Euro 2016 qualifying Group A, Laugardalsvollur Stadium – Iceland 2 (Sigurdsson 10 pen, 42) Netherlands 0
Gylfi Sigurdsson struck twice as Iceland claimed a memorable 2-0 victory over World Cup semi-finalists Netherlands to shake up Euro 2016 qualification in Group A in the Nordic cold at Laugardalsvollur Stadium.
Defeat leaves the Dutch six points adrift of the automatic qualification places after just three games, with Iceland joining Czech Republic on the maximum haul of nine points after a deserved win.
Sigurdsson tucked home an early opener from the penalty spot, before rifling a superb volley into the roof of the net on the stroke of half-time.
That should have sparked a salvage mission from the visitors, but they struggled to carve open a resolute Iceland backline that repeatedly dealt with a bombardment from the flanks as the temperature dipped below freezing in Reykjavik.
The hosts had chances to extend their lead as the second period wore on before the referee’s whistle finally ended the Dutch misery.
