One drowns, three missing at Tasik Pedu

KUALA NERANG (Oct 5, 2013): One of four people who were swept away by strong currents in Tasik Pedu near here this morning, drowned while the fate of the rest, including the victim's older sister, is unknown.

The body of Siti Nur Hafliza Yahya, 13, was found in Mong Gajah, Tasik Pedu, about 40km from here at 10am, about 30 minutes after she was swept away.

Padang Terap police chief DSP Ku Yaacob Ku Hamad said a search was underway to locate the missing trio. They are Karim Taufik, 36, Siti Nur Hafliza's sister, Siti Nur Afliana, 16, and Siti Hajar Azmi, 12.

Ku Yaacob said the four, belonging to families residing at Bukit Payong, Pokok Sena, about 50km from Tasik Pedu, had earlier gone picnicking and fishing in the dam area.

"Siti Nur Hafliza was swimming at the banks of the lake when she was believed to have been swept away by currents.

"The other three tried to rescue her but were also swept away," he said when contacted.

Ku Yaacob said the search for the three were jointly carried out by the police, fire and rescue department and the civil defence department. He said the body of Siti Nur Hafliza was sent to the Kuala Nerang Hospital. – Bernama
