; 153bhp and 190Nm) which is mated to a five-speed Automatic Transmission to provide perfect balance of fuel efficiency and performance. Thanks to the two-wheel-drive nature the 2WD variant offers better fuel efficiency than the other two variants.

2WD aside what’s new about the new CR-V? Here’s what we’ve found out.
  • To highlight the CR-V’s bolder and more aggressive sentiments, Honda has added a two-tier front grille with chrome accents.
  • Look below the metal and you will find new front and rear bumpers to give the CR-V a solid outlook.
  • New interior features include Smart Entry with Push-Start Button, LED Daytime Running Lights and eight-way driver power seats.
  • One-Motion Rear Foldable Seats are awesome for increasing the CR-V’s cargo space area from 589-litres to 1146-litres.
  • The 2.4-litre 4WD is now equipped with the Honda LaneWatch, a camera installed on the left side mirror will play a live feed of the road when the left signal is turned on. This is a first for this segment.
  • You get the usual safety features in the new CR-V with six airbags on the 2.4-litre 4WD variant and four airbags on the 2.0-litre 2WD and 2.0-litre 4WD variant.

Pick out the new CR-V from five colours – Modern Steel Metallic, Taffeta While, Twilight Blue Metallic, Alabaster Silver Metallic and Crystal Black Pearl, and pair it with four accessories packages that combine interior and exterior enhancements. You already saw how good the Modulo package had looked on the CR-V!

The new Honda CR-V comes with a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and service interval of 10,000km and retails at RM139,800.00 for the 2.0-litre 2WD, RM150,800.00 for the 2.0-litre 4WD and RM169,800.00 for the 2.4-litre 4WD variant.

Chrome for iOS plays nicely with Mac browsers, big iPhones

At long last, Google has overhauled its Chrome browser for iOS to fit into the company's Material Design language -- and thankfully, it's a lot more than a fresh coat of paint.

The newly released Chrome 40 gives you the expected bright colors, flat surfaces and fancy animations of Google's latest interface philosophy, but its big deal is rich support for iOS 8. The app is now fully compatible with larger iPhones, and it'll hand off web links to the preferred browser on your Mac (if you're running OS X Yosemite, that is).

If you're a fan of Chrome but wish that it fit better into Apple's world, you'll want to swing by the App Store for the update.

Pill could make jet lag a thing of the past

Dr. Boivin says no reasonable solutions have been found to make life easier for night shift workers and that light therapy, for example, can do more harm than good. - Tom Bilek/Shutterstock.com

Resetting the circadian rhythm, what's also known as the body's internal clock, could soon be a simple question of taking a pill, according to researchers at McGill University in Canada.

Their study, which was published in the journal of the Federation of American Studies for Experimental Biology, demonstrated for the first time the role of the hormone cortisol in controlling the circadian rhythms.

It's because of our circadian rhythms that it can be difficult to fall asleep earlier than normal and staying up all night can cause mayhem in the body that could even lead to metabolic and cardiovascular health problems.

"Problems adjusting to atypical work schedules are a major issue for society," says Dr. Diane B. Boivin, Director of the Centre for Study and Treatment of Circadian Rhythms at McGill. "Our previous studies clearly show that desynchronized circadian clocks disrupt the sleep, performance and cardiac parameters of night-shift workers."

Dr. Boivin says no reasonable solutions have been found to make life easier for night shift workers and that light therapy, for example, can do more harm than good.

The team studied the rhythmic expression of clock genes -- the genes that drive the body clock and communicate with the central clock -- in white blood cells.

White blood cells are called into action when a pathogen invades, so the presence of clock genes in these cells indicates that circadian rhythms could play a role in the immune system functions.

It turns out, according to the study, that glucocorticoids such as cortisol transmit these signals that facilitate communication between the body's central clock -- located in the brain -- and the clock genes in other cells and organs.

"At this stage, we are not recommending the use of glucocorticoids to adjust the rhythms of night-shift workers, as there could be medical risks," says Dr. Boivin.

