Tan and his girlfriend Vivian Lee, 25, were charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court under the Sedition Act for insulting the Islam and the month of Ramadan in the Facebook website.
KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial blogger Alvin Tan who is believed to be hiding in the United States has challenged Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to revoke Tan’s international passport.
In his Facebook posting, Tan said the authorities are always so eager to react and catch him.
“I'm just one of literally thousands of voices on the internet criticizing UMNO. I really don't pose a political threat whatsoever AT ALL. Of all people, they choose to single me out,” he wrote today.
He said it was mind-boggling to think that his Facebook rants often become national news.
Tan said instead of taking action against him, the authorities have so far only issued threats.
“When you make threats and fail to follow up on them, your credibility dies away little by little. I'm so embarrassed to even say that I'm technically still Malaysian,” he added.
Ahmad Zahid had earlier today said theHome Ministry will revoke the international passport of Tan, whose real name is Tan Jye Yee.
He said he move to revoke his passport, would be based on the provisions under the Immigration Act.
"We can do it as soon as possible. In fact it can be done by this Monday," he said.
It is believed the government’s move to revoke his passport stemmed from Tan’s criticism of the Selangor Sultan for revoking Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Datuk Seri title.
Tan, citing the case of Hindraf leader P.Waythamoorthy whose passport was also revoked by the government in 2007, is confident that his application for political asylum in the US would be expedited if his passport is revoked.
On July 18, 2013, Tan and his girlfriend Vivian Lee, 25, were charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court under the Sedition Act for insulting the Islam and the month of Ramadan in the Facebook website.
Subsequently the court last Aug 22 issued a warrant of arrest after he failed to attend a mention of the case.
