Manchester United 'make €100m bid for Thomas Muller'

Munich-based publication Sport1 claim that Manchester United have had a €100m bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller turned down.

Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal spoke about a potential surprise move for a forward player earlier this week and if these reports are true Muller would surely be the player he was talking about.

25-year-old Muller has been at Bayern Munich for 15 years having joined the club as a youth player back in 2000, winning four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League since breaking into the first-team.

The Red Devils have signed Bastian Schweinsteiger already this summer it appears but Muller would be an even more surprising addition from the German champions if it were to happen.

Sport 1 claim that Manchester United have already had an offer of €82m (£57m) turned down but that they have returned with a bid of €100m, only for that to be rejected by Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as well.

Unless the player demands a move from his boyhood club it is difficult to see Bayern Munich letting him go, especially as he is seen by many as the jewel in their crown.

Manchester United reporter Stuart Mathieson at the Manchester Evening News has also acted quickly to play down the rumours, saying that no bid has been made by the club.

Muller would be an outstanding addition to any side in the world but it's hard to see why Bayern Munich would agree to sell him, even with an offer as big as €100m. He is a club hero and one of their most important players, plus they are in no need of money.

With reliable local sources pouring cold water on the story, it seems doubtful that it's true and even more unlikely that Muller will be following former team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford this summer.
