Merkel plays history teacher on Berlin Wall anniversary

Merkel plays history teacher on Berlin Wall anniversary

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, campaigning for a third term, filled in as a school history teacher Tuesday on the 52nd anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall.

Merkel, who is leading in opinion polls ahead of next month's general election, returned from a two-week holiday to sit in on the class of sixth formers in east Berlin.

In 2005 she became the first chancellor who grew up in the communist east and she shared with pupils a few memories of the day when the East German authorities closed the border.

"It was 1961, the same year I started school," she said as she arrived at the Heinrich Schliemann secondary school in the now upscale district of Prenzlauer Berg.

"My favourite subjects back then were languages, German and maths."

Merkel, 59, visited at the invitation of a youth magazine and accepted bouquets of flowers from excited pupils, who posed for smart-phone pictures with the chancellor in front of the school.

Wearing a teal blazer, Merkel signed her name in chalk on the blackboard next to a map of Berlin before beginning her class.

It was her first public appearance since her summer break in the Tyrolean Alps with less than six weeks to go until the September 22 vote, and apparently designed to capitalise on her enormous personal popularity.

Reporters were not granted access to the lecture but Merkel answered a few questions before speaking to students.

The childless Merkel, who said she had never taught before and hadn't been in a classroom in decades, swotted up on her Cold War history before giving the lesson.

"It's quite a difference between having personal experiences and teaching facts," said Merkel, a trained physicist.

She is to hit the campaign trail in earnest this week with a rally in the business capital Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Her main opponent, Peer Steinbrueck of the Social Democrats, has seen his bid marred by gaffes and his party is trailing Merkel's conservatives by about 16 points.

This month he angered many east Germans by saying Merkel lacked a "passion for Europe" because of her upbringing under communism.

He will speak on Saturday at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German unity after its long division.

On the morning of August 13, 1961, East Berliners woke to find soldiers had blocked off the streets, cut off rail links and begun building a wall of barbed wire and cemented paving stones which over the years, in Berlin, grew in height and complexity over 155 kilometres (96 miles).

East German authorities sealed the border to the West to stem a mass exodus from the communist system.

At least 136 people are known to have died at the Wall before it fell in a bloodless revolution on November 9, 1989.

Historians suggest that the overall figure of those killed while fleeing from all of East Germany stands at between 600 and 700 although victims' groups say the number is higher still.

Disney reaches for the skies with "Planes"

Disney reaches for the skies with

As a lifelong aviation enthusiast and qualified pilot, filmmaker Klay Hall was the logical choice when Disney was seeking a director for its latest animated offering, "Planes."

A spin-off of Pixar's phenomenally successful "Cars" franchise, "Planes" was initially envisioned as a video project, released through the Disney Toon Studios division.

However, Disney took the rare step of giving the movie a theatrical release, confident the film, which opens in the United States this week, has potential to be a commercial success at the box office.

The sky-high hopes for the project are a testament to the work of Hall, a pilot who comes from a long line of aviators. Both Hall's father, a former US Navy pilot, and grandfather were fliers.

As a child growing up in California, Hall would accompany his father to a local airfield to watch planes taking off and landing, often sketching what he saw.

Decades later, Hall's affinity with aircraft meant the director was in his element as he got to work on "Planes."

While the project bears obvious similarities to "Cars," Disney's legendary animation chief John Lasseter -- who directed both "Cars" and "Cars 2" -- encouraged Hall to "create his own universe."

"John told me: 'Cars is established, we've got that whole world. That's all good. Learn from that world, learn what we did over there as far as personality and animation and then forget about it ... I want you now to go out and create a whole new world, a whole new universe,'" Hall told AFP in a recent interview.

"The aesthetics are the same. We have eyes and the characters talk, and it's a charming design of a vehicle. But that's where the similarities stop," the director added.

"Planes" follows the adventures of a feisty crop-dusting plane called Dusty who dreams of competing in a prestigious round-the-world race.

"I always loved the underdog stories, the little guy, the weak guy able to rise above. I think it's a classic story, it's universal," Hall said.

"I also like the idea that he's built one way but deep down he feels he can do more."

Hall paid particular attention to the mechanics of his characters' flying sequences.

