Two Malaysian arrested for breaking curfew hours, released on bail in Egypt

CAIRO:  Two Malaysian medical students who were arrested by the Egyptian authorities on Aug 18 for breaking the curfew hours here, were released on bail last Sunday.

The Malaysian embassy's security liaison officer, ACP Ishak Mohd Jani said the two were fourth year and first year students respectively at two different universities, in Cairo.

"The two were released on bail of EGP2,000 (RM1,000) each last Sunday after Asar at 4.30pm (local time)," he said when met by this Bernama reporter covering the special working visit by a Malaysian education ministry's delegation to Egypt.

Meanwhile, Melaka student affairs and welfare officer here, Muhd Anwar Idris when contacted said the two students left for Malaysia at 2.30pm (local time) Wednesday on the last flight under a voluntary evacuation programme undertaken by the Malaysian government.

He said the two hailed from Melaka and Sarawak respectively and were excellent students at their university.

"InsyaAllah (God willing), they will return here to continue their studies.

"We are also in the process of appointing a lawyer to represent them at the court hearing on a date to be fixed by the court," he added.
