Arsenal run amok against Liverpool to move up to second

Arsenal blitzed Liverpool in eight dramatic minutes en route to a 4-1 win in the Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

The game was effectively over as a contest at half-time after a flurry of Arsenal goals just before the break.

Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez grabbed the goals in a stunning eight-minute spell before the interval - strikes which broke the visitors' hearts following earlier two misses by the Reds.

Jordan Henderson cut the arrears with a 76th-minute penalty, but Olivier Giroud added gloss to an already polished performance with an injury-time fourth.

Arsenal could have been two up in the opening ten minutes through chances for Sanchez and Santi Cazorla as the Liverpool defence fell to pieces.

Liverpool should have taken the lead soon after, with Raheem Sterling first drawing a good save from David Ospina, then unable to get a foot to a clumsily-overhit pass from Lazar Markovic while free and clear in the box.

Instead, Arsenal opened the scoring on the 37th minute with a beautiful goal from Bellerin, stepping through the back line delicately and curling a shot past Simon Mignolet.

Ozil's magnificent free kick fizzed past Mignolet three minutes later, and Sanchez got the goal his efforts deserved in first-half added time, tipping the ball over the goalkeeper's head.

Bellerin was involved in Liverpool's consolation goal, giving away the penalty that Henderson converted, with a foot in front of Raheem Sterling, but didn't receive the second yellow card that some observers thought he warranted.

Emre Can, however, did, catching substitute Danny Welbeck very late and receiving the second booking in the 84th minute.

Olivier Giroud restored the three-goal advantage in the dying seconds, with a well-taken solo goal, lashed left-footed past Mignolet.
