At the launch of the Peugeot 208 and 2008 facelifts last month, it was revealed by Nasim that the 208 GTi would be returning to Malaysia. Well, here’s the facelifted hot hatch, now in Malaysia. Launching this quarter perhaps?
The pre-facelift 208 GTi was launched here in late 2013. Nasim senior general manager Yasser Awan said that 200 hp three-door hatch was a successful model for the company and has achieved a cult following among enthusiasts. Value pricing helped too – the fully-stocked GTi was launched at RM140k.
Changes to the 208 GTi facelift include the same integrated front grille and bumper design as the standard 208 (much neater to these eyes), along with new LED tail lights with triple “lion claw” signatures. The GTi-specific headlights (with C-shaped LED indicators) and 17-inch “Carbone” two-tone alloys are unchanged, while the red highlights on the grille is now a simple stripe inset below the number plate.
Inside, the graduated red decorative trim has been replaced by piano black items, with the door handles gaining the same red stripe as on the hardcore 30th Anniversary Edition (now called the 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport).
The Prince 1.6 litre THP turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been retained, but now produces 8 hp and 25 Nm more, for 208 hp and 300 Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission remains the sole gearbox option – good news for those who seek for the stick.
Given the ringgit’s current strength (or rather the lack of) against major currencies, it would be quite an achievement if Nasim managed to price the car around RM140k. There’s not much to spot here other than the lack of a panoramic glass roof that was standard on the local pre-facelift car.
