Broadband speed may increase to 40 or 50Mbps

KUALA LUMPUR:  The government is considering to undertake an in-depth study on measures to raise the speed of the broadband service in the country to between 40 and 50  Megabit per second by the year 2020, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said the study involved the data requirement actually needed by Malaysians, besides looking at the infrastructural requirement to enable this objective to be achieved.

"In the study at the Asean member countries' level, the demand by Malaysians by the year 2018 is 49Mbps. This is a significant demand and involves considerable investment.

"(It) just cannot be achieved based on wireless (technology). It requires the installation of fibre optics which is not cheap and cannot be carried out within a short time," he told reporters after launching the LocalSIMkad.com here Monday.

He said the ministry had called up the representatives of Telekom Malaysia and the service providers to discuss the method of sharing that could be adopted and the scale of investment that the government must bear.

To provide a balance for all strata of society, Ahmad Shabery said the government was also looking for the best model to widen the service with a similar speed in the rural areas too.

Earlier in his speech, the minister said a reasonable speed for the broadband service must be one of the Malaysian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes so that it could boost the sector's contribution to the national revenue.

Meanwhile, commenting on the LocalSIMkad.com, Ahmad Shabery said it was an innovative service that was commendable as it offered the service of booking of the sim card of the travel destination concerned before the traveller took off.

"This is a product that can help the consumer to make plans especially when many people are complaining because of the high cost of roaming. Basically, no matter how sophisticated the product is, if it cannot assist the consumer, it will not provide good communication," he said.

The LocalSIMkad.com service was introduced to address the problem of exhorbitant roaming charges when the consumer is abroad, and the customer only needs to book the local sim card online which would be delivered by the company's representative to the hotel stated by the user.

It enables the customer to use the internet service at the local rate besides receiving calls at zero roaming charges.

LocalSIMkad.com has business partnerships with telecommunication companies in 16 countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, South Korea, United Kingdom, the United States and Saudi Arabia.
