MCMC blocked more than 3,000 websites for various offences

KUALA LUMPUR: From 2016 until January this year, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked 3,110 websites for various offences, including publishing content which could jeopardise public order.

According to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, of this number, 2,837 websites which had pornographic, disgusting, false and threatening content were blocked under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Other websites were for gambling, prostitution, cheating, piracy, unregistered medicines and false products," the ministry said in a written reply to Datuk Ikmal Hisham Abdul Azizi (BN-Tanah Merah) at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Ikmal had asked the ministry to state the number of websites which had been blocked because they threatened public order.

The ministry also said all these websites were blocked upon the request of and with the authority of enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry as well as the Health Ministry.
