Chelsea pull clear at top after beating Newcastle 2 - 0

Premier League, Stamford Bridge - Chelsea 2 (Oscar 43, Costa 59) Newcastle 0

Chelsea overcame a sluggish start to beat Newcastle 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, going two points clear of Manchester City who drew 1-1 at Everton.

Newcastle drastically improved from recent showings, with Remy Cabella appearing to have finally adjusted to the Premier League in an excellent display of close control and incisive running. His skill tempted Cesar Azpilicueta into a lunge that injured his groin, and allowed Moussa Sissoko the space to run at down the right wing before hitting the bar.

Newcastle grew in confidence in the half, with Chelsea lethargic until the 43rd minute, when Willian took a quick corner to find Branislav Ivanovic in the box, who pulled the ball to the back post where Oscar could tap in unmarked.

Chelsea made it two just before the hour mark after a brilliant backheeled assist for Diego Costa from Oscar, and Chelsea held on for an ultimately routine victory.
