Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Salehhudin Abdul Rahman said the drama unfolded when Yoong Hee Kian,71, and his wife, Cheng Kwi Chu, 68, arrived home at 7.15pm from a night market in Taman Sin, Ujong Pasir.
"The car driven by Yoong entered the house equipped with automatic gates while Cheng got out to open the front door.
"Yoong then saw a man holding a pistol climbing over the wall," he told reporters when met by reporters, here last night.
Sensing danger, the businessman jumped into the car and ordered his wife to do so and bow before three gunshots rang out.
Yoong then sounded the car horn to draw the attention of neighbours to ask for help until the suspect escaped with an accomplice on a motorcycle.
Salehhudin said the police found three gunshots believed from a revolver, on the car's bumper, rear windscreen and the front door iron grille.
Meanwhile, Yoong said only he and his wife were at home during the shooting incident.
"Since the situation was very dangerous, I jumped into the car and shouted at my wife to do so and bow before pressing the car horn for one minute."
The couple who escaped unhurt only came out of the car after the suspects had fled from the scene.
