Petition calling for Anwar's release on White House website

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy (II) saga has reached greater dizzying heights.

Yesterday, the United States issued a statement expressing its ‘deep disappointment’ with the conviction citing that the decision to prosecute the 67-year-old leader and the conduct of his trial raised heavy concerns about the rule of law and the transparency of the judicial system in Malaysia.

Today, an online petition urging the release of Anwar's release has caught the attention of civil societies from around the globe.

The petition, "Make the release of Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim from prison a top priority for US policy toward Malaysia" comes across a s call to support to release him.

The petition calling for the release of former Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which was posted on The White House's website. It needs a total of 10,000 signatures to get the attention of the White House. Photo: http://petitions.whitehouse.gov.

The petition was addressed to the Obama Administration is seen as a call for the President of the United States Barack Obama to secure the freedom of the 67-year-old politician who is currently serving his five-years’ jail sentence at the Sungai Buloh prison in Selangor.

To date, the total signatures stand at of 8,909 and it needs 91,091 more signatures (for a total of 100,000 signatures) to get the attention of the White House. The number continues to increase by the minute.