"One of the hardest things is to make airplanes fly and make their flight believable," he said. "It took us at least six months to crack that code. We had aviation experts in, flight experts and consultants."

The other main challenge was deciding how to "humanize" the planes at the center of the action.

"A car is on the ground. Everyone knows how a car rolls and works -- they have a big windshield for the eyes, a big grill area for the mouth," he said.

"We have wings, that are constantly in the way, we have little windshields, the mouth is on the bottom. Then we have the propellers, always in the way of the camera. Tons of challenges," he added.

Hans Isaac kecewa kutipan filem Lemak Kampung Santan

Krisis nuklear Jepun belum berakhir

Krisis nuklean Jepun belum berakhir

- Astro Awani

Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas on board for 'The Expendables 3'

Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas on board for 'The Expendables 3'

After giving headliner Bruce Willis the boot and replacing him with Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone has recruited two additional stars for the next episode of the ongoing story.

Mel Gibson has been keeping a low profile in Hollywood over the past few years, but he seems to be ready to move back into the limelight. Already in the cast of the next Robert Rodriguez film ("Machete Kills"), the Australian actor has also taken a role in "The Expendables 3." Sylvester Stallone, the main driving force behind the Expendables franchise, confirmed the news via social media on Friday.

A few days earlier, Sly announced that he was no longer counting on Bruce Willis and had snagged Harrison Ford instead.

In the third installment of the "Expendables" saga, Mel Gibson will play a villain determined to undermine Barney Ross (Stallone) and his crew. The actor who famously portrayed William Wallace in "Braveheart" will join a cast that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Mickey Rourke, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan and of course Sylvester Stallone.

Last week, Lionsgate confirmed another big name for the credits of the upcoming film, Antonio Banderas. The Spanish actor will also share the billing with Mel Gibson in "Machete Kills."

In a press release, the film’s producers noted that casting negotiations will continue until the last minute, suggesting that the list of stars in the credits could grow yet again. "The Expendables 3" will begin shooting at the end of this summer for a release date of August 15, 2014 in the US.

Meet the world's biggest mega-yacht

The Emirati royal family has dethroned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in the race to own the world's biggest mega-yacht, Yachts France magazine has reported.
The 180-metre (590-foot) "Azzam" built for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, the president of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, has ousted Abramovich's 163.5-metre (536-foot) "Eclipse" from the top of the yacht league table, the magazine said in its annual survey of the world's 100 biggest yachts.
After holding the top spot for three years, the "Eclipse" was pushed into second place by the "Azzam" after its delivery this year by German builder Lurssen Yachts.
The floating palace features six bridges and a 550-square-metre (6,000-square-foot) lounge decorated in the opulent turn-of-the-century Empire style, the magazine reported.
Despite its size, the behemoth can also move at a top speed of 31.5 knots (58 kilometres per hour/36 miles per hour), making it the third-fastest yacht among the top 100.
The magazine did not divulge its price but previous media reports suggested the "Azzam" cost between $400 million and $600 million (300-450 million euros) to build.
The race to build larger mega-yachts has been intense in recent years, with industry experts saying the trend is for ever-bigger and more luxurious ships.
The yachts are often available for charter -- at costs of several million dollars per week -- and frequently navigate along France's Cote d'Azur between Monaco and Saint-Tropez.
Of the 100 top yachts profiled by the magazine, 31 were owned by people from the Middle East, 19 by Russians and 17 by Americans.
Among this year's eight new entries to the top 100 was also Steve Jobs' "Venus" -- a Philippe Starck-designed 78-metre (256-foot) superyacht ordered by the Apple co-founder before his death in 2011. It ranked 88th.
The Dutch-built yacht, which features a control panel made up of an array of iMac computers, was only allowed to leave Amsterdam in December after Jobs's estate paid a deposit to resolve a dispute with Starck over payment for the design.
The top-ranked American yacht on the list was the 138-metre (453-foot) "Rising Sun" owned by music and film magnate David Geffen, at 10th.
Director Steven Spielberg's 85-metre (279-foot) "Seven Seas" was 54th on the list.
The biggest British-owned yacht on the list was the 91-metre (299-foot) Nahlin, belonging to inventor and entrepreneur James Dyson, which ranked 36th.
