Dear last-minute shopper, is GST truly a life-changing experience?

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Perhaps you have seen the long snaking lines of shoppers or the empty shelves as Malaysia stocks up ahead of the arrival of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) tomorrow.. 

Traders are seeing brisk business with even big ticket items like televisions selling like hot cakes, while consumers shrewdly stock up on items to save every sen they can before prices go up with the GST.

Tempted to join them as the clock counts down?

But how much of a difference will this consumption tax really make to the life of Malaysians, or more importantly, their pockets? Will adopting a thriftier lifestyle be the solution?

What about those who already live on mostly essential items, which Putrajaya has promised not to impose the GST on?

Here’s a glimpse into life as it will be from tomorrow. At least until market forces dictate otherwise or unless Putrajaya decides to widen the list of GST-free items:
