MIRI: Ex-national sprinter Watson Nyambek has denied writing an article about the SEA Games 2019 that was published by the Brunei Times on Monday.
Watson, 39, who holds the 100-metres national record which still stands today, said he had never written or authorised anyone to write on his behalf for the purpose of publication.
"I regret that this thing had happened and will not allow it to happen again in future," he told Bernama here today.
He lodged a report last night at Miri police station to clear his name after being told about the article by his wife.
"The article was clearly trying to tarnish my name and reputation as State Sports Council coach," he said.
He hoped police would take action against the individual who had used his name without permission.
Based on the police report lodged by Watson, the article purportedly written by him was posted on the website of Brunei Times on June 8 in the 'Letters to the Editor' section.
The writer claiming to be Watson Nyambek had written the article in reference to a front page story entitled, 'Brunei will not host SEA GAmes 2019', which appeared in the same publication on June 5.
The Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council was quoted by the paper as saying that lack of sports facilities and accommodation and inadequate preparation for athletes were the reasons for Brunei's reluctance.
The writer supported the move claiming, the money spent on organising the games could be better utilised elsewhere and that the standard of Brunei athletes was not on par with those of other countries in the region.
