KIT SIANG: Where is IGP's directives? - File Photo
KUALA LUMPUR: Gelang Patah MP and Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang has questioned the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s silence over a Facebook post by Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who had allegedly called for Malays to boycott Chinese enterprises.
Ismail in a Facebook post had called on Chinese businessmen to lower prices following the drop of fuel prices which took effect Sunday (Feb 1).
“If a PAS or PKR leader had called on Malay consumers to boycott Chinese businesses to lower prices or a DAP leader had called on non-Malay customers to boycott Malay businesses to lower prices, Khalid would immediately tweet directives to his police officers to investigate the DAP or PR leaders under Sedition Act or other laws,” Lim said in a statement.
Lim also expressed his shock following’s Ismail statement and called it “callous, insensitive and racist.”
He added that the issue goes beyond political parties, race and religion and questioned why a “rabid racislist ... is qualified to continue as a Minister of government of a plural nation.”
In the statement, Lim also cited the concern expressed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah two weeks ago that he had never been more concerned about race and religious relations in the country since ascending to the throne 57 years ago in 1958.
In a Facebook posting, Ismail said the people would presumably be upset towards the government if prices of goods are not reduced.
“The consumers have the biggest power. If the Malays boycott Chinese businesses who are the minorities then they do not have any other choice but to lower goods prices,” said Ismail.
The statement continued by urging the Malays to open their eyes as purchasing powers lie in their hands as consumers.
