BUKIT KAYU HITAM (Dec 25): A Universiti Utara Malaysia student was killed when the car he was travelling in with his three friends was smashed by ply wood that fell off a lorry last night.

The victim succumbed to his injuries and died on the spot in the horrific incident at Km0.5 of the North-South Expressway, in front of a Duty Free Zone Complex here at 9pm.

A police spokesman said the driver of the lorry bearing a Thailand vehicle registration number and laden with ply woods lost control of the vehicle before it skidded and landed on a road divider.

This caused the lorry to become unstable before all the ply wood fell off the lorry and smashed the Perodua Kancil.

The victim, in his 20s, was sitting on the rear passenger seat. One of his friends was severely injured and is being treated at a hospital here.

The two other passengers inside the car escaped the incident with minor injuries.

It was learnt that the driver of the lorry fled the scene after the accident. Police were making efforts to track him down to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
