KUALA LUMPUR: United States President Barack Obama will visit Malaysia in April, AFP reported, Wednesday.
The report, quoting the White House, added that apart from Malaysia, Obama will also be visiting Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
The visit is intended to quell doubts in the region about Obama's strategy of rebalancing US power to Asia, following the cancellation of his last planned trip there in October for domestic political reasons.
Obama had postponed his much-awaited visit to Malaysia in Oct last year following the shutdown of the administrative operations in the US.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who received a telephone call from Obama about the postponement in Oct, said he understood the internal problems faced by the President and the challenges Obama faced in raising the National Debt Ceiling on Oct 17.
Najib said Obama had expressed his intention to visit Malaysia at a date to be determined later.
The US President was scheduled to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2013 in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 11. That would have been his first visit to Malaysia.
The White House Office of Management and Budget ordered government agencies in October to begin shutting down after Congress failed to find a compromise on a government spending bill.
