Courtois sent off as Chelsea draw 2-2 with Swansea

Oscar opened the scoring with a free-kick that tempted both Chelsea and Swansea players, but crept in at the far post untouched.

Premier League result: Stamford Bridge - Chelsea 2 (Oscar 23’ Willian 30’) Swansea 2 (Ayew 29’ Gomis 55’ pen)

Chelsea went down to 10 men as Thibaut Courtois was sent off to concede a penalty, and hung on to open the season with a 2-2 draw against Swansea at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho's side started the season without any new players in their first eleven, and their established quality was enough to control the game at times, but Swansea will be pleased with Andre Ayew’s debut showing.

Andre Ayew reacted brilliantly moments later to grab an equaliser, and a minute later Willian’s deflected cross put Chelsea back in front.

Swansea equalised once more, however, when Courtois conceded a penalty and red card, bringing down Bafetimbi Gomis right on the edge of the box, and the striker duly converted.

That was part of a sustained attack from Swansea on Chelsea’s box, with Courtois's replacement Asmir Begovic pulling off a number of good saves as they managed to hold on.

Chelsea attempted to exact late pressure with the introduction of Radamel Falcao, but were unable to break down Swansea.

And now, the champions face the prospect of taking on Manchester City in their second match of the season without their number one goalkeeper. It's often said that retaining the title is always far harder than winning it; this Chelsea side appears to be finding that out already.
