Manchester United hold on against West Ham after Rooney red

Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 2 (Rooney 5, Van Persie 22) West Ham 1 (Sakho 37)

Wayne Rooney scored and was sent off as Manchester United won their second game of the season with a 2-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford.

After an embarrassing 5-3 defeat against Leicester City in their previous match, United started brightly when Wayne Rooney clipped in a well taken shot from Rafael’s cross. A minute later, defensive worries resurfaced when Daley Blind’s backpass was intercepted by Enner Valencia, who fired embarrassingly wide. Halfway through the half, Robin van Persie drilled a shot into the far corner. Diafra Sakho pulled one back for West Ham after United failed to clear a corner.

In the second half, Rooney was sent off after kicking out in frustration at Stewart Downing - a foolish late challenge that earned a deserved red card and three-match ban.

The 19-year-old Paddy McNair impressed in his first game for the club, looking calmer than any of the injured central defenders have this season, and United’s midfield offered more protection with Blind and Ander Herrera covering plenty of ground. In the absence of Rooney, United held on well against West Ham’s pressure.

  1. Well done Reds. We truly deserved the victory. Yes, McNair was impressive last night. Good future ahead of him.
