Gerakan launches Facebook account 'Save Malaysia, No Hudud'

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) has launched a Facebook account dubbed, 'Save Malaysia, No Hudud' to make a clear stand on resolutely rejecting the implementation of hudud in the country.

Its secretary-general, Liang Teck Meng said the Facebook page would serve as a channel for delivering information and views on hudud, and a platform for discussion on the issue.

"It (Facebook page) will be the best platform for us to engage with the public, as well as express views on hudud," he told reporters after launching the party's Facebook page at Menara PGRM here Saturday.

Also present were Gerakan vice-president Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai and its women's wing chief, Datuk Tan Lian Hoe.

Liang said the party respected Islam, but the hudud law was not suitable for implementation in the multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-cultures of the country.

"Gerakan has made its stand very clearly. We are against PAS’ hudud (law)...its implementation in the country is inappropriate.

"We do not agree to hudud implemented because it is contrary to the constitution," he added.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob was reported to have said the state would table a private bill on the law in Parliament, earliest by next month.

However, the PAS' move has been severely criticised, not only from non-Muslim-based parties within the Barisan Nasional, but also from its allies in Pakatan Rakyat and DAP.
