Majority still say racial tolerance is still low among Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR:  Is racial tolerance among Malaysians still low? This was the question posed by Astro Awani in a poll today. Before we go into the results of the poll, let us look into, what is racial tolerance?

Racial tolerance is not having an objection to anyone based on an individual’s race or religion and this is important to ensure no misunderstanding when it comes to race. In this modern day an age, it is somehow clear that co-existence with other racial groups is still not as prevalent as it should be.

Respecting the diverse opinions, race and culture is important to ensure the harmony and peace in a society. But, why is tolerance important?

Tolerance is important as it leads to a peaceful co-existence between different people and ensures a social, economic and emotional prosperity for everyone.

Now going back to the poll, here is what you the readers had to say to this question posed: Is racial tolerance among Malaysians still low? A total of 78.57 readers agreed that it was low while, only 7.14% disagreed. The balance which is 14.29% meanwhile where neutral, where they neither agreed nor disagreed.

So how do we, the people living in a modern society, strive for a better racial tolerance level? Many would agree that racial tolerance should be fostered from a young age. Thus, it is important that parents and the society as a whole be an example for the younger generation as they grow up learning to live in a multi-racial country.

Others methods are by speaking out against racial intolerance (in a proper manner) and to encourage interfaith collaborations between different races. With respect and racial tolerance in mind the world will be a better place to live in and enjoy.