"However, these results lead us to believe that we may one day be able to use a combined therapy that targets the central clock (inverting work schedules, administering controlled light therapy) with a pharmacological treatment that targets the peripheral clocks to ensure that all clocks are adjusted."

Isuzu MU-X launching this year

The Isuzu MU-X, a D-Max-based seven-seat SUV, is set to enter the Malaysian market sometime this year, Isuzu Malaysia COO Daisuke Ishida has told InfoKereta.com.

At this year’s Isuzu Dura Mission event in Sabah, Ishida told our sister site that our MU-X will be fully-imported (CBU) from Thailand, and that only one variant will be introduced here. He declined to divulge more details, however.

Based on the second-gen D-Max pick-up truck, the Isuzu MU-X succeeded the MU-7, which was built on the bones of the first-gen D-Max. It is on sale today in Thailand, Australia and the Philippines.

Related to the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Holden Colorado 7, the MU-X debuted in 2013 in Thailand, where it is available with 136 hp/320 Nm 2.5 litre and 177 hp/380 Nm 3.0 litre engines, both variable geometry-turbocharged diesels.

The Land of Smiles can also choose between two- and four-wheel drive, five-speed manual or five-speed auto ‘boxes. The D-Max’s Terrain Command 4WD features here – you can switch between 4×2 and 4×4 at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Available equipment includes a seven-inch Media Solutions DVD touch-screen, eight speakers, keyless entry and start, combination leather upholstery, auto air-con and a reverse camera – we wonder how many of these we’ll get. Will our MU-X give the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the upcoming Ford Everest a run for their money?

KPN sahkan Sirul Azhar ditahan di Queensland

Khalid Abu Bakar

Sterling slalom checks Chelsea in League Cup, drew 1 - 1

Chelsea's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas tries to catch Liverpool's German midfielder Emre Can (L) during the English League Cup semi-final first leg football match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield in Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL: Raheem Sterling's magnificent second-half solo goal earned Liverpool a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at a snow-speckled Anfield on Tuesday.

With Chelsea leading through Eden Hazard's 18th-minute penalty, Jose Mourinho's side were poised to pull off a classic smash-and-grab when Sterling surged through their defence to equalise in the 59th minute.

The goal, Sterling's seventh of the season, was a demonstration of the 20-year-old England forward's quicksilver brilliance and was the reward for a committed and industrious display by Brendan Rodgers's men.

"I'm delighted with the performance, disappointed with the result. We thoroughly deserved to win the game," said Rodgers.

"We showed wonderful character. Some of our play was very impressive and it sets up the second leg perfectly because they've probably got to open up a bit more.

"It's still all to play for. It was a great game and that shows the improvements that we're making."

Sterling's goal prevented Premier League leaders Chelsea from recording a third successive victory at Anfield, where they famously derailed Liverpool's title challenge last season.

Liverpool appear to have belatedly digested that disappointment, having now lost only once on their last 15 outings in all competitions.

But Chelsea's away goal means that Mourinho -- seeking to win the trophy for a third time -- will feel he holds the upper hand ahead of next week's return leg.

"It's a draw. I am not sad as a defeat, not as happy as a victory. My emotion is in the middle," Mourinho told the BBC.

"I'm not saying we are favourites now. This semi-final was two legs and now it's only one match, and that's at Stamford Bridge. We defended well and our goalkeeper was good."

The winners will face either Tottenham Hotspur or third-tier Sheffield United in the English season's first major final on March 1.

    Can concedes penalty

Predictably, Mourinho's plea for Chelsea's fans not to sing their song about Steven Gerrard fell on deaf ears, with the visiting supporters quick to remind the Liverpool captain about his notorious slip in the London club's 2-0 win at Anfield last April.

But Gerrard almost silenced them in the 16th minute, letting fly with the kind of dipping 30-yard shot that was once his trademark, only for the recalled Thibaut Courtois to palm it over the bar.

It came after a spell of Liverpool pressure that briefly ignited the freezing crowd, but within two minutes, the hosts were behind.

