Pregnant woman faints in the dock before sentencing

Mardiana was fined RM1,000, in default two months' jail.


KUALA LUMPUR: A proceeding in the Magistrate's Court here today stopped for awhile when the accused, who pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to produce her identification documents, fainted and fell in the dock.

However, Mardiana Othman, 35, who is pregnant, regained consciousness about a minute later and was helped to stand up by a female accused and a policeman.

Following which, Magistrate Nurul' Ain Abdul Rahim continued with the proceeding and fined her RM1,000, in default two months' jail.

Mardiana was charged with failing to produce the documents when requested by a police officer during a check in front of a hotel at Jalan Raja Laut here at 6pm last May 31.

In mitigation, Mardiana, who has three children, said she is jobless and has to support her 70-year-old mother, while her husband does not earn much.
