World's 'ugliest woman' buried in Mexico

Amazing, isn't it!

World's 'ugliest woman' buried in Mexico 150 years after death

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The "ugliest woman in the world" was buried in her native northern Mexico on Tuesday, more than 150 years after her death and a tragic life spent exhibited as a freak of nature at circuses around the world.

Born in Mexico in 1834, Julia Pastrana suffered from hypertrichosis and gingival hyperplasia, diseases that gave her copious facial hair and a thick-set jaw. These features led to her being called a "bear woman" or "ape woman".

During the mid-1850s, Pastrana met Theodore Lent, a U.S. impresario who toured the singing and dancing Pastrana at freak shows across the United States and Europe before marrying her.

In 1860, Pastrana died in Moscow after giving birth to Lent's son, who inherited his mother's condition. The son died a few days later, and Lent then toured with the mother and son's embalmed remains. After changing hands over the ensuing decades, both bodies ended up at the University of Oslo in Norway.

"Imagine the aggression and cruelty of humankind she had to face, and how she overcame it. It's a very dignified story," said Mario Lopez, the governor of Sinaloa state who lobbied to have her remains repatriated to her home state for burial.

"When I heard about this Sinaloan woman, I said, there's no way she can be left locked away in a warehouse somewhere," he said.

Crowds flocked to the small town of Sinaloa de Leyva on Tuesday to pay their respects to Pastrana, who was buried in a white coffin garlanded with white roses.

"The mass was beautiful," said New York-based Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata, who has led a nearly decade-long campaign to have Pastrana returned to Mexico for a proper Catholic burial. "I was very moved. In all these years I've never felt so full of different emotions." (Reporting by Gabriel Stargardter; Editing by Simon Gardner and Christopher Wilson)

Topless women in Paris church

Look what's happening around us. The world is getting old!

Activists from the Femen women's rights movement protest in Notre Dame cathedral, Paris on Feb 12, 2013

Topless women fete pope's resignation in Paris cathedral

Eight feminists flashed their breasts in the heart of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral on Tuesday to celebrate Pope Benedict XVI's shock resignation announcement.

The members of the Femen movement entered the Gothic cathedral dressed in long coats which they whipped off inside while ringing three bells near the altar.

"Pope no more!" they cried. "No more homophobe" and "Bye bye Benedict!"

Scandalised visitors voiced their disapproval.

"This is a sacred place, you can't strip here," said a Frenchwoman.

The Femen women's power group has been making headlines since 2010 for topless feminist, pro-democracy and anti-corruption protests in Russia, Ukraine and London. The protestors were dragged out of the cathedral by security but remained outside for some time shouting "In gay we trust" and "Get out homophobe."

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls and Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe condemned the action. Calling it a "useless provocation," Valls expressed his "support to French Catholics who could have been offended by this rude gesture."

Delanoe expressed his "sadness" over what happened.

"I reprove an action which caricatures the fine struggle for female-male equality and needlessly shocks many believers," Delanoe said.

Prisoner caught by ringtone in his anus

You cannot hide anything anywhere nowadays. Not even in your anus!

Sri Lanka prisoner caught by his ringtone

The 58-year-old convict had to be admitted to the national hospital in Colombo where doctors later retrieved the handset from his rectum.

"The man had concealed the phone inside his person," the official said, asking not to be named.

"Unfortunately for him, the phone rang at the wrong time and guards knew he had a phone at the wrong end."

He said the man was in hospital for two days but was discharged and sent back to prison Friday after the mobile phone was taken out.

The prisoner is serving a 10-year term for theft at the high security Welikada jail in the capital.

Dia menukar jantina tiga tahun lalu.

- Agensi

Orang mati naik pangkat

- Bernama

Would you like Mopane Worms for lunch?

Interesting!

What is considered disgusting in other parts of the world is a delicacy to others. This is what you'll find in Africa.

That's how big the mopane worm is.

Collect and process in large scale

Fried with onion, ready for consumption. Wanna go for lunch now?

About Mopane Worms

Mopane worms are large edible caterpillar found in much of Africa.

A mopane worm hatches and as it grows, it sheds skin 4 times in its five larval stages, after which the mopane worm is considered most suitable for harvesting. Otherwise it goes into pupal stage and transforms into giant moth, commonly called emperor moth due to it size.

The worms can be eaten dry, as crunchy as potato chips, or cooked and drenched in sauce to enhance the taste.

The dual-display YotaPhone

The YotaPhone which was showcased at the 2013 CES in Las Vegas will be available in the second half of this year.

It is a dual-screen (less than 10mm thick) device that's half Android smartphone and half ebook reader. On one side is a standard full-colour screen, but flip the phone and you have an electronic paper display, the kind that is found in e-readers.

I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea, but fiddling with the slab should give an idea.

The YotaPhone screen is Colour on one side and Grey-scale e-reader on another.

The YotaPhone Specifications

Processor.           : Qualcomm's 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus
Memory              : 2GB RAM
Screen size          : 4.3 inch, not bad.
Resolution           : 1,280 x 820
Thickness            : 9 mm, about the same thickness of the iPhone 4S
Connectivity        : 4G LTE, and NFC
Camera               : 12 MP, front camera 1.3 MP
Video                  : 1080p HD video
Storage capacity  : 32GB and 64GB
Expansion slot     : Not available. Reminds me of the iPhone.
Weight                :139g

The reason for the grey-scale screen? To preserve battery life. Well, we'll just have to see about that.

Malaysia takes top spot: Bribery Table

We all want to make headlines, but not for the wrong reason!

Despite all this, I still love my country and hope it will make amend one day. Soon, I hope.

The Wall Street Journal.

Source: The Wall Street Journal, December 2012.

Despite Malaysia’s high-profile anticorruption crusade, half of the corporate executives surveyed by a global corruption watchdog believe that competitors have obtained business through bribery, underscoring the hard task ahead for Prime Minister Najib Razak‘s government in weeding out graft.

Transparency International said Malaysia scored worst in the 2012 Bribe Payers Survey. It asked about 3,000 executives from 30 countries whether they had lost a contract in the past year because competitors paid a bribe—and in Malaysia, 50% said yes. Second on the dubious honor roll was Mexico, at 48%.

A Transparency International survey suggests businesses in Malaysia must navigate a haze of corruption. Japan ranked as the world’s least-corrupt place to do business, with just 2% of respondents saying they had lost out due to bribery; Malaysia’s neighbor Singapore was second-cleanest, at 9%. Even Indonesia, with a long-standing reputation for corruption, fared better than more-developed Malaysia: Southeast Asia’s largest economy came in at 47%.

By comparison, 27% of respondents in China said they thought bribes had cost them business.

World Press Freedom Index 2013 questionable?

So, you are saying that if the finding is not in your favour, it is biased?

Come on. Take it positively. At the very least, it gives an indication that there's something not right in the media freedom in Malaysia.

At the worst: The ranking of 145 out of 179 is the truth!

Politically motivated? Give me a break!