After Cesc Fabregas darted past him, Emre Can stuck out a leg, and Hazard fell over it. Referee Martin Atkinson deemed it a penalty and Hazard sent his Belgium team-mate Simon Mignolet the wrong way from the spot.

It was the precursor to some meaty challenges in midfield, but Liverpool were initially unable to lay a glove on Chelsea where it mattered.

The ball appeared to strike Diego Costa's arm after he went to ground inside the Chelsea box in first-half stoppage time, but the hosts' animated penalty appeals were waved away.

Chelsea continued to resist early in the second half, Gary Cahill blocking from Sterling, but just before the hour Liverpool drew level with a goal of shimmering quality.

Receiving a pass from Jordan Henderson with his back to goal 40 yards out, Sterling span away from Nemanja Matic and then glided past Cahill before drilling home with his left foot.

Liverpool had their tails up and a second goal seemed imminent, with Gerrard curling a left-foot shot against the post and Courtois plunging to his right to thwart Philippe Coutinho.

Gerrard made way for Adam Lallana with 20 minutes to play, but the home side continued to pepper Courtois's goal with shots, obliging the giant Belgian to save from Henderson, Sterling and Lallana.

Honda CR-V facelift launched in Malaysia – from RM139,800

No short of attention on the upcoming Honda HR-V, which is launching soon in Malaysiaafter being introduced in Indonesia and Thailand, so this may come as a surprise to many. Honda Malaysia has pulled the wraps off big brother Honda CR-V facelift, the mid-size SUV segment leader here.

The fourth-generation Honda CR-V has been in town since March 2013, with the range topping 2.4L introduced in July that year. The Honda CR-V facelift surfaced in the US late last year, which makes this local introduction a swift one, in relation to both the local car’s cycle and the MMC’s first appearance.

We have so far seen the US, European and Thai versions of the CR-V facelift, and ours match the latter two versions in terms of looks – US-market SUVs usually get a steeper approach angle for fuel economy rating reasons.

It’s a pretty distinct one as facelifts go, with the appearance of Honda’s latest “Solid Wing Face” graphic and headlights that now feature integrated LED daytime running lights. The lower front apron also gets some new chrome highlights and a silver lip.

At the back, the tail light internals have been revised, new chrome trim has been added to the tailgate above the number plate recess, and the rear bumper has been squared off and features a new silver underguard and rear fog lamps. You also won’t miss the new turbine design wheels – 17s for the 2.0L, 18s for 2.4L.

The dimensions are largely similar (1,820 mm wide, 1,685 mm tall, 2,620 mm wheelbase), but length has grown by 45 mm to 4,590 mm due to chunkier bumpers. Boot capacity is 589 litres, expandable to 1,146 litres with the rear seats folded, measured up to the window line. Two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs will fit, and collapsing the seats is a single-motion affair via levers on the boot wall.

Two variants were offered previously; now there’s three – 2.0L 2WD, 2.0L 4WD and 2.4L 4WD. The 2.0L 2WD is the new one, channeling drive from an unchanged 2.0 litre SOHC i-VTEC motor (155 PS at 6,500 rpm/190 Nm at 4,300 rpm) to the front wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox.

Same R20A/5AT powertrain for the 2.0L 4WD, but with the addition of Real Time 4WD that channels torque to the rear axle when needed. Honda claims fuel consumption of 13 km/l for the 2.0L 2WD and 12.25 km/l for the 2.0L 4WD.

The 2.4L 4WD is powered by a DOHC i-VTEC unit that makes 190 PS at 7,000 rpm and 222 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The carry-over motor is also paired to a five-speed automatic with steering paddles. Claimed FC is 11.78 km/l. This means that besides the addition of the entry-level 2WD variant, there’s no change to the engine/gearbox lineup, unlike the Thai-market car, which gets a 2.4 litre Earth Dreams engine (from the Accord) paired to a CVT.

