Rio Ferdinand has branded the reported valuations of England duo Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling “a joke”.
The former England captain took to Twitter to vent his frustration following speculation linking Tottenham striker Kane with a £40 million switch to Manchester United and Liverpool winger Sterling with a £50m move to Manchester City.
Ferdinand compared the touted fees to those of star Premier League pair Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez. Both players were proven internationals before their arrival in England, with Aguero joining Manchester City for £38m and Sanchez moving to Arsenal for £32m.
“English players are soooo overpriced right now it's a joke!” he said. “Kane & sterling have huge potential but 40m & 50m...aguero 38m & sanchez 32m!!!”
That provoked some users to question Ferdinand’s own transfer to United, who broke the British transfer record to land him from Leeds for £30m.
But the defender, who announced his retirement from football in May, retaliated: “Look at the amount of PL & CL games I had played in before the manutd move...oh and a world cup! Don't compare me please! There are others.”
Fans can expect more forthright views from Ferdinand, who is increasing his punditry work at BT Sport from next season.

Ferdinand is right, £40-50m for a largely unproven player is ridiculous. But what choice do clubs have? With the Premier League elite facing more stringent squad regulations and a dearth of decent home grown talent available, it’s inevitable prices will become inflated.
There aren’t many home grown players who would command a regular spot at a top four club, so the scuffle to sign the likes of Kane and Sterling is bound to be fierce – with teams now able to extract a lot more money for them.
Until the country starts churning out a stream of talented players, the snag will remain.
