KUALA LUMPUR: The Pardons Board has rejected Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s petition for royal pardon over his sodomy conviction.
According to senior federal counsel Amarjeet Singh, Anwar also lost his qualification as an MP following the rejection.
Anwar who was Permatang Pauh MP is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor and Pakatan Rakyat leader.
It had been reported on Friday, March 27, 2015, that the petition to obtain a royal pardon for Anwar had been ‘disposed’ on March 16 by the Pardons Board.
Amarjeet Singh who delivered the affidavit to court informed that the board had ‘disposed’ the petition.
The affidavit avowed by the director-general of the legal division of the Prime Minister’s Department has been submitted to the applicants.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family sought a royal pardon for his sodomy conviction on February 24 .
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail and his daughter Nurul Nuha went to the Istana Negara to submit the application, while Nurul Izzah has submitted an official letter to the Parliament to inform of the matter.
Anwar's second daughter, Nurul Nuha, 31, said in a statement that the petition was made 'based on Article 42 of the Federal Constitution'.