New features include Honda LaneWatch, which displays a visual of the left lane on the central screen once you flick the indicator. As found in the Accord, it can be turned on manually via a button on the right stalk.

LaneWatch is only for the 2.4L, which also exclusively gets a seven-inch touchscreen head unit with navigation (6.1-inch previously) and HDMI connectivity. Other 2.4-only toys are auto headlamps and wipers, steering paddles and curtain airbags for a total of six. Chrome door handles and 18-inch rims mark it out.

Buyers of the 2.0L get a lot more than before. Standard across the board are HID headlamps, LED DRLs, keyless entry (new fob) and push start, steering buttons (audio and cruise control, now with chrome outline), Bluetooth hands-free, auto-dimming rear view mirror, eight-way powered driver’s seat and dual-zone auto air con. The 2.0L 4WD gets all of the above while adding on leather seats and seven-inch touchscreen audio (without navigation).

Safety wise, the five-star ASEAN NCAP car gets four airbags (six for the 2.4), ABS, EBD, Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts and a reverse camera (multi-angle for 4WD variants).

We noticed some trim differences not listed in press materials. The dashboard area facing occupants is now soft touch with faux leather stitching, similar to that on the new City V. Also changed on the 2.4 is the wood trim (from a greyish tone to brown, silver for the 2.0) and metallic highlights on the storage area between the front seats and rear AC surrounds. The panel around the gear knob is now in black for all, as is gloss black for the AC panel.

The CR-V facelift starts from RM139,800OTR with insurance for the 2.0L 2WD, rising to RM150,800 for the 2.0L 4WD. The 2.4L is yours for RM169,800. To compare, the pre-facelift 2.0L 4WD was priced at RM148,800, the 2.4L RM169,800.

Stallone appears on big screens at Everton

US actor Sylvester Stallone appears on the big screen wearing an Everton shirt ahead of the English Premier League football match between Everton and West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park in Liverpool on Jan 19. - AFP Photo/PAUL ELLIS

LIVERPOOL: Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone made an unlikely appearance on the big screens at Goodison Park during half-time of Everton's Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

As one of the world's most famous actors, Stallone is more used to starring on the silver screen, but the 68-year-old's image appeared on the Merseyside club's video boards in a bid to whip up the crowd to provide some background colour for cameras filming a scene in his forthcoming movie 'Creed', in which he reprises his role as boxer Rocky Balboa.

Stallone, who was pictured wearing an Everton shirt, is working on the film with the professional boxer, and Everton supporter, Tony Bellew, who helped arrange the actor's message.

Stallone first visited Goodison eight years ago when he came onto the pitch to wave at supporters before Everton played Reading.

On that occasion he was greeted with a warm reception, but his recorded video message on Monday failed to produce such an enthusiastic response from the Goodison faithful, who were perhaps still miffed that their team's forward Kevin Mirallas had missed a penalty moments earlier.

Chronology of Roman Catholic Church's case of over 'Allah' issue

The Herald published in four languages has been using the word 'Allah' to refer to God in its Malay language section, for the consumption of Catholic readers in Sabah and Sarawak. - File Photo

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court in Putrajaya is scheduled to hear the review application over the use of the word 'Allah' in the Catholic church's Bahasa Malaysia section of The Herald weekly, today.

Following is the chronology of the case:

      2009:

Feb 16 - The Roman Catholic Church led by Archbishop Murphy Pakiam files a judicial review application at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to declare the Home Ministry's ban of its use of the word 'Allah' in its Herald weekly, as illegal.

The applicant named the ministry and government as respondents. The Herald published in four languages has been using the word 'Allah' to refer to God in its Malay language section, for the consumption of Catholic readers in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Catholic Church sought declarations among others that:

      1. It has the constitutional right to use the word 'Allah' in the Herald, as it is its right like other religions other than Islam to practise the faith in peace.

      2. Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution does not provide for any authority to the respondent to ban the applicant from using the word 'Allah' in the Herald.

      3. It has the constitutional right to use the word 'Allah' in the weekly as per its right to freedom of speech and expression.

