Number of flood victims in Beaufort rises to 2,391


BEAUFORT: The number of flood victims evacuated to relief centres here has increased to 2,391 on Monday morning as the water level in Padas river rose to 9.20 metres, surpassing the 8.70-metre danger level.

According to the spokesman of Beaufort flood operations room, the victims, comprising 700 families, were currently taking shelter at six relief centres in the district.

The relief centres are at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Beaufort 3, which houses 781 victims, SMK Gadong (235), Kampung Kukut community hall (660), Dewan Baru Beaufort (607), Dewan Lumadan (98) and the surau in Kampung Sungai Bukau (10), he said.

Earlier Monday, Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin also visited and presented flood aid to the victims.

The flood situation in Tenom, however, had improved and all relief centres in the district had been closed.
