Kuala Krai flood victims collect rain water for cooking and drinking

Most of the food supply were brought by victims to relief centres as adequate supply had not been forthcoming since several days ago.

KOTA BHARU: Flood victims in Kuala Krai were forced to collect rainwater for cooking rice and drinking as they ran out of clean water on Monday.

Zahari Abdul Kadir, 47, said they also slept in darkness accompanied by torch lights and candles as power supply was cut off two days ago.

Most of the food supply were brought by victims to relief centres as adequate supply had not been forthcoming since several days ago.

"We had rice without any dishes, as only rice had been delivered, " he told reporters at SK Banggol Ghucildi relief centre, at here, on Thursday.

Zahari, who had spent three days at the centre, said the 2,000 evacuees added to their sufferings as they had to ration food.

Meanwhile, Wan Nor Aziah Wan Ghazali, 40, said the flood this time was the worst to have inundated the area.

They did not expect such a severe flood would affect the area because past floods were not big.

"We didn't know that a major flood will occur, so we did not make provisions. It breaks my heart to see babies crying and the elderly sleeping in the cold."

She said they had also lost contact with family members as the electricity was cut off several days ago.