      4. It has the constitutional right to use the word 'Allah' in the Herald, as per its right to religious freedom and managing its own religious affairs.

      5. It has the constitutional right to use the word 'Allah' in the Herald, as per its right to educate Catholic on Christianity.

      6. The Printing and Publishing Act 1984 did not give the respondent the power to ban the applicant from using the word 'Allah' in the Herald.

      7. The word 'Allah' is not exclusive to Islam.

Dec 31 - The High Court in allowing the Catholic Church's judicial review application, declares that the Home Ministry's decision to prohibit Herald from using the word 'Allah' in its Bahasa Malaysia publication specifically to cater to Christians in Sabah and Sarawak, was illegal, null and void.

The court held that the Herald had the constitutional right to use the word in its weekly bulletin to propagate Christianity but not Islam.

The judge said according to Article 11(4) of the Federal Constitution it was wrong for non-Muslims to use the word 'Allah' to spread their religion among Muslims.

Nevertheless, it was not wrong for non-Muslims to use the word to propagate their religions among non Muslims, held the judge.

The judge further held that under Article 11 and 12 of the Federal Constitution, Herald had the constitutional right to use the word for religious and education purposes among Christians.

The judge said the minister concerned had failed to furnish proof that the use of the word would threaten the country's security and create misunderstanding and confusion among the Muslims.

      2010:

Jan 4 - The Home Ministry and government files an appeal at the Court of Appeal Registry to set aside the High Court's decision.

Jan 6 - The Kuala Lumpur High Court granted a stay of an earlier order to allow the use of 'Allah' by Catholic weekly, Herald, following consent by the Home Ministry and the Roman Catholic Archbishop on grounds of national interest.

      2013:

Sept 10 - The Court of Appeal hears the Home Ministry and government's appeal over the High Court ruling.

Oct 14 - The Court of Appeal led by Federal Court Judge Datuk Seri Mohamed Apandi Ali unanimously allowed the ministry and government's appeal to ban Herald from using the word 'Allah'. The court of appeal set aside the High Court's 2009 decision that allowed the Herald to use the word 'Allah'.

Justice Mohamed Apandi, leading a three-member panel, said it was the court's common finding that the word 'Allah' was never an integral part of the faith of practice of Christianity.

He said taking into consideration historical and religious facts, he could not find any plausible reason why the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur was "adamant" to use the word 'Allah' in its weekly newsletter.

Nov 11 - The Catholic Church files an application for leave to appeal to the Federal Court and outlined 26 questions of law which involved three areas, namely, constitutional questions, administrative issues and whether the court can decide on comparative religious issues.

      2014:

March 5 - Hearing of the Catholic Church's application for leave to appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision to ban the Herald from using the word 'Allah' in its publication; the Federal Court has reserved judgement to a date yet to be fixed.

June 23 - The Federal Court in a 4-3 majority verdict rejected the Catholic Church's leave to appeal to lift the government's ban on the use of the word 'Allah' to refer to God in its weekly Herald's Bahasa Malaysia section.

Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria chairing a seven-member panel held that the 28 questions on administrative law, constitutional law and general questions framed by the church failed to meet the threshold requirements under Section 96 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 to be given leave to appeal.

He said the Court of Appeal had correctly applied the objective test with regard to the minister's discretion to ban the use of the word 'Allah' in the Herald.

Justice Arifin held that the High Court judge ought not to have entertained the church's challenge on the validity or constitutionality of various state enactments which seek to control and restrict the propagation of non-Islamic religious doctrines and belief amongst Muslims.

Sept 19 - The Catholic Church files a review application against the Federal Court decision which had denied it leave to appeal over the home minister's ban on the use of the word 'Allah'.

The application was based on three broad grounds including certain legal issues which were central to the leave application relating to the scope of Article 3 and Article 11 of the Federal Constitution.

Rafizi: Ada benda penting Najib tertinggal

Rafizi Ramli - Foto Sinar Harian
