Memphis Depay nets as Manchester United win in San Jose

International Champions Cup, Avaya Stadium, San Jose, California. San Jose Earthquakes 1 (Alashe 42) Manchester United 3 (Mata 32, Memphis 37, Pereira 61).

Memphis Depay netted his first goal for Manchester United following his £25 million summer move from PSV Eindhoven, as Louis van Gaal's side beat MLS mid-table strugglers San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament at the Avaya Stadium.

The Netherlands international played behind main striker Wayne Rooney in the Number 10 position for the opening 45 minutes of the match in California, and although the link-up play between the two was far from telepathic, there was enough in the embryonic partnership to suggest the two might gel in the Premier League this season.

Depay, the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 22 goals, opened his United account with a cool finish past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham after being gifted possession on the edge of the area by a poor Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi backpass.

Depay's strike put United 2-0 up following Juan Mata's opener, but Dominic Kinnear's side pulled one back before the half-time break when Fatai Alashe poked the ball past United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, following some slack defending down the left touchline by Morgan Schneiderlin.

United replaced every outfield player at the break, and the game inevitably suffered a slump in intensity as a result, with the only goal coming just after the hour mark through Andreas Pereira's header from Jesse Lingard's cross.
