KUALA LUMPUR: Singer Famiza Zulkifli, who was popular in the 1980s, passed away last night following heart complications.

According to Berita Harian, the singer, more popularly known as Famieza, died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL). She was 42.

Famieza shot to fame in 1989 with her jazz and R&B album Getaran, and was known as one of the first few in the country to popularise the genre.

Her death came as a surprise to many, as folks began sharing their messages of condolence on her Facebook page.

As of yesterday, Famieza was still actively updating her Facebook page, with the latest posting of what is believed to be her son, doing archery.

“After Omar, now Muhammad is interested (in archery)! Alhamdulillah, happy!” she had written as the caption on the photo.

Lyricist and composer Cahaya Pena, who penned the lyrics for one of Famieza’s songs, Doa Seorang Remaja said he was shocked when he heard the news from fellow composer Johan Nawawi this morning.

“She worked well with all the composers at the time. I remember her as a vibrant teenager with a good voice,” said Cahaya Pena, whose real name is Azmi Abdul Rahman. He said this when asked about his experience working with Famieza on Getaran.

“She was a down-to-earth, humble and warm person. She was also a very disciplined singer,” he told The Rakyat Post today.

The music to Doa Seorang Remaja was written by the late Adam Ahmad.

Later on in life, Famieza moved away from singing and entered business as she became the managing director of Muslimah Manufacturing Sdn Bhd.

On her instagram account, it is stated that her company is a manufacturer and exporter of halal skincare, cosmetics, personal care and home care products.

According to The Star Online, her remains would be laid to rest at the Seri Muda Cemetery in Gombak.
