FA Cup fourth round replay, Old Trafford – Manchester United 3 (Mata 25, Rojo 32, Wilson 73) Cambridge United 0
There was to be no magical cup upset at Old Trafford as Manchester United cruised past Cambridge United 3-0 and into the last-16 of the FA Cup.
First half goals from Juan Mata and Marcos Rojo gave the hosts control of the fourth-round replay and James Wilson’s second half strike extinguished any lingering hopes of a shock result.
However, it might have been so different, Tom Elliott missing a gilt-edged chance for the visitors inside the first minute of the match.
United, in search of a first FA Cup in 11 years, will face Preston North End in the last 16.
The hosts took the lead after 25 minutes when Mata spread the ball wide to Angel Di Maria and then got himself into the box to flick home from Marouane Fellaini’s nod-down.
The lead was doubled less than ten minutes later when Rojo headed home his first Manchester United goal from a delightfully dinked Robin van Persie cross.
Then substitute Wilson put the game to bed after 73 minutes when he picked the ball up on the edge of the box, shifted onto his left foot and fired a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner.
Kick-off was pushed back to 8.05pm as the 7,000 Cambridge fans were held up on their way to the ground and by 8.06pm the visitors had wasted their one glorious chance. Daley Blind was robbed of possession and Elliott was put clear through on goal but he could only stroke the ball onto the post.
