Hull City thump Sunderland to reach FA Cup semi-finals

March 9, 2014 - FA Cup quarter-fnal, KC Stadium - Hull 3 (Davies 68, Meyler 72, Fryatt 77) Sunderland 0

Hull City scored three goals in nine second half minutes to ease past Sunderland and reach their first FA Cup semi-final since 1930.

The Tigers spurned a golden chance to take the lead when Sonny Aluko saw his first half penalty saved by Ustari after Aluko was tripped by Sebastian Larsson.

Sunderland couldn't punish Hull for that miss and the home side eventually broke the deadlock through the impressive Curtis Davies, who leapt high to head in Tom Huddlestone's pinpoint free-kick.

Sunderland self-destructed after that, with two errors from Lee Cattermole handing Hull a second and third goal.

First, Cattermole failed to clear a bouncing ball to allow Meyler to finish the counter-attack with a slick finish, then the Sunderland skipper's loose backpass was seized upon by Fryatt, who finished easily past Ustari.

The win means Hull go to Wembley for only the second time in their 110-year history, while Sunderland are denied a second appearance at the national stadium this season.
