5 charging Myths & 1 fact

Iimage: Sporacle

Do these captions sound familiar to you?:
"Don't use your phone while it's charging,"
"Don't leave it plugged in overnight"
"Always let it die completely"

WRT battery life, there are many little rules for what you can and can't do with your smartphone. While plenty of real rules exist, there are several rumored ones you can simply ignore. Let's look at the 5 phone charging myths (as debunked by mashable) I read this while sitting at the airport waiting to board the plane:

Myth 1: Using off-brand chargers destroys batteries.

The truth: Off-brand chargers, while not optimal, are fine.

It's knockoffs you should avoid. Don't go for cheap brand knockoff chargers when you can at least purchase inexpensive, off-brand chargers (as long as they're made by legitimate retailers. Some experiment to of comparison: knockoffs and off-brand models.

Myth 2: You shouldn't use your phone while it charges.

The truth: Use it all you want, as long as you're not using a disreputable third-party charger.

There are scary reasons behind this myth. People believe that using a phone while charging will make the phone explode, or electrocute the user. That actually happened to a Chinese flight attendant named Ma Ailun in July 2013, when she used her iPhone 4 while it was charging.

However, reports say it's because Ailun was using a third-party charger, not an original Apple charger. If you're using the manufacturer-approved charger and battery, you should be fine.

Myth 3: Charging your phone overnight kills the battery.

The truth: Your phone is smarter than you think. Once it's fully juiced up, it knows to stop charging. That means the battery isn't even in use at all.

However, that doesn't mean you should be charging your phone all night, every night. You wouldn't fill a cup with water if it was already full, would you? Your battery life will last longer if you keep your phone charged between 40% and 80%.

Myth 4: You don't need to turn your phone off - ever.

The truth: Your phone may be a machine, but it still needs to take a few breaks. An Apple Genius said that in order to maximize battery life, you should turn off your phone from time to time, especially when you go to bed at night.

At the very least, Apple experts recommend turning your phone off once a week in order to preserve battery life.Turning off your phone is important for Android devices as well. A simple reboot can help restore battery life.

Myth 5: Don't charge your phone until it's completely dead.

The truth: It's better to charge your phone every day than to do a "deep charge" from time to time.

Lithium-ion batteries, like the kind used in Samsung and Apple products fare better when they're charged. If you constantly let them drain to 0%, they become unstable. Your battery has a finite number of charge cycles, and every time it fully dies, that's another cycle out the window.

Alright, okay, at lease we have one fact about phone charging:-

Fact: Heat will ruin a battery.

The truth: This is absolutely true. Heat and tech don't generally go hand-in-hand, and that's no different with phone batteries. Lithium-ion batteries heat themselves, and get hotter while they're being charged. Cold weather can also have a negative impact on a phone's life, and a cold battery will die faster than usual in low temperatures.

Your phone will be safe if you keep it within its recommended temperatures; Apple says 32o F (0o C)is the lowest recommended temperature for an iPhone's environment. Samsung, on the other hand, guarantees its phones can function anywhere between -4 (-20o C) and 122o F.

Supermoon, the biggest and brightest of 2014

Technically theres only one supermoon a year, and this is it -FilePic-

On Sunday, Aug. 10, we’ll be treated to a special cosmological treat. The year’s biggest and brightest full moon will rise.

Technically there’s only one supermoon a year, and this is it. The term refers to the time when the moon, which orbits Earth in a slightly elliptical trajectory, is at the absolute closest it can get while also being full.

Other full moons have come very close (one already this year, with another coming on Sept. 9) and unofficially been granted the supermoon title, but Sunday’s will be ever so slightly more magnificent.

“The size difference between even the dimmest and brightest full moon is only a bit more than 10 percent,” Shawn Domagal-Goldman, research space scientist at NASA Goddard, said, “So the difference between other “supermoons” and this one isn’t huge.”

But for him, Domagal-Goldman said, the event is a great excuse to take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the moon, something so often ignored in hectic day-to-day life.

Lunar events should be especially exciting to urbanites. “Normally, when cool stuff is happening in the night sky, we miss it because of the light pollution,” Domagal-Goldman said.

“But there’s no such thing as too much light pollution to see the moon. All you need is nighttime and a clear sky. If you live in a city and want to share in the awe of the cosmos, this is the astronomical event for you.”

To get those clear skies, Domagal-Goldman recommends going out right at moonrise (which you can find the time of here) when there’s less likely to be cloud cover.

And some optical tricks will help your viewing experience at that time, too. “It’s going to look biggest and brightest to us when it’s right next to the horizon,”

Domagal-Goldman said. When the moon is right next to things that we’re familiar with, like trees and buildings, it looks much bigger than when surrounded by other astronomical bodies like stars.

