Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 3 (Herrera 43, 90, Rooney 79) Aston Villa 1 (Benteke 80)
Manchester United sealed a deserved 3-1 win over Aston Villa to move above Manchester City and into third place thanks to a brace from Ander Herrera and a superb Wayne Rooney half-volley.
The home side were extremely dominant in the first-half, with 74% of possession, but had to wait until the 43rd minute for the opener when Herrera sent a half-volley into the far corner after Daley Blind’s cut-back.
Wayne Rooney looked like he had killed the contest with just over ten minutes remaining, controlling a high ball from Angel di Maria with his back towards goal before spinning and volleying into the top left-hand corner with a superb strike.
Moments later Aston Villa had a lifeline, however, as David de Gea allowed a tame Benteke shot to squirm under his body after the ball fell to the Belgian from a corner.
That set up a potentially frantic finish, but Herrera calmed any nerves two minutes into added time, sweeping Juan Mata’s cutback into the net from the edge of the area.