Condom law puts Los Angeles porn directors out of mood

During that year, 480 permits to film porn in the region were granted, only to plummet to 40 in 2013 and 20 so far in 2014.

LOS ANGELES: The porn industry in Los Angeles has been on the down-and-out ever since a law requiring actors wear condoms sent filmmakers scrambling to find less restrictive work conditions.

The regulation, meant to encourage condom use as an effective tool in the fight against AIDS, has seen the number of pornography productions in free fall since its passage at the end of 2012.

During that year, 480 permits to film porn in the region were granted, only to plummet to 40 in 2013 and 20 so far in 2014, said nonprofit FilmL.A., which issues the go-aheads.

"We haven't produced a movie in LA County since Measure B was passed in November 2012," said Steven Hirsch, founder and co-chairman of pornography production company Vivid Entertainment, using the statute's technical name.

He emphasized that the county "is the only place where people are required to wear a condom" on a pornography set.

Hirsch believed that a system in place for years -- which requires actors to take an HIV test before taking on a porn role -- "worked extremely well."

If a test came back positive, the actor couldn't be in a film. During 10 years, not one person became infected from porn work, Hirsch said.

"The performers don't want to use condoms -- they feel safe and comfortable (without them). The fans don't want to see condoms," Hirsch said.

- 10,000 jobs involved -

The law is driving porn productions to nearby counties, other states like Nevada or even abroad, Hirsch said.

Moves have caused increased budgets for productions in a sector already hard-hit by the availability of free porn on the Internet, he said, adding that an appeal against the law has been filed in court.

Stuart Waldman, president of the Valley Industry & Commerce Association in San Fernando said pornography is "a huge industry" for his region.

Porn movies account for more than 10,000 jobs and close to $6 billion in income in the San Fernando Valley, he said.

While actors from X-rated films are known to have contracted HIV -- five cases were reported in September 2013 -- Waldman said the individuals likely contracted the disease off the movie set.

"These are people who are probably having unprotected, unsafe sex in their private lives," Waldman said.

Michael Weinstein, president of the nonprofit AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said the law is not just about preventing HIV and AIDS.

"There have been thousands of cases of STDs over last 10 years" in the industry, he said.

And he said he expected the measure to be upheld in court, even if it is already being flouted by people filming in Los Angeles illegally.

He noted that porn production company Wicked Pictures, pornography producer Axel Braun and others already took the leap and make all their actors use condoms.

And the threat of a production exodus to other countries doesn't faze the AIDS activist, who compared any flight abroad to similar scenarios in other industries.

"You can manufacture in unsafe conditions in Bangladesh, but that doesn't mean we do that here," he said. - AFP

Typhoon Halong rips through western Japan

The strong typhoon hit Japan's largest and most populous island at around 10:00 am (0100 GMT) near the city of Ako on the southwest coast.

TOKYO: Typhoon Halong slammed into western Japan on Sunday, making landfall on the main Honshu island as the weather agency issued its highest alert.

The strong typhoon hit Japan's largest and most populous island at around 10:00 am (0100 GMT) near the city of Ako on the southwest coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Packing winds of up to 162 kilometres per hour, the typhoon barrelled in to the smaller western island of Shikoku earlier Sunday, with huge waves battering the coast.

On Honshu, the weather agency maintained its highest warning -- meaning a threat to life and the risk of massive damage -- for Mie prefecture, some 300 kilometres (190 miles) west of Tokyo, warning that "unprecedented" torrential rain in the area could trigger massive landslides or major floods.

Storms and torrential rain earlier this week left one dead and 25 injured, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said.

Local authorities, mainly in western Japan, issued evacuation advisories to more than 1.6 million people in total, while a wide area on Shikoku island was submerged, NHK said.

At least 143 flights were to be cancelled on Sunday due to the typhoon, which came just as Japan began its annual "Obon" summer holiday, NHK said. On Saturday some 470 flights were grounded.

Typhoon Halong was moving north-northeast at 30 kilometres per hour, the weather agency said.

Halong comes a month after Typhoon Neoguri killed several people left a trail of destruction in southern Japan.

Last weekend a man drowned in a raging river, while more than half a million people were advised to evacuate as heavy rain from Typhoon Nakri lashed the country. - AFP

Dua pegawai sukan minta isu Sukan Komanwel dihentikan

KUALA LUMPUR: Dua pegawai sukan negara meminta isu menuding jari susulan prestasi hambar Sukan Komanwel Glasgow 2014 dihentikan.

- Agensi
